Welcome to DeGroote

Dean Leonard Waverman

DeGroote School of Business When I ask our MBA students what’s special about the DeGroote MBA, I hear over and over it’s the community. They use words like fun, friendly, diversity, experience, helpful.

Your classmates are your friends. You connect over business concepts, group projects, exams and presentations. You bond through competitions, charitable activities and social events. The faculty are your partners, pushing you to think critically, acquire the latest knowledge and apply your learnings. Our staff are your cheerleaders, guiding you through the program and supporting your development. Alumni are your advocates, mentoring you, hiring you and endorsing you. With an MBA, you will be equipped with the real-world skills and knowledge to thrive in a rapidly changing business environment. With an MBA from DeGroote, you will acquire those skills and knowledge through a unique and exciting student experience, as part of a collaborative, supportive, fun community.

Sarah Lake,

MBA Student Ambassador

I came from a science background, studying biological sciences at the University of Western Ontario. I quickly realized in my final year, however, that the skills I had developed while completing an honours research project were better suited to a career in business. DeGroote was an opportunity for me to challenge myself academically, personally and professionally and I was both nervous and excited to trade my lab coat for a suit. I started at DeGroote in September 2012, and it did not take long to recognize that the co-op program was my best investment to ensure future success. DeGroote offered a program that would provide not only a strong business foundation but also the necessary work experience to build my thin resume. Equally as valuable to me as the academics and experiential learning offered at DeGroote were the involvement opportunities. Incoming students, I encourage you to take challenges head on and allow yourself to deviate from your intended path or plan. The toughest, but most exciting reality I have learned, as an avid planner myself, is that you can’t plan anything. Take advantage of the development opportunities, because these will not only enhance your DeGroote experience but will open new doors you didn’t know were available.

Full-time MBA

The DeGroote full-time MBA is a carefully blended combi-nation of practical and theoretical business education. The 16-month program** includes an emphasis on both the learning of business fundamentals, and the development of practical skills required for you to advance your career. It is intended for those with at least one year of managerial, professional, or technical work experience.

** As the MBA program is currently undergoing a curriculum redesign, it is possible that not all specializations will be available in a 16-month schedule. With planning, students may also choose to complete the program in 20 months and take the summer off. For the most up-to-date information, please visit our web site at mbarecruit.degroote.mcmaster.ca.

Part-time MBA

For students wishing to complete their MBA but unable to commit to a full-time study schedule, the DeGroote part-time option is an ideal alternative. This option allows you to set your own timetable, taking courses as you are able and gives you the flexibility and balance you require. For your convenience, MBA courses are offered in the daytime and evening in each of the 3 terms in a year allowing you to work while earning your degree. In terms of completing your program, you may take up to two courses per term, with the option of taking entire terms off, if needed. You have a maximum of 8 years to complete your degree.

Accelerated MBA

If you have already completed a recognized undergraduate business degree within the last 10 years (subject to Gradu-ate Council approval), or are a graduGradu-ate of McMaster Uni-versity’s Engineering and Management program, you may be eligible for advanced standing in year one and admitted directly into year two. You can earn your MBA degree in as little as 8 months of full-time study, or 20 months of part-time study. Candidates from a non-business academic background and who have at least seven equivalent courses with B grades will be considered on a case-by-case basis for this option. It is intended for those with at least one year of managerial, professional, or technical work experience.

“I am taking away inspiration from this journey,” says DeGroote MBA Games 2012 Co-Chair, Alex Paton. “It has cemented in my brain that if you really hit the pavement and commit to something 100% and believe in it whole-heartedly – it will pay off in the end. Winning the 2012 MBA Games has proven to me that if you work hard, good things will come your way.”

Specializations

An added benefit to the DeGroote MBA is the opportunity to concentrate your studies in a specific business field.

Specializations are offered in a variety of areas and are completed in the second year of the program, allowing students the opportunities to further hone their career marketability by emerging with an MBA degree within a specialized field. You can also select a general MBA stream in the second year, which allows you to receive a broader overview of all management disciplines.

Accounting & Financial

Management Services

This specialization, which emphasizes the fundamental theories and current issues in corporate governance and financial reporting, opens doors to a variety of career op-tions, such as financial reporting, public accounting, audit-ing and assurance, forensic accountaudit-ing, taxation, business valuations or bankruptcy trusteeship.

Graduates can also pursue professional accounting/financial designations such as Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA-Canada), Certified General Accountant (CGA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA-US), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), and Chartered Business Valuator (CBV).

Finance

Graduates look forward to a wide variety of career op-portunities, including investment management, investment banking, treasury and controllership, public sector financial analysis and management or management consulting. Course offerings also provide most of the finance and economics preparation required to complete Levels I and II of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) syllabus.

Health Services Management

(certain restrictions may apply)

The DeGroote HSM specialization has become Canada’s gold standard for graduate health management education. HSM combines expertise found in the DeGroote School of Business with hands-on training gained through work expe-rience in either public or private health care organizations. DeGroote's alliance with the Canadian College of Health Service Executives (CCHSE) allows HSM students to fast track their Certified Health Executive designation while earning their MBA degree.

Management

Co-op | Full-time | Accelerated | Part-time 11

Management of Innovation

and New Technology

The innovative commercialization of science and technol-ogy in such sectors as pharmaceuticals, biotech, aerospace, telecommunications, software and electronics is revolution-izing how business is done.

Although many students with technical backgrounds take this specialization because it provides a unique way to leverage technical skills, a substantial number of students without technical backgrounds select it because it provides generalized capabilities for managing innovation.

General

The General MBA takes a holistic approach to prepare you for positions that require the ability to co-ordinate and man-age across several functional business areas.

The General MBA is a popular choice for those who are looking to advance to upper levels of management, or for those who intend to start their own business or enterprise.

Strategic Business Valuation

The Strategic Business Valuation specialization is intended to train financial professionals in the best practices for business valuation.

The purpose is to profile firms accurately in order to identify those that meet rigorous standards of excellence and growth. The underlying philosophy of this approach is that wise investments are made for the long run rather than for quick returns through rapid buying and selling. Such long-term financial health and growth can only be assessed through a complete analysis of the firm.

Strategic Marketing

The most sought-after marketers in today’s diverse, global economy are ones who understand the psychology, sociology and politics of customer behaviour as it applies to both con-sumer and business markets – domestic and international. In the Strategic Marketing specialization, concepts, theories and hands-on experience combine to prepare you for a successful career in marketing management, new product marketing, brand management, services marketing, marketing research and modeling, as well as advertising and promotion.

Supply Chain Management

This specialization prepares you to think through and analyze complex problems encountered by managers in the planning and control of processes. You will have hands-on encounters with real-world operatihands-ons management projects and will be exposed to modern techniques used in logistics, inventory management, quality control and assur-ance, production planning and scheduling.

Requirements for the Canadian Operations Research Soci-ety (CORS) Diploma in Operational Research can be fulfilled with the appropriate academic standing and selection of courses. The courses in this specialization can also assist you in preparing for certification examinations conducted by the American Production Inventory Control Society (APICS).
