Ready? Well, sure you are!
This time, prove that you are already prepared for harder tasks. Recall your past lesson by doing the activity that follows.
Below is a picture about school sites. Do you want to find out the story behind it?
But it’s not that simple, you should rewrite first the passage in your
notebook by supplying the correct punctuation marks. By then, you will be able to understand the passage well as you read it silently.

Study the sentences. Analyze them.

They follow rules in capitalization and punctuations.
c. Remember the following guidelines.
→ Put quotation marks (““) before and after a quotation. → Capitalize the first word of the quotation
→ When some words follow a quotation, use a comma, a question mark, or an exclamation point to separate the quotation from the rest of the sentence. The comma takes the place of a period.
→ Always put the end mark for the quotation before the last quotation mark
→ When you write a dialogue for a story, indent and begin new paragraphs for each new speaker.

For your easy level, write each sentence in your notebook. Add quotation marks when they are needed. The first one is done for you.

Activity 1 Use Indirect Discourse
Study the sentences below.
a. Dr. Santos instructed the nurse to prepare the medicines. b. “Nurse, prepare the medicines” Dr. Santos’ instructed.
*Compare the two sentences. Which one is stated in direct quotation? ________________
*What do we call the first sentence?
Indirect Discourse is used in relaying information and messages accurately as in requests and commands. In reporting command: a.) the verb told is used instead of said; b.) the quotations marks are dropped; c.) told is followed by the person spoken to; d.) necessary changes are made in the pronouns.
In reporting request: a.) the verbs asked or requested are used instead of said; and b.) please is dropped.
Ex. Father said, “Dan, wash the car.”
Indirect = Father asked Dan to wash the car.

Now this module will help you how to write reported sentences from statements, questions and requests and commands.

Ideas for Better Understanding
To change statements into reported sentences
1. Quotation marks and commas are omitted. 2. Verb is changed into past form.
3. The word “that” is added to connect the quotation tag to the exact words of the speaker.
4. If the speaker addresses his statements to somebody, the word “said” becomes “told”.
B. Read the question written on the signboard. Find the correct reported sentence by putting arrows along the right path towards the correct answer.

1. Quotation marks and question marks are dropped or removed.
2. The quotation tag whether placed at the beginning or at the end of the question will be placed at the beginning of the reported sentence followed by the word “if” or “wanted to know”.
3. Verb will be changed into past form. If it is a do-question, “Do, Does, Did” are removed.
4. Pronouns are changed into third person.
Note: Be aware as to what noun in the sentence the pronoun is referring to.
5. Note that there are some changes in the order of the word.

In Changing Request/Command to Reported Sentence
1. Quotation marks and commas are removed.
2. The word “said” becomes told and followed by the name of the person spoken to.
3. The speaker’s name is placed at the beginning of the sentence.
Activity A
Play a Game
1. Throw a coin; if the tail comes out, you have to do number 1 in the exercises that follows.
2. If you have answered it correctly, fill a petal with a happy face and a sad face for a wrong answer.
3. Toss the coin again, if the head comes out the next number is a BONUS just draw a happy face.
4. Do the same for the rest of the numbers until you’re done.
