Dedicated Servers
What is a Cloud Server?
Cloud computing refers a cluster or large pool of multiple server-based computational resources which is available for access to the users. In cloud, user can access using various devices such as desktop, phone or other devices and use applications and store data in the remote cloud server. This avoids installing multiple applications in the local device. With such a large pool of computational resource, a cloud can run multiple OS using the same resources.
Silicon House Cloud is developed over Citrix Xen Server and is based on a minimum of 2.0 GHz processor. This consists of three components;
1. Xen Hyper visor
2. Domain 0, the privileged domain ( Dom0 ) - Privileged guest running on the hyper visor with direct hardware access and guest management responsibilities
3. Multiple DomainU, Unprivileged Domain Guests ( DomU ) - Unprivileged guests running on the hyper visor; they have no direct access to hardware.
The Xen hypervisor runs directly on the hardware and becomes the interface for all hardware
requests such as CPU, I/O, and disk for the guest operating systems.
The Domain 0 Guest referred to as Dom0 is launched by the Xen hypervisor during initial system
start-up and can run any operating system. The Dom0 has unique privileges to access the Xen hypervisor that is not allocated to any other Domain Guests.
The Domain Guests referred to as DomUs are launched and controlled by the Dom0 and
independently operate on the system. These guests are either run with a special modified operating system referred to as paravirtualizion or un-modified operating systems leveraging special
What is a Dedicated Server?
Any standard server which has an operating system installed and dedicatedly provided for a single client use is called a dedicated server. This is similar to any other hosting server but with all resources of the server can be used by a single client. Whereas in a shared server, the key resources such as memory, cpu, disk is being shared by many clients.
In a standard server there is a single operating system that interacts with hardware via device drivers.
Silicon House dedicated servers are fully tested for more than 170 man hours before deploying online and then pre-hardened. They also come as fully managed solutions which allow the client to concentrate on core activities than on managing the server.
Cloud Servers vs Dedicated Servers
Before starting the compare Cloud Servers and Dedicated Servers, it is logical to establish the parameters that have to be compared. These parameters must be such that it affects the performance of the application that runs on these devices directly.
Scalability: The ease with which key features such as Memory, CPU, Disk Space can be scaled. Compliance / Standards: This includes only security by design and not security of application that
runs over it.
Restorability: The ease with which backup, restore or snap shots can be restored. In worst case
scenario, a new server or instance similar to the present one can be replicated.
Performance: Performance of applications with respect to memory, cpu, disk space. Availability: Application availability by design and cost.
Cost: Cost that the end user has to pay.
FEATURE CLOUD SERVERS DEDICATED SERVERS
Scalability
Vertical Scaling: This refers to scalability of key computing resources, memory, disk space etc. Cloud instances run in a large pool of computational resources. Hence scaling of computing resources and other hardware features are almost instantaneous and might require a reboot alone. Horizontal Scaling: This refers to multiple instances of same configuration cloud instance available to handle large user base in various locations. Usually it is done using load balancing and clustering. Cloud instances can be templated and replicated easily.
Vertical Scaling: Dedicated servers run with pre-defined hardware specs. Hence to scale up you some time require a system shutdown [ unless you use something like a hot swap etc. ]. Almost all Scaling down requires a shutdown.
Horizontal Scaling: Templating requires installation, migration of data and other settings.
Compliance and Industry Standards
Most of the compliance requirements are based on isolation of data and archiving it securely. Apart from this, access control to the nodes etc. Cloud shares a common storage pool and
computational resource pool controlled by Dom0. This is a point of concern for many compliance requirements. However this can be mitigated to greater extent using Hybrid Solutions.
The hardware, software are fully dedicated and hence meets the highest compliance standards.
Restorability / Replication
To Restore from a backup or to create a snap shot of the same instance take less time. Multiple instances can be created for high availability within short duration without affecting the master.
OS and other software have to be re-installed and restored. Replication is time consuming due to installation and migration of programs and data.
Performance
Given the same hardware and other resources cloud servers will show performance lag due to I/O. Higher database usage sites will show a definite decline in performance.
Higher database usage and applications that are hardware intensive will perform better in dedicated servers.
Availability
Availability and replication is where cloud scores drastically over dedicated servers. Due to the very nature of resource pool available and quick snap shot based replication makes cloud a best solution for applications that require high availability
Single node failure will be disastrous for a dedicated server. Costlier options such as load balancing and clustering is required for higher availability
Cost
Flexible billing. Billing as per the usage, scaling up and down for shorter billing cycle and replication at low cost makes this option stable and cheaper
Higher hardware cost, uniform billing irrespective of resource usage, Scaling up or down is too costly.
