A s soon as th e craze f o r cards became g e n e ra l th e re w e re those w h o w o rk e d o u t a fe w o f th e s im p le r w a y s w h e re b y cards co u ld be s w itc h e d to th e b e n e fit o f e ith e r one o r m ore in d iv id u a ls in th o se gam es w h e re w a g e rs and s ta k e s w e re b e in g s o u g h t a fte r. N a tu ra lly , th e n u m b e r o f these e a rly cheats was s m a ll and u n t il t h e ir n e fa rio u s scheme w a s suspected th e y had g a in e d c o n s id ­ e ra b le rich es, a c c o rd in g to these h is ­ to ria n s . H o w e ve r, i t w a s n o t lo n g b e ­ fo re th e ir schemes w e re u n co vere d and became, to a c e rta in e x te n t, th e k n o w ­ le d g e o f so m a n y t h a t i t w a s im p ra c ­ tic a l to use them a t g a m in g ta b le s. T o b e a t th is s itu a tio n th e cheats m e re ly c o n c e n tra te d on fin d in g n ew m eth o d s a t p a lm in g cards, s w itc h in g cards, s ta c k in g th e decks, etc., etc., u s u a lly m a n a g in g to keep ju s t a l i t t l e b it ahead o f t h e ir p u rs u e rs . W h ile th e n a tu re o f c a rd t r ic k s is f a ir l y w e ll u n d e rsto o d th e m eth o d o f d o in g th e m is s t i l l m ore o r less a g e n e ra l m y s te ry . T h is is w h y so m a n y re s p e c ta b le p e r ­ sons a re a n n u a lly lu re d in to games b y p ro fe s s io n a l g a m b le rs w h o u n d e rs ta n d c a rd t r ic k s and a g a in s t w h o m th e u n ­ s u s p e c tin g v ic tim has no chance o f c o m p e tin g .
