Making and modifying Galleries in
SMART Notebook
Using the SMART Board to meet your needs!
Inserting your own clipart into the Collections GalleriesUsing your own clipart for the collections could be more powerful than the prepackaged clipart with the SMART Board Collections. First you will need to find usable clipart or pictures for your customized collections. Once you find clipart, here’s what you need to do:
• Save you clipart to My Documents (or wherever you won’t forget where you put it!)
• Open the Galley Collection from within SMART Notebook where you want your additional clipart to be. (For example, if you are saving pictures of 3 dimensional solids, open the math collection.)
• From the Gallery side menu, select “Insert”, “Clip Art”, then navigate to where your clipart has been saved.
• Select and open the clipart. It is placed in with the pictures in the Gallery.
• Before closing the collection you will have a chance to save the clip art to your new collection.
Do you want to make your own new collection rather than adding on to a pre-existing collection? Then follow these steps:
• Save you clipart to My Documents (or wherever you won’t forget where you put it!)
• Open the Galley Collection from within SMART Notebook.
• From the Gallery side menu, select “File”, “New” to make your new gallery collection.
• From the Gallery side menu, now select “Insert”, “Clip art”, then navigate to where your clipart has been saved.
• Select and open the clipart. It is placed in with the pictures in the Gallery.
• Before closing the collection you will have a chance to save the clip art and name your new collection. Take note of where you are saving to! Are you saving into a pre-existing subject folder? Are you making your own folder to store all your custom collections? Are you just going to save into the file with all the subjects folders?
A second way is to . . . .
• Find your clip art either on the Internet or elsewhere.
• Copy the picture by right clicking the clipart and selecting “copy”. • Then go back into Notebook and open the Gallery your new piece of
clipart will be a part of.
• In the Gallery menu, go to “Edit” then “Paste”.
A third way is to . . .
• ... copy and paste the clipart directly into SMART Notebook.
• Then drop and drag it onto the Gallery by putting your finger on the clipart and dragging it into the open Gallery
window. The blue brackets will indicate where your new piece of clipart will be dropped.
Once all additions have been made to the Gallery, be sure to save your new Gallery so you can use your chosen clip art as a part of the Gallery time and time again!
Tip!
Images searches – a classroom idea
Why not try searching for images off the Internet to enhance vocabulary, background knowledge, historical images,
virtual field trips or current events.
One place start searching is with a Google Image Search. Go to http://www.google.com
then click on Images. From here you will be able to search for images.
It is not recommended allowing your students to search!
There are no filters for inappropriate images!
Clicking on Advanced Image Search, allows you to set filters.
This is a tip for your searches – not your students! While not 100% safe, there will be some sort of a filter in place.
Tip!
You’ve found a picture, now what?
Now you have two options:
1. Right click the picture you have found. Select “Copy” then paste the picture directly into Notebook, PowerPoint or other program. 2. Right click the picture you have found. Select “Save picture as”
and save the picture for future use. When this option is selected, you will then navigate to where you want your picture saved. (The default is to your My Pictures folder in your My Documents folder, a great place for all your pictures!) You can always save to My Documents, the Desktop or your H drive so you remember where the pictures were saved to.
Making your own Collection Gallery
Here is another way to get the most out of your SMART Board! Collections could be used more for a unit of study where you might be reviewing several days or using the same manipulatives throughout your unit.
How to make your own Galley
There are really two steps to designing your own gallery. First is to make the template and second is to add it to the Gallery.
Make your template (just as we did yesterday) 1. Open SMART Notebook and design your template.
Unlike templates, collections can have numerous templates and pic ures. t 2. Group your template if you need to and put your template in the
background.
3. Next save it as a template. Go to “File”, “Save Page as Template”.
4. Next you need to navigate to the templates folder. In the drop down menu, select - My Computer
- Local Disk (C:) - Program files folder
- SMART Board software folder - Content folder
- Templates folder
5. Once you are in the templates folder, you have two choices.
1. The easiest will be to name your template and save it in the templates folder.
2. Or you can start to organize your templates by making your own new folder as part of the other template folders for your customized templates. To do this, click on the icon to form a new folder. When you make a new folder, the title of the folder will be highlighted in blue. Now is a good time to name the folder. Then open your new folder and save your template into it.
This is all a review from yesterday. If you are comfortable with making and saving a template, skip this box. If you need to, refer back to yesterday’s information.
Second step – add it to the Gallery
Now you need to add your template to a Gallery.
1. Open the Gallery from within SMART Notebook. (Go to “View” “Gallery”)
2. Open any one of the Galleries – it doesn’t matter which one. 3. From the Gallery menu, go to “File” “New” to open a new
Gallery.
4. A blank Gallery will open. Now, still in the Gallery menu, go to “Insert” “Page
Template From File”.
5. Next your template file will open. You will need to navigate to where your template is stored. (Did you make your own
template folder? Or did you save it to the template file that is open?)
6. Find and open your template.
When your template opens, it should open into the Gallery window. Keep adding your needed templates to this Gallery. When you close your Gallery, be sure to save it for future use!
