Why another Anatomy and Physiology laboratory manual? There are literally hundreds of A&P lab manuals in the marketplace today, so why did I see the need to create yet another one? My reasoning: simplicity, clarity, and cost effective for both students and schools. I set out to create a lab manual that presented anatomy and physiology in a simple and easily understandable way. This manual functions as a workbook to effectively guide students through any introductory anatomy and physiology course. It is designed to complement any instructor’s lecture material as well as any basic anatomy and physiology textbook. It complements the partner book without competing for the student’s attention. Rather, students can use the lab manual to work with the book, not separately from the book.

In an attempt to be a one-size-fits-all, many manuals will contain not only anatomy and physiology, but also pathophysiology and pharmacology. As a result students who are trying to learn basic A&P struggle with the pathophysiology and pharmacology information much too early in their career. This distracts students from the topic at hand and can prevent them from developing a foundation in the basic science that is necessary for future success. Here I present the anatomy and physiology that all health students must know. Once students master the material presented in a laboratory section, they will have a firm foundation and will be well prepared to progress in their studies.

Too often lab manuals reproduce material that is already presented in the lecture and textbook. Students are often overwhelmed with the amount of information and are unsure of what they truly need to know. In this manual I have streamlined and simplified the presentation of the material to be at the appropriate level for introductory health students.

This simple, straightforward delivery covers all the basic information, and leaves room for instructors to add any examples they choose. Every organ system is presented with an emphasis on the relevant anatomy and physiology. Simple experiments are proposed that clearly demonstrate complex topics. Through figure labeling and answering questions based on function, students are able to make connections between form and function, without being overwhelmed with unnecessarily complex concepts that are beyond what the introductory health student needs to know. Rather than provide complicated experiments that require costly equipment that many labs may not have, I present simple activities that rely on basic equipment available in almost all lab settings to enforce the critical content needed at the introductory level.

In my 10 years as an instructor I have found lab activities like those included here to be effective learning tools for my students. The hands-on approach and tangible learning process of lab activities reinforce the material in a way that is not possible with lectures and reading alone, yet the simplicity of these activities focuses on the core anatomy and physiology material without overwhelming the student with extras, the way many other lab manuals do. I hope you and your students will find this lab manual to be as beneficial as my students and I have.
