THE HAPPY MIRROR

A Japanese Folktale

Long, long time ago in Japan, there lived a respected couple with one pretty daughter. When she was just thirty days old, the couple took her to the temple with a long Kimono as all Japanese babies wore. She received a set of dolls from her parents on her first doll festival. Her dolls had long black hair, smooth and silky and were clad in Kimonos of satin and silk. On her third birthday, she received her first sash of scarlet and gold which her lovely mother tied around her small waist. She grew up fast. When she was seven, she could sing, dance and help her parents in many ways.

One day, the emperor sent the father to Tokyo through a messenger. Tokyo was quite far and the roads were quite rough. There were no railways or even jinrikishas to take him there. He had no horse and he had to walk throughout the way.

The mother was happy that he was sent by the emperor for this was a great honor indeed. The little girl was also happy because she knew that her father would come back with interesting stories to tell. She expected some presents, too.

(6)

The father then left. The days seemed very long for the mother and the little girl. They prayed many times each day for his safe journey.

The days slipped by and one morning, the little girl saw someone coming. They went together to the garden gate and waited. As he came nearer, they knew it was him. So they both ran to meet him. They were thankful for his return.

As they were in the house, they all sat down on the white mats on the floor to see what presents the father brought.

The father gave his present to his little girl. After bowing her head, she opened and played with her new doll.

Then the husband took out a square wooden box. The box was tied with a gay colored ribbon. The wife opened the box. She saw one side with beautifully carved pine trees and storks on it and the other side was smooth and shining. Then she exclaimed, “Oh, I see someone looking at me and she is very lovely.” Her husband just laughed, then her mother’s eyes grew big with wonder and said, “ Why is the lady’s dress like mine and she seems to be talking to me?”

“My dear,” her husband said, “That is your face that you see. I have given you a mirror. All the ladies in Tokyo have them. If you bring a smiling face to the mirror, you will see a smiling face. If you are cross when you look at it, then you see the same cross face. The wife thanked her husband. She promised to bring a happy face to the mirror everytime she looked at it.

Years went by and her little girl grew up to a lovely lady like her mother. One day the mother called her daughter and said “My dear I’m giving you this present. I want you to look at it once a year.” The daughter took it and did as she was told.

One time she told her mother that she saw her when she looked at the mirror. Her mother said, “ Yes dear, that is the way I looked when I was young. Be sure to smile when you look at me and I will smile back at you.”

From that day on, she kept the box and once a year she opened it and looked at the mirror remembering to smile and the smile always came back to her.
