Identifying and monetising new opportunities is fundamental to ensure long-term success for operators. Key business enablers, including capable and cost-effective technologies, must be deployed in order to develop a sustainable future – but it carries huge risk unless the business and technology environments are fully understood.

This interactive and comprehensive university accredited programme focuses specifically on LTE as the key business enabler for telecoms operators over the next few years. It enables participants to carry out a critical business appraisal for broadband technologies and specifically LTE within their own organisational context, and develops competencies in the following areas:

Building the Business Case

Assessing Technology Options

Evaluating Costs & Business Models

Managing Successful Implementation

Maximising Return on Investment

LTE has the potential to enable new and exciting services, radically changing business models and operations (not least by reducing the cost per megabyte of data). We explore the business case, implementation options, key opportunities, complementary and alternative technologies, planning and executing LTE initiatives, and the financial aspects. We spend time discussing the changing customer proposition and user experience, new business models, and partnerships.

Industry data and examples of best practice from the Informa Telecoms and Media Research Team is used throughout to back up the ideas and to put concrete evidence into the discussions. New concepts and ideas developed throughout the programme are immediately applied to a practical business simulation where they are tested, consolidated and assessed thoroughly.

Outcomes and competency

development

At the end of the course, the delegate will be able to:

• CRITICALLYand confidently analyse technologies as a business proposition within their own business context and in a range of different scenarios

• CONTRIBUTEmore effectively to the development of business strategy and planning for mobile broadband technologies

• EXPLAINthe changing dynamics and drivers for change of the mobile-and converged-telecoms market – including the key customer mobile-and industry trends that are driving the requirement for high-speed data

• ENSUREthat future broadband initiatives are backed up with the required rigorous analysis and scrutiny, and reduce the risk associated with broadband business planning

• DESCRIBEthe technical concepts underpinning broadband and compare different broadband implementation options

• FULLY APPRECIATEthe role of complementary and alternative technologies

Business Simulation:

Bringing it all together

Throughout the week, participants, grouped into learning teams, are set the challenge of developing a commercially viable business proposition for LTE, as well as a fully specified implementation plan.

The delegates are briefed as to the scope, format and expectations in order to ensure each team is fully aware of the requirements, and that each participant can ensure they maximise the learning opportunity throughout the modules. The scenario is totally fictitious, but the data presented is designed to be as real as possible and is based on the work of Informa telecoms analysts.

Each learning team is given a whole range of data and tools to use for their bid. They work within the team context to synthesize a fully structured proposal. It is a great opportunity for delegates to apply the learning from the other course modules into a practical situation and explore how these subjects relate to each other. The team context also provides an environment where the linkages between the various corporate functions can be tested and experienced first-hand.

On the final day of the program, each team is asked to present their fully costed proposal to the other teams. Their plan includes a full analysis and proposal in the following eight areas:

• Overall corporate strategy • The business case • The project plan

• Leadership and management • Technology choices • Rollout and launch plans • Financial aspects and ROI

• Corporate social responsibility aspects The final presentations are assessed on a pro-forma marking sheet in each of these seven key areas. Candid feedback is provided to each team at the end of the week and a winning team is awarded the telecoms licence.

This provides a theme for the week’s programme as well as additional motivation for delegates to engage fully in the learning experience. Delegates benefit from direct and candid feedback from the ‘board’ as well as from their colleagues. It provides a very tangible focus for the week’s activities and a fitting climax to their hard work.
