Graduation Survey Results for
Wingate University May 2011 Graduating Class
Mission of the Office of Internships and Career Services
The Office of Internships and Career Services provides all students and alumni with knowledge and resources to empower them to take an active role in their career planning.
Overview/Goals of Survey
To determine graduate outcomes such as enrollment in graduate school or attainment of first position. To determine first destination for undergraduate students who completed their degrees in May 2011. To enhance our office’s services and offerings.
To continually evaluate our office’s support of students’ career planning, our efforts to educate students on managing their careers, and our achievement of our mission.
The Office of Internships and Career Services conducts two surveys for each graduating class. The information in this document was gathered using the methods outlined below.
Day of Graduation Survey Method:
The Office of Internships and Career Services…
o Prepared an electronic survey.
o Emailed a link for the survey to all graduating seniors in mid- to late-March 2011.
o Sent follow up e-mails and made calls during the month of April 2011 to encourage participation.
o Handed out surveys and pencils to students who had not completed the survey on the day of graduation practice (May 13, 2011).
Results: 213 surveys were completed out of 233 graduating seniors (91% completion rate)
On this Day of Graduation Survey, we asked for a personal email address so that we could keep in touch with seniors and so that we could contact students for the Follow Up Survey in late 2011 – early 2012.
Follow Up Survey Method:
The Office of Internships and Career Services…
o Prepared an electronic survey.
o Emailed an electronic survey in December 2011 to all seniors who had completed the May 2011 survey but who had not yet secured employment or enrolled in graduate school (118 students.)
o Sent reminders to encourage participation.
o Made follow up phone calls to those who had not replied to the Follow Up Survey and gathered student information through online searches when appropriate.
Results: 72 surveys were completed out of the 118 graduates who were sent the Follow Up survey (60% completion rate).
As of 3/26/2012, 46 students had not responded to the Follow Up survey.
As you read this report and consider our results, please keep in mind that we did not hear from these 46 students and were not able to reach them by phone. Had all of them responded, it is quite likely that our numbers would change.
Results (Graduate School):
Compiling both the Day of Graduation Survey and Follow Up Survey results yields the following: Number of students who had applied to graduate school as of the Day of Graduation? 58/213. Of the 58, number accepted to graduate school? 49/58 were accepted.
o On the Day of Graduation Survey, 42/58 had been accepted.
o On the Follow Up Survey, an additional 7/58 had been accepted.
o Therefore, 42 + 7 = 49 of the original 58 were accepted.
o Number of additional students on Follow Up Survey who stated that they had been accepted to graduate school? Eight additional students had been accepted (previously had not reported that they had even applied to graduate school.) This makes the total who applied to graduate school: 58 + 8 = 66/213 (31% of entire class applied.)
o Therefore, the total students who report being accepted into graduate school is 49 + 8 = 57. (57/66 = 86% of those applying were accepted.)
o As an added note, the percent of entire class who were accepted to graduate school: 57/213 = 27%. Some of the students who were accepted to graduate school also reported being employed. Many of them are
working part-time jobs or graduate assistant positions. We counted them only on the side of graduate school and not on the employment side.
On a special note, we also asked students if they had originally been part of one of the pre-professional programs when they enrolled at Wingate (programs such as pre-pharmacy, pre-dentistry, pre-ministry etc.)
o We found that 35 students were originally in one of the pre-professional programs. (35/213 = 16%.)
o Of those 35, only 8 remained in the pre-professional programs by the time of the Day of Graduation Survey (8/35 = 23%).
o Of those 8, only 4 actually applied to graduate school, and all 4 were accepted by at least one graduate school (100%).
o Programs of Study for these 4 students are…
University of Maryland School of Dentistry Dentistry Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine Pharmacy
Wingate University Doctor of Pharmacy
DeVry Medical Program
Note: These 4 entries are also included in chart below (list of all student reported graduate study.)

Results (Employment):

students (156 – 46 = 110).
Number of remaining 110 students who had secured employment? 104/110 (95%).
o 55 on the Day of Graduation.

Overview of First Position Salary:
On the Day of Graduation Survey only, we asked students about their salary in their first position out of college. The reason that we ask this question is to ascertain whether or not students who have completed an internship fare better when seeking employment. This question was an optional question, and 28/213 answered the question. We then compared those answers with another question on the survey, “Did you complete an internship while at Wingate University?” The results are listed below:
Under $30,000 per year
For those who did not complete an internship and who answered our salary question, 70% of them reported earning under $30,000 per year.
For those who did complete an internship and who answered our salary question, 44% of them reported earning under $30,000 per year.
$30,001 - $35,000 per year
In contrast, for those who did not complete an internship and who answered our salary question, 10% of them reported earning $30,001 - $35,000 per year.
For those who did complete an internship and who answered our salary question, 27% of them reported earning $30,001 - $35,000 per year.
We did not ask this salary question on the Follow Up Survey.
Additional Information
The responses that we collect are critical in preparation of this survey. The information helps other Wingate students to understand the options available to them and to help them prepare for their own futures. We hope that alumni, current students, and prospective students will find this information to be helpful.
In addition, the Office of Internships and Career Services uses this survey method to comply with the Higher Education Opportunities Act.
