Throughout the day, visitors stood  before the new exhibit and speculated as to what it represented.  “I think it’s a terrifying monster,” said Misty. “There’s no name on it, but I’m sure it was drawn by a  famous artist.”

“I  would  say  that  it’s  a  picture  of  a  park as  seen  from  an  airplane,”  mused  Sreenivas.  “I  see  many  trees and roads.”

Miss Pittie, the local art critic for the New India Weekly, made her pronouncement. “This is clearly a  masterpiece created by an artist who wishes to be anonymous at this stage of his or her career. The  brilliant  strokes  of  colour  symbolize  a  person  who  is  looking  back  at  an  exciting  lifetime  of  accomplishments!”

At  that  moment,  Mr.  G.V.  Reddy,  the  gallery  curator,  entered  the  room.  “Isn’t  it  great?”  he  asked  with a big smile on his face. “My three year old did that this morning. He says it’s a maze. I think it’s  amazing!”  21.  Visitors stood before the new exhibit and tried  A.  to guess who the painter was.  B.  to guess what the painting was about.  C.  to look for the painter in the gallery.  D.  to find out who had gifted it to the gallery.  22.  Who thought the artist did not want to be identified?  A.  Misty  B.  Sreenivas  C.  Miss Pittie  D.  Mr. G. V. Reddy

Spitting  is  considered  to be rude  behavior in  people. But for  some  animals,  spitting can be a smart  way to get lunch –or a clever way to avoid becoming lunch!  29.  A llama might choose to spit on you because it wishes  A.  to protect itself.  B.  not to become lunch.  C.  to steal food.  D.  to lose its appetite.  30.  Snakes spray venom into the eyes of an animal  A.  to get time to escape.  B.  to kill the animal.  C.  to practise their aim.  D.  to show their annoyance.

Samanta What’s your new manager like?

Noori Not manager, we’re supposed to call him ‘team leader’.

Samanta Oh, why’s that?

Noori

He wants an informal atmosphere, so, we’re to call him Jim, not to address him as Mr. Perkins. Oh, and he’s changed my job title. I’m not a ‘secretary’ anymore; I’m a ‘personal assistant’.

Samanta Have you been promoted?

Noori Oh, no- it’s the same job with a different name. He’s got a thing about positive

words. We mustn’t use the word ‘problem’, but say ‘positive challenge’ instead. Nothing must be called a ‘failure’, it’s just an ‘improvement opportunity’. You know what - he got angry when I mentioned that the company made a loss last year. We’re supposed to say ‘negative growth’ instead.

SECTION-II : READING

READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW.

For some time now, I have been trying to decide who makes the world’s best ice cream. I have narrowed my list down to four manufacturers : Bobbins Naturals, Wall’s, Wunderburst or Marshal.

Let’s start with Bobbins. They make very good ice cream. They have lots and lots of yummy flavours, but that’s really not important - because I always get coffee flavour. They make the best coffee ice cream in the world. I’ve never drunk real hot coffee, but people tell me that Bobbins’ coffee ice cream tastes just like the real thing. Besides, Bobbins uses all natural ingredients to make their ice cream which is a really good idea.

Second, there is Wall’s. Wall’s makes excellent ice cream. Like Bobbins, Wall’s uses natural ingredients. But they only make three different flavours—strawberry, vanilla, and choconut—but they make them really creamy and fruity. Especially the strawberry. Every bite of it reminds me of the strawberries that I used to eat at my gran’s house. The vanilla is wonderful. It is very smooth and has a fresh, creamy flavour. But the choconut is the best. It is made with real cocoa beans from Columbia.

(39)

5

3rd IEO - SET B

I didn’t know where Columbia is, so I looked for it on a map. I discovered that it is in South America! That’s a long way to go to get cocoa, so it must be good. I would say that the only drawback to Wall’s ice cream is that they only make three different flavours.

Third, we have Wunderburst. Wunderburst ice cream is okay. They don’t have many good flavours. Actually, the only Wunderburst flavour I like is Caramel. It is vanilla with little chunks of toffee in it. As you eat the ice cream, you can crunch through the toffee. That’s pretty fun.

Finally, there is Marshal. Marshal ice cream is mediocre. The only good thing about Marshal is that it is relatively inexpensive. You can buy a whole carton of Marshal ice cream for ` 50.00. That’s only my two - week allowance.

31. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?

(A) Strawberry, Vanilla, Choconut, and Toffee (B) The Four Top Ice Cream Manufacturers

(C) The Finest Ice Cream in the World (D) Picking the Best Ice Cream Manufacturer

32. If the author wanted to get some coffee ice cream, where would he or she probably go?

(A) Wunderburst (B) Bobbins

(C) Marshal (D) Wall’s

33. According to the passage, the author likes Bobbins ice cream because it _______.

(A) is all natural (B) is made in Columbia

(C) comes in toffee flavour (D) is mediocre

34. The author writes, “That’s a long way to go to get cocoa, so it must be good.” Using this information, we can understand that the author believes that _______.

(A) Wall’s is spending a lot of money on its ingredients (B) Columbia makes the best cocoa in the world (C) things that are hard to get must be high quality

(D) cocoa from the other parts of the world is not very good

35. The author likes Wunderburst ice cream because it ______.

(A) is relatively inexpensive (B) has toffee in it

(C) is made in Columbia (D) is okay

36. According to the passage, how is Bobbins ice cream different from Wall’s? (1) Bobbins has many different flavours and Wall’s does not.

(2) Bobbins uses all natural ingredients and Wall’s does not. (3) Bobbins is very expensive and Wall’s is not.

(A) 1 only (B) 1 and 2 only

(40)

37. Given the information in the passage, which of the following statements would the author most likely agree with?

(A) Each manufacturer has its strengths and weaknesses. (B) The best manufacturers are the ones with the most flavours. (C) Manufacturers with fewer flavours are not usually popular. (D) Each manufacturer is good for different reasons.

READING

FOR QUESTIONS 20 TO 24, READ THE TEXT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

Japan is an island nation located in the Pacific Ocean. It is known as the land of the rising sun because of the characters that make up its name mean ‘sun-origin’. It is technologically very advanced and is very famous for Shinkansen. In English, they are known as ‘bullet trains’. However, the literal translation means new trunk line. Bullet trains are high speed passenger rail trains. The term ‘bullet’ is due to the pointed nose of the train that is like that of a bullet along with its sleek and aerodynamic appearance.

These trains are operated by Japan Railways. Running at speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour, the Shinkansen is known for punctuality, comfort, safety and efficiency. There are two types of coaches – Ordinary and the Green car. Both have comfortable chairs facing forward with a generous amount of foot space, although the Green car is more comfortable and offers more leg room. The network consists of multiple lines which have been exclusively built for and used only by the Shinkansen trains. However, the Shinkansen has multiple train categories ranging from the fastest that stop only at major stations to the slowest that stop at every station.

The original service began in 1964, con-necting the cities of Tokyo and Osaka. The trains travelled at approximately 125 miles per hour (200 kilometres per hour) making the journey time between the two cities at about 2.5 hours.

Over six billion passengers have travelled on the railway since 1964 with no major accidents.

The success of these trains led to further development of rail in other European and Asian countries. Two of the more notable services are Alta Velocidad Española (AVE) and Train à Grande Vitesse (TGV) from Spain and France respectively. TGV has an extensive network and has carried in excess of 1.3 billion passengers since the service began in 1981. The AVE started 11 years later and is planning an expansion which would create a larger network than the French line.

Riding in a bullet train feels like gliding through air. Even though they travel at such high speeds, the ride is smooth and peaceful. It is a great system and has benefited people by reducing the time of travel. However, there is a downside to this. Travelling by bullet trains is quite expensive. A ticket to travel to another city could cost you almost as much as an air ticket. However, train stations are located in the middle of a city, compared to airports that are usually on the outskirts, making it more convenient and providing value for money.

Example

Why is Shinkansen known as ‘bullet train’ in English?

A. Because the train is a bullet. B. Because the front of the train

has a pointed nose.

C. Because of its aerodynamic appearance.

He seemed to know the harbour, So leisurely he swam;

His fin,

Like a piece of sheet-iron, Three-cornered, And with knife-edge,

Stirred not a bubble As it moved

With its base-line on the water. His body was tubular

And tapered

And smoke-blue, And as he passed the wharf

He turned,

And snapped at a flat-fish That was dead and floating. And I saw the flash of a white throat,

And a double row of white teeth, And eyes of metallic grey,

Hard and narrow and slit. Then out of the harbour, With that three-cornered fin Shearing without a bubble the water

Lithely, Leisurely, He swam— That strange fish, Tubular, tapered, smoke-blue,

Part vulture, part wolf,

Part neither—for his blood was cold. By E J PRATT
