Every effort is being made to begin in person gathering March 20/21 (at the earliest)

as long as the goals are met regarding the volunteers and that the positivity rate is

consistent with the guidelines given by the Bishop and Conference.

Once it becomes safe to return to in-person worship we will need volunteers to help

with set-up, greeting, ushering, clean-up, etc. We anticipate crews of 5-6 would be

adequate for each service. We may be offering a Saturday afternoon worship

expe-rience in addition to our 10 a.m. Sunday service.

These volunteer teams will be NECESSARY to help us safely gather for worship.

Please prayerfully consider volunteering to help make this possible.

MESSAGES FROM PASTOR JIM Lenten Worship Series

I pray you’ll join us for worship* each Sunday throughout Lent as we focus on the truth that each of us is created a precious and holy vessel of embod-ied love.

We have been through a harrowing year which, for many of us, has shat-tered our sense of wholeness…body, mind, and spirit…like a glass vessel fractured into pieces.

In this Lenten “season of recovery” for our physical, communal, mental, in-tellectual and environmental health, we’ll explore the healing narratives of Jesus which tell of God’s presence with us even as we suffer. We’ll be re-minded that we can begin a journey toward making something beautiful from that which is seemingly broken.

We Have TWO Lenten Studies Coming Up

We’re offering TWO Lenten Studies at Grace this year. Choose the one which best fits your interests or schedule…or participate in BOTH! Our Tuesday evening group will be using a book entitled “The Walk” by Rev. Adam Hamilton. We’ll explore five essential spiritual practices

rooted in Jesus’ own walk with God. This study begins Tues, February 16 at 7 p.m. via Zoom.

This is the link for each of the 6 sessions: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88197446725

Don’t use the computer? You may use your cell phone to connect with this or any of our other Zoom gatherings. Contact Pastor Jim for details.

Our other Lenten study, with options on Saturdays or Sundays at 1 p.m., is entitled, “The Grace of Les Miserables”. It dives into 6 ideals found in this classic story…grace, justice, poverty, revolution, love and hope. You do NOT need to be familiar with Les Miserables…the book OR film…to get into this study. The author gives us all the background we’ll need.

This study begins the weekend of Feb. 20 and 21 and runs for

six weeks. Choose the sessions (Saturday or Sunday) which fit your schedule. Remember…if you don’t use a computer, you may call in to any of our Zoom gatherings. Pastor Jim has the details.

All sessions will happen via Zoom and participants may join the discussions by phone or computer. Participants may purchase books for either study on the Cokesbury website or other book sellers. .

Twelfth Night

Had this been a more

nor-mal year, Grace and our

Sol-id Brass Handbell Choir

would have hosted the 40

th

Anniversary Twelfth Night

Handbell Festival. Grace

Church has been part of

eve-ry one of those previous 39 festivals. In fact Grace was one of three

churches at the very first Twelfth Night, a collaboration founded by Sioux

City native Eleanor Tasker. During this summer’s planning session, the

Handbell Directors commissioned an anthem to be debuted at this year’s

Twelfth Night and dedicated to Eleanor and her vision.

Sadly, Twelfth Night 2021 was cancelled. But we had the music. First

Pres-byterian Church had the room in their sanctuary space to hold socially

dis-tanced rehearsals. They recorded a performance. On the Sunday that

would have been our festival date, the directors gathered and surprised

Eleanor with an inscribed copy of the music and played the performance

FOOD PANTRY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The food pantry is looking for some muscle!

If you are able bodied and available Monday, February 8th at 3:45pm to

approximately 5:00pm, we could sure use your help.

We need volunteers to help with the loading and transportation of food from the

Food Bank located at 1313 11th street, and volunteers to unload the food at the

church. We also need pickups or SUVS to help with transportation of food.

Our goal is to have a food pick-up from the Food Bank on the 2nd Monday of each

month.

The next food pick-up will be Monday, March 8th.

Please contact Marcia Eriksen to let her know how you can help.

4 As many of you are already aware, a serious fire broke out late Sunday afternoon in the apartment complex across from Grace United Methodist Church.

Fortunately, Don and Marta Nelson were visiting with their daughter, Erin, who lives nearby. Don leapt into action, immediately going to Grace to open our doors to anyone needing shelter from the cold and smoke.

Marta and Erin were soon at church as well, along with Betty and Jim Watkins…all offering emotional support… and even coffee and snacks…to as many as 30 people who were temporarily sheltering at Grace. Bev Shirbroun was there too, being particularly attentive to one little guy who was pretty traumatized by his experience.

(I confess that, while Don was making coffee, I “raided” the Food Pantry supplies for some cookies and hot choco-late mix to augment the support. Erin Nelson added to the spontaneous “smorgasbord” with some goodies from her home.)

It was a blessing, but no surprise, to see our Grace family respond so quickly and wonderfully. I received many texts and phone calls offering assistance, clothing, blankets and more from Grace members. (I was also reminded that it’s not such a bad thing to have a semi-cluttered office. One of our guests was without socks. Another was without shoes. I managed to find both in my office!)

Special thanks, of course, go out to the fire crews and law enforcement folks who were also providing loving care to those displaced by the fire…and to the Red Cross folks who came to arrange emergency housing for those who needed it. There were also some Mickey Mouse toys given by the Red Cross staff to some wonderful children. The kids were SO well behaved, even after having been at Grace for more than 3 hours. I was blessed to make some new friends in the midst of a terrible situation.

Thanks as well to Rev. Andy Nelson, Morningside Chaplain (no blood relation to the aforementioned Nelson clan...but a definite spiritual sibling!) Andy came over to connect with at least one M'side student who lived in the apartment building which was destroyed.

I know I’m not the only one who was and is reflecting that our Grace building was completely destroyed by fire on Jan. 31, 1957…64 years ago almost to the day. The sheltering presence of our Grace building…and our people… are a great testimony that, risen from our own ashes, we remain strong in our witness to and ministry with God’s people.

Shortly after I arrived at the church last night, Don Nelson, took me aside. Don had served as our lector in wor-ship just 8 hours earlier. With a voice now quavering with emotion, Don said, “That scripture this morning…we’re here serving”. The text we read together that morning was Romans 12:3-8.

Blessings all. jim

Bev and I want to thank everyone who contributed to the Christmas Gifts given to our Grace Staff. Thanks, too, to our Grace Staff Parish Relations Committee for coordinating the process.

Blessings all…

Bev and Jim Shirbroun

This just in to the Chimes Newsroom.

Our Grace Ash Wednesday Worship Experience may be heard from 7-7:30 p.m. on February 17 on radio station KSCJ. We hope you are able to join us for this quiet, contemplative start to the Lenten Season.

Finance Report Update

As we closed the books for 2020, we were able to keep current with all church operat-ing expenses and also pay $50,000 toward our connectional giving, or over 75% of the conference asking. This was a substantial increase over 2019. Although contributions were down, expenses were also down. The Trustees helped out by paying $8,600 in

property insurance expenses from the Tower Fund. We also obtained a forgivable Payroll Protection Loan which allowed us to

keep all church employees on the pay-roll. A big THANK YOU to everyone for continuing to support our church, even as

we are unable to meet in person.

“My Offering” Envelopes have arrived and many of you have stopped by to get

your envelopes, however, we still have about 65 left to be picked up.

Since our church is closed at the present time, you can come between the

hours of 9AM until 1:00PM, Tuesday through Thursday OR Monday and

Fri-days 9AM – Noon. Just call the office at (712) 276-3452 when you arrive and I

will meet you at the door with your envelopes.

Camps Funding Request

Our District Superintendent, Rev. Ron Carlson, recognizes the fact that our Grace community of faith has been and continues to be one of the big-gest supporters of United Methodist Camps. Ron is asking if Grace will show our support of Camp Okoboji, and the United Methodist Camps in Iowa in general, with a gift of $1000 in 2021. If you would like to be a part of this opportunity you may send a special offering to the Grace office. Please indicate “Camp Offering” with your check.

Human Relations

Sunday Offering Opportunity

Sunday, January 17 was Human Relations Sunday. This day is one of six special Sundays with offerings designated by our General Conference.

I mentioned the offering briefly in worship on the 17th but wanted to remind you all of this opportunity to join United Methodists from across the United States in supporting some crucial ministries.

Your gifts are part of building beloved community through faith-based volunteer programs, community developers and programs that work with at-risk teens. As society begins to recover from this health and fi-nancial crisis, these programs are vital in strengthen-ing communities that are most affected.

Now more than ever, the church is invited to connect with our neighbors, join our resources, and come and see how together we can be the hands and feet of Jesus. Please give generously, trusting that your gifts will be multiplied and “you will see greater things than these.” (John 1:50)

You may send a special offering to the Grace office. Please indicate “Human Relations” with your check.

RADIO SPONSORSHIP

GRACE SUNDAY WORSHIP BROADCAST ON RADIO STATION KSCJ CHANNEL 1360 If you are unable to join us for worship on Sunday mornings or if you know of some-one who is unable to attend, please listen to KSCJ frequency 1360 AM & 94.9 FM to hear a live radio broadcast of the 10am Sunday worship service each Sun-day. You can also go to www.kscj.com to listen to it live on the web. If you would like to help sponsor a Sunday broad-cast, please contact the church office at 276-3452 or send in your donation and we will put your name on the list. Each broadcast costs $125 to air. don’t forget to include those!

You are important to us. In order to help us take care of you, we need to keep your

Having the church database updated with each person’s information will aid in better

Kim has asked for our help in informing Joan

s friends about this milestone and to

shower this young lady with cards and good wishes.

Since we are asking all members to update their information for better communication, We have

started to put in the birthdays and anniversaries of our members. What fun it is to receive a card

Dear VBS Volunteers!

Grace UMC would like to invite you to play an important role in our summer Christian Ministry from June 6 through June 10th. We were so grateful for your time and talents, that we would love for you to participate in the 2021 Session of Knights of North Castle.

At this time we are planning to meet in person in a small group setting, but are making preparations

for a similar program virtually if needed. The students will enjoy an interactive, energizing, Bible-based

February Spiritual Activities & Practices

The purpose is to enjoy spending quality time together through creative & intellectual projects, while sparking family & faith based discussions. These activities are just suggestions. We encourage your family to do at least two within a month's time span.

WELCOME TO FAITH FAMILY CLUB!

Combining Spirituality, Community and Fun

You are welcome to be part of Faith Family Club. Children will learn about God’s love for them and about the Bible, and they’ll have fun experiences with their families.

Outdoor: Ice Globes— A fun & easy family activity for limited Supplies such as: Bal-loons, & Colored Dye or a Tea Light. Fill your balloon with water and then add a col-ored dye to it (if you want something other than clear). Then either take them outside to freeze or place them in the freezer. Once they are frozen solid, cut the balloon off of the ice sphere and place the now frozen globe outside where you can enjoy it while the weather lasts. For extended fun, place a tea light in the snow first, then place your ice globe over it for illuminating fun.

Outdoor spiritual connection: As you do this, think & talk about the complexity of mankind and how although we may all look similar (Balloons) on the outside, on the inside (frozen water) we are all made the same, yet we’re different from each other. Our “frozen water” doesn’t look the exact same as everyone else, because we all have unique person-alities that make us each special individuals.

Artistic: Family Valentines— Everyone in your family writes a heartfelt valentine/note for each other member in your household. You should receive one for each

member you wrote one for. Have a different bag or location for each member’s valentine notes to be placed.

Artistic spiritual connection: The goal is to remind your loved ones what you love and

ap-preciate most about them. It is encouraged to read these aloud in front of your family, but you can certainly do this in private too.

Movie: Zootopia— This animated 2016 to-be-classic Disney movie, is all about a society of ani-mals overcoming stereotypes and coming together despite their differences.

Movie spiritual connection: In honor of February being Black History Month, talk with your family about the various forms of Diversity & overt racism portrayed in the film. Reflect and compare the society of Zootopia to our American society. What differences and similarities do you notice?

Innovative: Hello Kitchen— Each member of your family will be responsible for providing a part of dinner for a family potluck. This meal will certainly be a variety of food, creating a smorgasbord as each person must cook/prepare something “on their own” and provide it for the whole family as part of the meal that night. This includes appetizers, entrees & desserts if desired, and this can be as easy as someone buying a bag of chips that they like and sharing it with everyone. The catch is… you can’t communicate with one another which foods you’ll each be providing. **Note—Obviously small children should have guidance from one person.

Innovative spiritual connection: The objective is to create a fun experience and atmosphere for the whole family as you (hopefully) learn how to cook/create new foods for one another. Make sure to pray before your meal and think about how thankful and grateful you are to have your loved ones provide a meal for you. **Suggestion—regardless if you cook or buy something from the store, everyone should do their best to be actively present during the

prepara-tion of this dinner meal. This example of “too many cooks in the kitchen” is highly recommended as it encourages

So you will have the opportunity to send multiple hugs in an adorable way to whomever they’re missing.

We will also have a downloadable PDF that you can print off as many as you like on our children's

minis-try page at gracesiouxcity.org.

Parents, grandparents, friends, cousins, teachers... who doesn’t want to get a hug in the mail? There’s

something extra special about getting something in the real mail - the extra effort to find a stamp, go to

the post box, let alone write the letter to someone who might be loneyly... it shows some extra effort and

care, especially in today's oh-so digital world full of screens and e-learning. This little something

different can make our people feel that much more special. And be sure to thank your mail carrier for

their essential service too in helping to deliver your letter!

Life looks so different right now. If you

asked your kids what’s the one thing

they miss the most right now, what

would they say? The park, play dates,

family, friends...

We all miss our people and can’t wait to

give them a big squeeze once this need

for social distancing softens. And until

that time, we’ll continue to get creative

on how to stay connected and make

each other feel love from a distance.

We will be providing a larger copy in the weekly Sunday School News letters each week in February.

Friends-

As chairperson of our Christian Education Committee, I wanted to take this opportunity to share a “God mo-ment” with you. As you know, Brock and Tamera transitioned to Co-Directors of Christian Education at the be-ginning of the COVID pandemic in Iowa. With our church closed to in-person gatherings, Brock and Tamera were forced to become very creative with the education opportunities for the children and youth of our church family. They have met and exceeded this challenge. If you have not already witnessed their hard work and creativity, check out the links on the church website. Not only are they impacting the lives of children and youth in Sioux City but we have received correspondence from churches in Illinois and New York where their ministry is also touching the lives of children and youth. Below is an excerpt from one of those communications:

“…I am contacting you, to thank you for the resources you share on your church website and YouTube Channel. Due to the burden of virtual school learning on families, we do not have a structured Sunday School class. We refer our families to online resources for those who would like additional lessons. We will be celebrating the Baptism of Jesus this Sunday, and when I did a search for a children’s lesson, I found your website. I’ll be sharing your website with our viewers on Sunday. I’m not sure how many fam-ilies regularly access our shared inks, but for those who do this will be a terrific choice. Thank you! I am very grateful for your lessons myself. After watching your video from last week, I have been reflecting on how we can be in community during the pandemic. Our congregation have maintained contact by sharing monthly home delivery bags. We have sent candles, cookies and many different things to tie into our services. Thanks to your Sunday School lesson, I was inspired to start a new outreach that we are calling Bake It For-ward. We’ll send each family a bag of chocolate chip cookies and a jar or chocolate chip cookie ingredients. We’ll ask our families to make the jar of cookies for a friend or family who could use a pick me up during this long, dark winter. If they are willing, they can also wash and refill the jar so the next family can pass it on. It may be a small thing, but we hope to bring some joy to our community.

I’d like to thank you for inspiring this outreach. It sometimes feels to me that we are like voices shouting in the dark during this time. I hope this message encourages you to know that your voice is being heard and spreading hope across the country. Thank you for sharing your voice of hope. We greatly appreciate it!”

With peace and gratitude, Eileen McNabb

Truly God is at work in the ministry Brock and Tamera are offering. If you are so inclined, please let Brock and Tamera know how much you appreciate all they do, for our children and youth as well those outside our church family and across our city, state and country.
