Hymns After the Small Entrance.

Resurrectional Apolytikion. Mode 1.

L

et us worship the Word who is unoriginate * with the Father and the Spirit, and from a Virgin was born * for our salvation, O believers, and let us sing His praise. * For in His goodness He was pleased * to ascend the Cross in the flesh, and to undergo death, * and to raise up those who had died, * by His glorious Resurrection.

For St. Nektarios.

A

s we joyfully commemorate the welcome arrival of your sacred Relics, holy Hierarch Nektarios, we call upon the grace of God in you, which sanctifies our bodies and our souls. You alleviate our suffering and you cure the illnesses afflicting us. Glory to Christ, who glorified you! Glory to Him for your miracles! Glory to Him for all the cures that He works through you.

Kontakion. Mode 3.

I

revolted senselessly * out of Your fatherly glory; * I have squandered sinfully * all of the riches You gave me.* Hence to You, using the Prodigal's words, I

cry out,* I have sinned before You, merciful loving Father.* O receive me in repentance, * I pray, and treat me * as one of Your hired hands.

Trisagion Hymn 8 The Readings

Epistle: 1 Cor. 6:12-20. 130 Brethren, "all things are lawful for me," but not all

things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be enslaved by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food"—and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is not meant for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who joins himself to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, "The two shall become one flesh." But he who is united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun immorality. Every other sin which a man commits is outside the body; but the immoral man sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body and in your spirit which belong to God.

Gospel: Lk. 15:11-32. 130 The Lord said this parable: "There was a man who

had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living. And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want. So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he

would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants.' And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his servants, 'Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet; and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry. Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant. And he said to him, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.' But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, but he

answered his father, 'Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!' And he said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'

Hymn to the Theotokos 23

I

t is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos.

The Lord's Prayer Communion Prayers 29

(Read aloud by the Congregation)

I believe and confess, Lord, that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, Who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. I also believe that this is truly Your pure Body and that this is truly Your precious Blood. Therefore, I pray to You, have mercy upon me, and forgive my transgressions, voluntary and involuntary, in word and deed, known and unknown and make me worthy, without

condemnation, to partake of Your pure Mysteries for the forgiveness of sins and for life eternal. Amen. How shall I, who am unworthy, enter into the splendor of Your saints? If I dare to enter into the bridal chamber, my clothing will accuse me, since it is not a wedding garment; and being bound up, I shall be cast out by the angels. In Your love, Lord, cleanse my soul and save me. Loving Master, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, let not these Holy Gifts be to my condemnation because of my unworthiness, but for the cleansing and sanctification of soul and body and the pledge of future life and Kingdom. It is good for me to cling to God and to place in Him the hope of my salvation. Receive me today, Son of God, as a partaker of Your mystical supper. I will not reveal your mystery to Your adversaries. Nor will I give You a kiss as did Judas. But as the thief, I confess to You: Lord, Remember me in Your Kingdom. Communion Hymn

P

Great Compline

Every Monday, March 15 through April 19 at 7:00 p.m.

(Monday, March 15 Compline service & Cannon of St. Andrew)

The service of the Compline is done in monasteries on a daily basis before one retires for sleep. It is used in our churches during the season of Lent, on either Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. This 45 minute-long service consists mostly of Psalm readings and prayers and ends with the very powerful hymn, “Lord of the Powers”. The service of the Great Compline allows us an opportunity to pray and reflect, to cry out for God’s mercy and forgiveness and to acknowledge that all our hopes and salvation must be placed in God’s hands.

Liturgy of the

Presanctified Gifts

Every Wednesday, March 17 through April 21 at 6:00 p.m.

Since the Divine Liturgy is a festive and joyous celebration, it is not celebrated on week-days during Lent. This celebration is reserved only for Sundays, the Saturdays of the Souls and the Feast of the Annunciation. The Divine Liturgy is not conducted on other days as a way of maintaining the solemnity of the season. However, because Lent is a period of fasting, it should also be a period of more frequent reception of Holy Communion. Therefore, at a Presanctified Liturgy their is no consecration of the Gifts during the service. The Gifts have been consecrated usually on the preceding Sunday at a regular Divine Liturgy. The service lasts just over an hour and contains the service of the Ninth Hour and the Vespers, with Holy Communion added at the end. Those who choose to keep the entire fast are encouraged to attend this service and to receive Holy Communion as a way of sustaining the fast by receiving the Body and Blood of Christ even more frequently during this period of spiritual discipline.

Salutations to the

Theotokos

Every Friday, March 19 through April 9 at 7:00 p.m.

The Akathist Hymn consists of hymns and prayers and is divided into four sections which correspond to the themes of the Annunciation, Nativity, Christ, and the Theotokos herself. One section is sung on the first four Fridays of Lent. The hymn in its entirely is sung on the fifth Friday of Lent (see below). The service lasts just over an hour .

Akathist Hymn

Friday, April 16 at 7:00 p.m.

The Akathist Hymn is a beautiful poem of praise and devotion to the Mother of our Lord. It was sung in the year 626 in the Church of the Theotokos in Constantinople on the occasion of the deliverance and freedom of Constantinople from the barbarians.

The Akathist is composed of twenty-four stanzas, each stanza beginning with a letter of the Greek alphabet from Alpha to Omega. The Hymn is divided into four parts, one part sung on each of the Fridays of Lent (Salutations) and on the fifth Friday, the Hymn is sung in its entirety. It is called "Akathist" because the people, out of love, devotion and gratefulness to the Theotokos for Her miracle and deliverance, stood during the entire Hymn.
