Motivational Statement On Children's Film For

Moral Development

Ferril Irham Muzaki

Abstract: This study aims (1) to describe motivational statements contained in children's films, (2) to make sense of motivational statements that contain motivational ideas; and (3) to make sense of the behavior of characters in children's films that contain reinforcement of character education. The content analysis is used in this study. Research data on this study are the form of phrases, clauses, and sentences containing motivational ideas. Data sources of this research are children's films that screened on the big screen and the internet. The results of this study show that m otivational statements in children's films contain 8 (eight) values, those are (1) recognizing accomplishments of others, (2) having a brilliant thought, (3) having commitment, (4) being communicative, (5) being compromising ideas, (6) being concerned about life based on the situation, (7) having a hard working spirit, (8) having a sense of responsibility. Based on these results, it can conclude that the motivation statement contained in children's films is part of strengthening character education and has a role in character development.

INTRODUCTION

Motivation is the driving force an individual to do something to achieve specific goals. Baarslag (2018: 6) states that the motivation could use direct speech and using indirect speech. Motivational statements are statements that encourage, praise, model, input, and analysis of the occurrence of an event. Hamdan & Jallauddin (2019:106) state that the motivational statement can be delivered in the form of stories, parables, and various other forms. A motivational statement can be packaged in the form of a film, poetry, plays, and various other forms that serve to convey a message to an individual. Motivational statement in the movie-themed children have some kind of character education (De Vet & Wesselman, 2012: 235). The first type is a motivational statement stimulus to move on. Statement motivational stimulus is a motivational statement which provides guidance on the path to success. The second type of motivational statements are statements that are motivational triggers. Motivational statements that become a trigger are a statement trigger to move towards things that written either explicitly or implicitly in the words of motivation (Sumardjoko & Musyiam, 2018:203). The third statements are anchoring, the statement provides an opportunity to move to commemorate his success. The fourth type is a motivational statement 'affect bridge feeling' (Yilmaz, Altinkurt, & Ozciftci, 2016). In a statement, this bridge Affect-based motivational, emotional, and normative sentence more widely used. The fifth type of motivational statement is statements that are a motivational response. Motivation manifold is more like the reflection on a wide variety of events that occur in life squad.Children's films are films that contain motivational values and nuances of character education (Baarslag, 2018:6). Motivational statement in children's film contains a message corresponding to the intended target in the children's film. Children's film that has the values of motivation in the story that is packaged in the form of animation, live-action and or a combination of animation and live-action A motivational statement is an integral part of strengthening character education (Yılmaz & Ersoy, 2016). A motivational statement is the acts as part of the strengthening of character education reflected in the

actions, speech, speech and various measures that accompany it. Children's film that contains the display character education provides a wide range of sentences, scenes, and content data containing values of character education. (Motivation is packed in the form of illustrated children's film events, statements, and symbolizing attributes worn by the actor (Nugrahani, 2017:474). Strengthening character education for children character in the film that has motivational statement integrated tangible in the element of intrinsic and extrinsic elements of a film. Based on the above explanation, the object of research in children's film that has not done in-depth exploration for motivational statement in the children's film (Wangid, Mustadi & Putri, 2018:163). For this reason, the focus of this study is the motivational statement in the children's film as a medium to strengthen character education. This research analyzes the values of character education in children's film based on a statement containing the motivational value.

METHOD

This study is used content analysis. This study used content analysis since this study is purposed to understand the content of utterances spoken by the actors. The utterances as the spoken text could be classified into small categories based on meaning of the words, phrase, or clause. According to Krippendorff (1984), the procedure in content analysis has six steps. Those steps are unitizing, sampling, recording/coding, reducing, inferring, and narrating.

The research data are phrases, clauses, and sentences of spoken text. The phrase data is a compound word that contains a short statement in the children's film. The clause data is a clause containing a motivational message. The sentence data is complete sentence that contain motivational statement. Sources of data in this study are children’s movie that distributed on 2008—2019, those are Spider Man Into Spider Verse (SPR), Iron Man 1-3 (IRM), Man of Steel (MOS), Shazam (SHZ), The Incredible Hulk (HLK), Guardian of the Galaxy (GOG_, Batman The Dark Knight (BTM), Transformers 5: The Last Knight (TRM); and Ant Man (ANT). Those films are movies that children had good reviews from film critics. The children films are collected from YouTube, Netflix and various sources of the children's film. The instruments are phrases, clauses, and sentences corpus checklist designed objectively and systematically for identifying characteristics on communicational message based on communications factors. ————————————————

Those communication factors are speakers, code, media, purposes, and the situation in the conversation. The data collection do in three steps. Those steps are (1) to browse in film criticism website, (2) to download a screenplay that became the object of research, and (3) to observe of the scene cuts in social media websites that is being uploaded by film critics. Data have been collected from children's films are analyzed. This data analysis is using three steps. Those steps are (1) a large grouping of the messages that are in the children's film, (2) codifying motivational statements in the children's film, and (3) the synthesis of meaning implicates motivational statements that have been classified and codified. These three steps are undertaken to obtain a motivational message conveyed in the children's film.

RESULTS

3.1. RESULTS

The results of the data analysis of this study indicate that there are 8 (eight) large groups of motivational statements that commonly appear in children's films 2008—2019.The clusters are (1) recognizing accomplishments of others, (2) having a brilliant thought, (3) having commitment, (4) being communicative, (5) being compromising ideas, (6) being concerned about life based on the situation, (7) having a hard working spirit, (8) having a sense of responsibility. Those results are explained bellow.

3.1.1. RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OTHERS

The motivational statement could be in the form of recognizing the accomplishments of others. It means that the introspective mindset has to be acquired to reach success. The introspective mindset contains meaning that (a) humans must compete to master technology, (b) humans must have a strong motivation to innovate, (c) humans must not plagiarize technology and (d) humans despite competing honestly and fair with the others. The other perspectives of introspective mindset are (a) do not waste time, (b) human beings, even though they are trying to manage their time correctly, (c) humans despite trying to prepare for the future from now on and (d) humans despite trying to achieve a better future. The introspective mindset also contains (a) do your best right now, (b) do the planning for the activities to be carried out in the future, (c) do your best in every job and (d) someone even though they try to rise from failure. Thus, the illustration of the introspective mindset could be seen in the statements below. (1) “I spent thirty years protecting that technology from

a Stark, I sure as hell don't intend to give it

to another! This isn't some cute tech like the Iron Man suit, it could change the face of reality!” (AKD-ANT)

The statement ―… isn't some cute tech like the Iron Man suit, it could change the face of reality‖ showing the speaker in explaining that he found technology that is superior to technology owned by Howard Stark, father of Tony Stark's Iron Man figure. The technology that Tony Stark discover could change the reality of space and time.

(2) “Targeting me won't get their money back. I knew the mob would not go down without a fight, but this is different. They've crossed the line” (AKD-BTM)

The Statement ―I knew the mob wouldn't go down without a fight, but this is different‖ explained with the phrase ―…won't get their money back‖ which implies that time will not be played back — the main focus which, although is done preparing ourselves for the future.

(3) “Because sometimes truth isn't good enough. Sometimes

people deserve more. Sometimes people are welcomed to have their faith rewarded” (AKD-BTM)

The statement above to be the main focus which is done by humans, trying to behave honestly and accept the truth. For this reason, a human must learn to be honest from an early age. In sitting this case, humans despite are trying in the right position in accordance with the flow.

3.1.2. HAVING BRILLIANT THOUGHTS

The motivational statement could be in the form of having brilliant thoughts. It means that thoughtful mindset should be acquired in daily life. The thoughtful mindset contains meaning that a person learns to (a) innovate for the process of personal development, (b) mastering technology to achieve specific goals, (c) be able to utilize technology for his advancement, and (d) have the skills to master information and communication technology in everyday life. The other meaning for having brilliant thought is (a) knowing the elements controlled in each element, (b) learning the solutions to a problem, (c) taking a backup plan to deal with changing situations and (d) having enough knowledge to solve a problem. The thoughtful mindset also contains (a) the ability to correlate ideas and ideas even if possessed by an individual to succeed, (b) the skills for success are related to the skills for elaborating the knowledge possessed, (c) the skills for success are possessed by analyzing the situation and ( d) the ability to hold information updates in real-time. Thus, the motivational statement in having brilliant thoughts are could be seen below.

(4) “Beginning automated assembly. Estimated completion

time is five hours” (ATM-IRM)

The statement of motivations above have the meaning that to achieve something even though it must start from the beginning. In achieving one's goals, they have creative ideas for innovation. The innovation referred in the sentence above, relates to the ability of mechanization.

(5) “I have run simulations on every known element, and

none can serve as a viable replacement for the palladium core. You are running out of both time and options” (ATM-IRM)

The statement above focus on motivate to act carefully to do an activities. In any case, cautions are an inseparable part of an activity. For this reason, based on the above sentence, the elements of prudence consist of several things.

finally arrived and the cellar doors are being cleared as we speak” (ATM-IRM)

information while making coordination with other individuals. In the motivational sentence, there are four things that are mastered.

3.1.3. HAVING COMMITMENT

The motivational statement could be in the form of having a commitment. Thus, having commitment mean acquired considerate mindset. The considerate mindset (a) able to interpret the role of parents in educating children, (b) able to interpret to sacrifice of parents to children, (c) able to understand that parents will provide everything to children and (d) able to appreciate that maintaining inheritance parents are the child's job. The other considerate mindset related to knowledge that can be obtained from are (a) to establish a person's relationship even though building a friendship network, (b) in building relationships, someone even though creating a social investment, (c) in establishing a relationship, someone even, however, trying to share with colleagues and (d) to reinforce relationships, even if someone tries to help others. The considerate mindset also contains some message for establish relationships that need to have four main points. These four things are (a) the ability to establish communication, (b) the ability to make promises, (c) to create to agreements and rules and (d) have the ability to keep agreements. The considerate mindset also consider the capacities to do positive things about the setting are described as (a) not to give up in guarding the environment, (b) continually protecting themselves from destructive behavior in the environment, (c) exercising self-control to prevent behavior from disobeying the norms, and (d ) take attention of yourself in order to act in accordance with the general behavior of the environment. Thus, the motivational statement having commitment could be seen below.

(7) “I never got to say goodbye to my father. There are questions I would've asked him. I would've asked him how he felt about what his company did, if he was conflicted, if he ever had doubts” (CMT-IRM) .

The main focus in motivational sentences ―There are questions I would've asked him. I would've asked him how he felt about what his company did, if he was conflicted, if he ever had doubts.‖ is on how a child even continues the commitments made by parents. Thus the state of the child gives full inheritance to parents.

(8) “How do I know your name? Uh ... One of my

superpowers is name-guessing. Which is really weird, I bet. Uh, it's not as cool as super-strength or super-speed, but it's really helpful when I meet new people. Are you hurt?” (CMT-IRM).

In the motivational sentence ―…One of my superpowers is name-guessing. Which is really weird, I bet, friendship relations even though they must be tightly woven.

(9) “I can't talk to fish! Even if I could, I mean, honestly, what could we do with that that's cool?” (CMT-SHZ)

In a motivational statement above an individual despite trying to find friends. For this reason, the phrase exchange to fish means that each individual though obeys a shared commitment.

(10) “So no matter how many hits I take, I always find a way to

come back. Because the only thing standing between this city and oblivion is me. There's only one Spider-Man, and you're looking at him.” (CMT-SPR)

In the motivational statement above has intended over individuals despite doing positive things to the environment. 3.1.4. COMMUNICATING IDEAS

The motivational statement could be in the form of communicating ideas. Thus, communicating ideas mean having the sympathic mindset. Thus, the sympathy mindset on communication skills consist of four main things. The four main points are (a) compromising ideas is a skill for the elaboration of knowledge, (b) the ability to elaborate ideas is the ability to make acquaintances between ideas, (c) it is essential to cooperation ideas by elaborating ideas, and (d) cooperating ideas can be done by making a middle ground from action. The other thing in sympathy mindset is reading communication gesture, those criteria in reading communication gesture are (a) looking at the macro state of an individual, (b) observing a macro expression of an individual, (c) observing a micro expression that manifested from the interaction of individuals with objects around, and (d) observing the form of interaction of an individual when listening to utterances from speech partners. The other capabilities in sympathy mindset are (a) using sentences in the form of parables, (b) packaging the message can be in the form of jokes, (c) the message to be conveyed can deliver in the form of metaphors and (d) messages conveyed in the form of presuppositions. Thus, the motivational statement communicating ideas could be seen below.

(11) “Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the

one it needs right now. So, we'll hunt for him, because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight” (CMV-BTM)

The statement ―… a silent guardian…‖ is an appearance of describing the Batman character. That mostly communicating ideas to describe his mission.

(12) “I got one plan, and that plan requires this fricki n ' quarnex battery, so FIGURE IT OUT !!! [Groot removes the panel, which hits a passing inmate on the head and knocks him out] Can I get back to it? Thanks” GOG)

Those expression in statement above that reveals that communication organizes not only rely on direct terminologies but can convey in motion and expressions such as the phrase ―…Groot removes the panel…‖ . The statement gives four important meanings in reading communication in the form of countenance of motion.

The use of figurative language ―…it threw a forklift truck like it was a softball‖ is an expression of an influential Hulk figure from the motivational statement in a bag containing four messages.

3.1.5. COMPROMISING IDEAS

The motivational statement could be in the form of compromising ideas. Thus, compromising ideas mean having the respectful mindset. Thus, the respectful mindset on communication skills consist of four main things. The four main points are (a) ability to narrate messages, (b) skills in making a description of ideas, (c) skills in expressing ideas and (d) ability to express ideas in the form of independent speech. The other thing in respectful mindset is reading communication gesture, those criteria are (a) compromising ideas to be more acceptable in society, (b) compromising ideas is a talent to elaborate ideas, (c) expanding important ideas to find substitutions to achieving ideas between individuals and (d) compromising significant ideas are used to carry out interactions between ideas running in a balanced way. The other capabilities in respectful mindset are (a) able to increase chances for socializing, (b) provide opportunities to make changes in behavior, (c) make changes to differences in views that occur, and (d) make compromises on differences in plans action and action. Thus, the motivational statement compromising ideas could be seen below.

(14) “Really? Well, on my planet, we have a legend about people like you. It's called Footloose . And in it, a great hero , named Kevin Bacon , teaches the entire city full of people with sticks up their butts that, dancing, well, is the greatest thing there is” (CPS-GOG)

The statement ―we have a legend about people like you‖ is a statement that shows an empathetic among the speaker and the speech partner. it is a statement that reveals the importance of the idea of compromise.

(15) The motivational statement “If you could have one

superpower, flight or invisibility, what would you pick? Everybody chooses flight. Do you know why?” (CPS-SHZ)

The statement ―If you could have one superpower, flight or invisibility‖ is an expression that states that an individual has various things to make choices. In the motivational declaration above exposed that the role of compromising ideas has an essential role in life.

(16) “Are you making some, like, big, evil-guy speech right now or something '? You like a mile away from me, and there's traffic and cars and stuff! All I see is mouth-moving” (CPS-SHZ)

The statement ―You're like a mile away from me, and there's traffic and cars and stuff!‖ is a conclusion that the distance between the speaker and the speech partner can bring closer. 3.1.6. CONCERNED ABOUT LIFE BASED ON

THE SITUATION

The motivational statement could be in the form of concerned about life based on the situation. Thus, concerned about life based on the situation means have compensative mindset.

Thus, the compensative mindset on concerning about life based situation reflect on four main things. The four main points are (a) being material for correction of one's behavior, (b) providing occasions to collaborate with others, (c) providing openings for individuals to build understanding and (d) providing a perspective of self-adjustment on the environment. The other thing in compensative mindset are (a) the skill to see the needs that exist in the surrounding environment, (b) the assistances to care for the needs that exist in the environment, (c) the ability to interact with others, and (d) the capability of individuals to move for the same purpose. The other capabilities in compensative mindset are (a) the skills to elaborate data regarding the environment, (b) the ability to keep the interactions of fellow humanoid beings consecutively smoothly, (c) the ability to keep each individual trying and employed hard as one with others and (d) the capability to keep human actualities able to give real contribution to the surrounding environment. Thus, the motivational statement concerned about life based situation could be seen below. (17) “Look, man, maybe this is magic, and, I don't know, but

the people you're looking for, good, pure people, I'm not one of them. I I don't know if anyone is, really” (CRE-SHZ)

The statement ―Look, man, maybe this is magic, and, I don't know, but the people you're looking for, good, pure people, I'm not one of them‖ shows that the surrounding atmosphere also has its perceptions towards individuals. The motivational statement shows the importance of paying attention to the environmental perceptions of a person.

(18) “You're not just anyone , Clark, and I have to believe that you're here for a reason . All of these changes you're going through, one day – one day, you're going to think of them as a blessing, and when that day comes, you're going to have to make a choice: a choice of whether to stand proud in front of the human race or not” (CRE-MOS) shows that caring for the environment is a necessity for individuals.

The statement ―when that day comes, you're goin' a have to make a choice: a choice of whether to stand proud in front of the human race or not‖ shows to folks that putting people's interests ahead of personal interests is a form social interaction with the environment.

(19) “We found you in this. We were sure the government was

gonna show up on our doorstep. No one ever came. [He hands him the key] This was in the chamber with your diapers. I took it to a metallurgist at Kansas State. He said whatever it was made from didn't even exist on the periodic table. It's another way of saying it's not from this world, Clark, and neither are you ... You're the answer, son. You're the answer to "Are we alone in the universe?"(CPE-MOS)

3.1.7. HAVING A HARD WORK SPIRIT

The motivational statement could be in the form of having a hard work spirit. Thus, having a hard work spirit means have reflective mindset. Thus, the reflective mindset on having a hard work spirit reflect on four main things. The four main points are (a) having the opportunity to make the maximum effort, (b) being willing to work with full dedication, (c) being willing to work and trying as much as possible to achieve maximum effort and (d) trying to work hard to achieve goals. The other thing in reflective mindset is reading communication gesture, those criteria are (a) make every single effort to achieve their goals, (b) organize hard work in the form of relationships, (c) develop themselves in the method of training, and (d) behavior research and efforts to achieve maximum results. The other capabilities in reflective mindset are (a) getting learning to innovate, (b) doing the whole thing optimally, (c) doing performance by learning from the experienced, and (d) doing everything by showing observable and measurable works. Thus, the motivational statement having a hard work spirit could be seen below.

(20) “It has been said through the ages without sacrifice there

can be no victory. Two species at war, one flesh, one metal. Optimus Prime has left us. One hundred billion trillion planets in the cosmos. You want to know, don't you, why do you keep coming here, to earth? And now two worlds colliding, but only one survives” (HRW-TRM)

The statement ―It has been said through the ages without sacrifice there can be no victory.‖ indicates that individuals need to make maximum efforts to achieve their goals. This concept is a part of hard work that demands that every individual is willing to reach the success.

(21) “I don't know what you've got inside you already. The mixture can become ... an abomination. [Blonsky grabs Dr. Sterns by the collar and raises him into the water] I didn't say I was unwilling ... I just needed informed consent ... and you've given it!” (HRW-HLK).

The statement ―I don't know what you've got inside you already.‖ Shows the hard work spirit is needed to determine the obstacles in daily life.

(22) The statement “It started as a legend, one of the greatest

of all. For a thousand years we've kept it hidden to protect the earth from what was destined to arrive” (HRW-TRM).

The statement ―For a thousand years we've kept it hidden to protect the earth from what was destined to arrive‖ gives an appearance that individuals, although trying their best to reach their objectives with a form of real work.

3.1.8. HAVING A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY

The motivational statement could be in the form of having sense of responsibility. having sense of responsibility mean acquired the insightful mindset. Thus, the insightful mindset on having sense of responsibility consist of four main things. The four main points are (a) efforts to generate social relations with colleagues, (b) efforts to create a presentation that does not damage the environment, (c) efforts near create good relationships with efforts, and (d) efforts near create

relationships social with society. The other things in insightful mindset are (a) trying to act logically and measured, (b) trying to turn appropriately and real, (c) trying to keep the association running optimally and (d) trying towards establish relationships and collaborate in order to create work transparency. The other capabilities in insightful mindset are (a) able to contribute to the environment optimally, (b) achieve social functions optimally, (c) assist folks who need it, and (d) effort to carry out no maximum social norms. Thus, the motivational statement having a sense of responsibility could be seen below.

(23) “Remember those experiments we volunteered for at

Harvard? Those induced hallucinations? It's a lot like that, just a thousand times amplified. It's like someone poured a liter of acid into my brain” (RPD- HLK).

The statement ―it's a lot like that, just a thousand times amplified‖ shows that the skills to process have a tolerable role to do something accompanied by effort.

(24) “Oh, you don't ... What are you doing here, Lang? You have not paid a dime to child support. You know, right now, I will have no choice but to arrest you” (RPD-ANT)

The statement ―You haven't paid a dime to child support. You know, right now, I will have no choice but to arrest you‖ shows that every separate despite trying to be responsible for the significances of actions and provide opportunities for individuals to be able to act wisely by prioritizing the principle of doing what can do.

(25) “With great power, comes great responsibility”

(RPD-SPR) shows that responsibility can also obtained by entrusting force.”

The statement ―with great power, comes great responsibility‖ to give a sign that the responsibility in the usage position is part of character education.

DISCUSSIONS

(1) Recognizing accomplishments of others means respecting other person works. The component of recognizing accomplishments of others are mastering science, managing time and planning accurately. Thus, there are some cultural theme for each component which describe in Table 1 below.

Communicating ideas means speak up brilliant thoughts. The component of communicating ideas means speak up ideas, interpreting others and paralyzing ideas. Thus, there are some cultural theme for each component which describe in Table 4 below.

Based on these descriptions, withdraws synthesis that a motivational statement on children's film has four functions. Those purposes for educational development of character building are (1) gives the spirit to make every effort, (2) provide an example of good deeds in the past, (3) provide patterns of causation following the consequences of the events that occurred, and (4) provide an understanding of the sense of responsibility for ownership of something following responsibilities. It suggests that the children's film has the feel of character education in terms of the messages conveyed either explicitly or implicitly (Jernigan, 2017).

CONCLUSIONS

In a children's film, the behavior of individual figures associated with the presence of the surrounding environment. Implicatures in motivational statement transported by linking the individual to the environment. Implicatures statements may be acknowledged through the development of characterizations based on individual behavior. Implicatures in motivational statement comprises the values and moral education. Based on these results it could be concluded that the child's motivation contained in the film is part of the strengthening of character education and have a role in the development of character.
