1. Project title (5 to 8 words): OS/X based Terminal Services for Mobile Application Development

2. Brief description of project:

Business services and applications are increasingly being developed and deployed for mobile

platforms including tablets and smart phones. It is necessary for business students in the information systems field to have skills in analyzing, designing, developing, testing, deploying and managing mobile application projects. Devices provided by Apple such as the iPad and iPhone dominate the market share and current mindset of businesses. Developing applications for the iPhone and the iPad require a MacIntosh or OS/X based device. The business school is currently all Windows based, with

no availability of an Apple based lab or software and hardware that provide support for the development of applications for the iPad or iPhone.

This project proposes the acquisition of an OS/X based server hardware and a Remote Desktop Terminal Services software from Aqua Connect. This approach will allow existing Windows computers and PCs to connect to the OS/X server and provide students the capability to run MacIntosh OS/X software on the server.

The availability of this resource will also allow other professors to use software meant for the MacIntosh in their classroom exercises. This will enable Farmer school and Miami University to keep pace with the current technological developments and help provide a more marketable and better educated business student.

3. Impact on students served and/or evidence of student need - include the number or percentage of students or courses served:

This project will impact the following student base:

a. Students in the MIS department (majors and minors) – about 100 students a year will be able to develop, test, deploy, manage and use mobile applications. This project is primarily geared towards teaching these students in MIS courses such as MIS 403 and MIS 406. Approximately 40 students take each of these classes per year. This can also be used to teach data communication concepts in MIS 301. Approximately 75 students take the MIS 301 classes.

b. Ever since, the FSB introduced a remote desktop terminal server for Windows, students have used it in increasing amounts. The school in the last two years has increased the number of servers to two. We expect a similar increase in the usage of the OS/X remote terminal services from the larger FSB student body.

4. Justification for funding this project:

Briefly describe additional funds available for this project, if any:

None available.

The proposed approach of a server with terminal desktop software provides a 50 to 60% cost savings over the alternative of purchasing 40 Mac based systems for use in the business school. It will also leverage our current infrastructure of Windows based computers available at business school labs.

5. What happens to the project in year 2 and beyond? Will there be any ongoing costs such as software or hardware maintenance, supplies, staffing, etc? How these will be funded?

This has the support of the regular FSB IT staff. We expect that they will be able to maintain the software.

6. How will you assess the project?

Examples: Identify one or more expected project outcomes that indicate project progress and completion. How will you assess the value to students? Measures of enhanced student learning or usage are highly desired. These items should be chosen to facilitate independent evaluation of project completion and value to students.

Outcomes:

• Usage of OS/X Server software and development software such as Xcode in the MIS courses. • Student Assignments and Projects that target the mobile platform.

Assessment will be made by the following methods:

a. Student Assignments and development of mobile applications by MIS students. Learning outcomes will be determined by the student assignments. Use of the hardware and software in classroom and for the assignments will be measured.

b. Students will log into the terminal server to use the services. Usage log of the software by students will be maintained and we will report on the availability and usage of the software.

7. Attach any other supporting information regarding this request.

Examples: Letters of support from the Department chair(s) if curriculum is being changed or from Dick Pettitt for the Space Utilization Group, if your proposal includes requesting changes in rooms or other spaces.
