getting started
Building your Mold-Masters
hot runner system has never been easier. This portion of the Resource Guide will
familiarize you with a number of the symbols, terms and page maps that clearly illustrate where to find
informa-tion throughout this resource tool.
To better understand what information you will find in each section, we’ve included a brief on each section to
help you locate the information you need.
The Resource Guide is composed of 2 main sections: Knowledge and Catalog
The Knowledge section contains 4 tabs:
introduction
- overview of Master-Series
using this guide
- this portion
design fundamentals - the background science of hot runner design
build your system
- step-by-step how to specify your complete system
The Catalog section contains 6 Product Line tabs:
Femto-Lite
Femto
Pico
Centi
Deci
Hecto
The Catalog section also contains 4 Auxiliary Component tabs:
Inlet Components
Manifold Components
Valve Components
Hot Half Design
catalog - product line section
The Master-Series product line catalog pages are organized by processing capacity from small to large part
applications.
Updates are available online at www.moldmasters.com
The catalog pages for each product line are divided into
3 sections with specific design information: nozzles,
manifolds and auxiliary
nozzles section (for each product line)
This section contains all nozzle style and gate detail
information with cut out dimensions for tip, sprue,
edge and valve gate systems.
manifold section (for each product line)
This section contains all the MasterSPEED manifold
configurations available within each product line.
auxiliary section (for each product line)
Contains Single Nozzle, Accu-In-Line and Water-Cooled
Gate Insert information specific to the product line.
catalog - component section
This portion of the catalog contains component design
details for products that can be used with more than
one product line. At the top right of each page you’ll
find the product line reference associated with each
component. This section contains the following tabs:
inlet components - locating rings, inlet extension
noz-zles, both heated and non-heated backplate design
data
manifold components - manifold locators, pressure
disks, locating cams, heater plates, main manifold step
and 2 in-line main manifold options
valve components - pneumatic and hydraulic actuators.
References are made to appropriate product line(s) for
each valve component
temperature control - TempMaster-Series controller
products with specific data on the 5 different models
and on thermocouples, mold-connector plugs and
electrical boxes
resource guide icons
Icons are used to help you navigate through the
vari-ous sections of the Guide. They are used to identify the
section you are in as well as point you in the direction
of other related components that you may need to
reference. (ie. nozzles, manifolds, accessories.)
resource guide terminology
Mold-Masters
uses various terms to refer to
compo-nents listed in this resource. We recognize that “our”
terms may not be yours and have prepared the
fol-lowing cross-reference to help you identify various
components through-out the resource.
inlet component:
The part of the hot runner system that makes contact
with the machine nozzle. The machine nozzle radius
(spherical radius) must be specified to suit the
ma-chine nozzle to be used. The mama-chine nozzle should
also have an opening to match the inlet component
selected. Longer inlet components can be selected
where valve actuators are to be used, or as required
by the mold design. (Refer to Inlet Component Section
for example.)
alternate terms: Sprue bushing, Backplate, Center
heater, Inlet Extension, Machine Nozzle Pad.
main manifold:
Distributes melt from the inlet component to one or
more sub-manifolds. Not always required on smaller
hot runner systems. (Refer to Manifold Component
Section for example.)
sub-manifold:
Distributes melt from the main manifold, or inlet
com-ponent to the individual nozzles.
(Refer to any Manifold Section for example.)
alternate terms: Manifold, Distributor.
nozzle:
Delivers melt from the manifold to the gate.
(Refer to any Nozzle Section for example.)
alternate terms: Drop, Hot Drop, Probe, Heater, Sprue,
Cast, Heated Bushing.
gate seal:
Connected to the nozzle, usually threaded into the
noz-zle. Provides a seal between the nozzle and the mold
steel. (Refer to any Nozzle Section for examples.)
alternate terms: Transfer seal, T-seal, Tit-seal
torpedo:
Pointed component usually inserted into the front of
the nozzle and held in place by the gate seal. Used in
certain gating techniques to conduct heat into the gate
and to minimize gate vestige. (Refer to any Nozzle
Section for example.)
alternate terms: Tip.
liner/sprue:
Component held in place in the front of the nozzle by the
gate seal. Used in certain valve and sprue gating
tech-niques. (Refer to any Nozzle section for examples.)
valve pin:
Pin which shuts off in the gate on valve gating techniques.
(Refer to Valve Components Section for example.)
alternate terms: Needle, Shut-off pin, Valve Stem
valve actuator:
Unit mounted into the top plate over the manifold to
make the valve pins move. Can be operated by
com-pressed air (pneumatic) or by pressurized oil (hydraulic).
(Refer to Valve Component Section for example.)
alternate terms: Hydraulic Unit, Pneumatic Unit,
Cyl-inder, Piston
locating ring:
Ring used to position the system in the mold plate and
the mold in the machine. (Refer to Inlet Component
Section for example.)
heater plate:
A plate with heater element that conveys heat to the
manifold (used on bolt-in systems). (Refer to Manifold
Components Section for example.)
nozzle well:
Cutout in moldplate to fit nozzle. (See any Nozzle
Sec-tion for examples.)
step:
Additional spacer between manifold and nozzle (used
when needed). (See Manifold Components Section
for example.)
