If I send information from my workstation over the Internet to another machine, how does it actually get there?

Let’s say I want to send an email from my workstation here to a friend at Fordham.

We can track a packets path through the network with the tracert command.

How do the routers know how to move traffic through the network?

Machines keep routing tables that determine the path of the IP packet based on its destination.

Use the netstat –r command to check your routing tables.

UDP, TCP, and the vestiges of sockets

A really neat way to learn about TCP and UDP is to explore your machine. Search for a file called services. This file should look something like this:
