INTRODUCTION

The records of the University of Missouri Department of Anatomy contain

departmental papers and correspondence with other departments, colleges, and university officials.

DONOR INFORMATION

The records were donated to the University of Missouri by the Department of Anatomy on 14 October 1966 (Accession No. WUNP3685).

FOLDER LIST

f. 1-2 1908-1921. Correspondence relating to the University of Michigan hospital, the possibility of a free general state hospital at the University of Missouri. There are letters dealing with the medical school curriculum, notices from the Board of Curators, appointments regarding student assistants, committees for examinations,

correspondence between the anatomy department and the registrar's office. Various optical and instrument companies are represented, as is the business office. A listing of the active members of the

Missouri Chapter of Sigma Xi for the period 1921-1922 is included. f. 3-8 1922. Correspondence about departmental appropriations, fees, course sequences, publications in professional journals, appointments, price listings for equipment, and information on research fellowships. Much of the correspondence is between the department and various instrument and optical companies. Letters about examinations, travel regulations, recommendations, applications, biographical sketches, supplies, Sigma Xi listing of faculty members who had left the University, grading systems, committees, reprints, information on Columbia Paroffin Ovens, Army ROTC, building and space

allocations, evaluations, University bylaws, the Clinic Bulletin, and enrollment instructions.

f. 9-12 1923. Correspondence relating to enrollment, supplies for various types of experiments, appointments, conferences with colleagues from other institutions, travel data, admission of students into the department. There is information concerning experiments, recommendations, professional publications and article reprints. Letters concern graduate theses, personnel, and The Missouri School Journal. Included is information relating to slides, Turtox News, Sigma Xi committee on schedule, biographies, and a letter relating to the state anatomical board.

f. 13-15 1924-1926. Correspondence relating to Edgar Allen and his slides. M.D. Overholser, Dean Miller, President Stratton D. Brooks. There is information on appointments, policy on degrees, supplies for experiments, University of Missouri bylaws, and budget. Papers relate to other medical schools, students, committee on university studies, scholarships, issue of scholarship among members of the faculty, personal recommendations, publications in professional journals, Sigma Xi, and a periodical listing of the University of Missouri library.

f. 16-23 1927-1928. Correspondence relating to final examinations, graduate theses, academic credits, purchases, stenographic service, article reprints, committee on revision of records, slides, recommendations and admissions, appointments, budget, equipment, professional publications, listing of departmental chairmen; public relations with the parents of students. Included are the bylaws of the University faculty, listing of the out-patient clinic for 1927, application for M.A. degree, fees, University Club, resignations, Dean F.B.

Mumford, names for 1928-1929 scholarships and fellowships, travel data, financial reports. Reports to the Missouri state anatomical board.

f. 24-29 1929. Correspondence relating to Sigma Xi, fees, academic credits, professional publications, committee on university studies,

appointments, The Wistar Institute News, experiments, committee on review of records, supplies for experiments, payroll regulations, recommendations, admissions, examinations, budget, library purchases, equipment, medical library, survey commission, Who's Who In America, listing of departmental chairmen. Papers relate to committees of the university faculty, registrar, office of the

secretary, course schedules, biographical sketch of Dr. Cowdry, group insurance, Boone County Medical Society, degree application, course prerequisites, and the University Club.

f. 30-32 1930. Correspondence relating to professional publications, course listings, Crippled Children's Service, white rats, Stratton D. Brooks, Sigma Xi, alumni recorder, article reprints. Papers relate to the secretary's office, Columbia country club, Board of Curators, examinations, budgets, registrar, degree application, equipment for experiments, and course sequences.

f. 33-38 1931-1932. Correspondence relating to purchases for the department, Committee for Research in Problems of Sex, auditors office,

photographs, fees, professional publications, and papers. Anatomists' convention, travel, graduate theses, examinations, appointments, budget and monetary policy. Material on course descriptions, equipment, graduate prerequisites, registration, enrollment figures, degree applications, excerpts from the A.M.A. by-laws. University of Missouri Medical School Foundation, research in the zoology department, and grants of the committee on scientific research.

f. 39-50 1933-1934. Professional publications, public relations, experiments, grades, The Harvey Society, funds and budgets, registration, recommendations, examinations, and reprints. Letters dealing with H.H. Charlton's death. Other material deals with appointments, Nelson's publications, bills, bio-graphical sketch of Edgar Allen, slides, supplies for experiments, experiments, listing of departmental chairmen, course content, personal letter of Dr. M. Overholser, grants for research, professional organizations, graduate theses, Sigma Xi.

f. 51-64 1935. Faculty appointments, courses and departmental prerequisites, Warren Nelson's leave of absence, supplies for experiments, professional publications, reprints, graduate assistants, committees for graduate examinations, experiments, manuscripts, University of Minnesota Editorial Board, Yale University, study program of R.P. Reese, public relations with University High School. Overholser's discussion of experiments with Oliver Kamm of Parke-Davis and Company. Wistar Institute, Sigma Xi, Edgar Allen, Missouri Academy of Science. Correspondence between Nelson and Overholser. Mailing list of members of a medical-biological seminar, 1934-1935.

f. 74-84 1937. Allen-Overholser and Nelson-Overholser correspondence, faculty applications, professional publications, personal and professional recommendations, Helen Z. Hunt's appointment as biological artist, Committee on Research of A.M.A., supplies for experiments, fellowships. Kamm-Overholser correspondence, experiments on cancer, letters concerning the death of M.D.

Overholser's father, biographical sketch on Overholser, Who's Who Among Physicians and Surgeons.

f. 85-91 1938, Correspondence relating to faculty positions, supplies for experiments, application for admission into graduate study, examinations, and Overholser's system of grading. R. Crouch's appointment as associate professor of anatomy. Reprints,

experiments, hints on mice, University Research Council, salaries, inbred stocks available in quantity, experimental cancer research, research funds, Nelson-Overholser letters, and biographical sketch of A.A. Lewis .

f. 99-106 1940. Correspondence relating to monkey experiments, medical education in the U.S., faculty positions, publications, experiments, Hatch Act, the New York Academy of Sciences and the State Biological Field Station-University of Dubuque. Overholser's

f. 113-127 1942-1943. Letters relating to interscholastic events, professional publications, university research council, permanent science fund, L.J. Wells, war measures, supplies for experiments, cancer, Sigma Xi, space allocation for the Medical School, endocrine cancer conference, hormones, death of Edgar Allen. Overholser correspondence with Crouch and Allen.

Correspondence relating to medical motion pictures, Boone County Medical Society, U.S. Public Health Service, National Institute of Health, financial statements, New York University--Bellvue Medical Center campaigns. Included also are inter-departmental orders for supplies and equipment.

f. 131-132 Undated Material. Correspondence relating to W.C. Curtis, Walter J. Shepard, fellowships, membership of Boone County Medical Society, equipment, H.H. Charlton's resume. There are also letters concerning the special committee on scholarship, College of Agriculture, Sigma Xi, slides, and a biographical sketch of Edgar Allen.

f. 133-136 Undated Material. Biographical sketch of L.J. Wells. Letters relating to M.A. degree requirements in zoology, medicine B.S. candidates, departmental publica-tions, departmental biographical sketches, sketch of H.H. Charlton, and listing of possible sources of departmental supplies.
