FOREWORD
I am extremely happy to express my heartfelt greetings on this memorable opening of the grand exhibition of remarkable works done by the students and colleagues of the University of Minnesota, a sister institution in faraway America.
It is to be long remembered that in the summer of 1957 a collection of works by students and faculty of College of Fine Arts of Seoul National University was sent at its cordial invitation to the University of Minnesota campus. The exhibition, to our full satisfaction, was highly appreciated by all the arts-loving people of the United States. It is trus that the exchange of works of the two great universities symbolizes the
· common aspiration and ideals long cherished in our hearts.

In 1954 the University ot Minnesota entered into a contract with thei U.S. International Cooperation Administration that created a cooperative

arrangement with Seoul National University, and the two universities have been .partners in this effort ever since.As part of the Cooperative Project, we have for the past four years had direct exchange of faculty in the fields of agriculture, medicine, and
! engineering. The University of Minnesota has made a great contribution to :the basic recovery of the economy and well-being of the Republic of Korea.
Now it was kind enough on the part of the University of Minnesota as to have initiated this wonderful exchange of fine arts between two

"This idea of an exchange of student work met instant acceptance when it was first broached to Dr. Kyu-Nam Choi, then the President of Seoul National University and now Minister of Education of the Republic of Korea. It likewise had the enthusiastic approval of Dr.

In general, one can say that physical civilization may be cultiva from the advanced to the underdeveloped, but no mutual exchange understanding is expected in spiritual art unless both parties come the level which enables them to understand it.
It is not an easy task to fulfill exchange of spiritual culture, b se ot present we are just on the first step engaging in this ent whereas we have a history of 50 centuries that is now being studi by westerners for the first time and we also are making rec"'a' on Occidental history with renewed method after cultivating we had possessed. Bearing the above in our minds, we would hesitate to say that this art exhibit is a most significant because now we are ready to meet each other where we would wit Jingly understand and agree with the similar feeling and emotion the higher beings between these two countries.
Genuine culture can be established under these circumstances gether with true peace h?lding us never be forsaken.
