Vol. 2 No. 3

60 students are signed up for next year, 60

pairs of shoes have been ordered, Our new

categories: early development & parenting

classes plus University

Hola from Telchac Puerto, Yucatan, Mexico. The school year is coming to a close and we are working full steam ahead on the new school year that will begin in late August.

Once again we will be working with 60 students from grades 2 – 12. Our goal of having 75 students changed when we learned about the two schools needs, thought about the high school students

transportation needs and received applications from university students who must travel to Merida.

We have learned that public schools in Mexico basically receive no funding from the government so that means that the parents must pay for drinking water, toilet paper, cleaning supplies and all the things one associates with a classroom – industrial amount of paper, white board markers, erasers, books, classroom décor, etc.

We were appalled to hear this…especially about the toilet paper and cleaning supplies. We have a source that will be helping us with the supplies so the classrooms floors can be mopped daily and the bathrooms cleaned.

The Full Moon Jazz Festival was held on Saturday, February 19th at

Villas Wayak at km 25.5 on the Progreso – Telchac Puerto road, and was not only a financial success but also a fantastically nice evening for all who went. From last years event, Telchac Education received ALL the income for the ticket sales – a total of $38,000 pesos that sponsored 18 students.

This year, Telchac Education received $52, 000 pesos that will continue to sponsor the 18 students from last year (remember, we have a yearly commitment with the students) and take on another 7 for a total of 25 students that we call “the jazz students.”

The socially responsible Wayak group provided music from three jazz bands - Jazz Sensitive, the Martin Dib Latin Jazz Band from NYC and the Merida Big Band.

Once again, there was a dance floor on the beach for those who wanted to dance under the stars – and there were MANY who did!

T-Shirts

For the Full Moon Jazz Festival we had some commemorative t-shirts made. They have our Telchac Education logo on the front above the heart and the Full Moon Jazz logo on the back. They cost just $100 pesos. If you are interested in several, they are available via Susan. Contact her at [email protected]

Our New Flyer

Wish List

Teaching materials, laptops and amazon.com

have been added to our list!

Our wish list has grown to include the teachers. They always need “things” to decorate their classrooms plus any teaching aids available.

(4)

As always, crayons, white board markers, construction paper, coloring books, books in Spanish for grade school to high school level reading, flash cards, toothbrushes and paste, hair things (ribbons, elastic

bands, brushes, etc.)

If you are in the area this winter or next, you might want to consider going to the Jr. High school for some English classes. I hear the English teacher does a good job and is an enthusiastic teacher. I imagine if the students could listen to some native speakers that would be a great help to them.

Susan Stewart, our INCREDIBLE fund-raiser has been in touch with various people who have been donating new and previously owned laptops. As of this writing, nine laptops are waiting to be brought to Telchac Puerto. Many people have offered to be “mules” for getting the laptops to Telchac Puerto. IF you are coming down this way soon and can bring one, please let us know so that we can have it mailed to you. Yes…. muling laptops! THANK YOU!

As of right now, our plan with the laptops is to divide them between the secondary school and Hotel Libros & Sueños, which is also an internet café. The students will be able to check out the computers and use them at the hotel, free of charge. Thank you Mary for the use of your internet!

Amazon.com

If you go into your amazon.com page, look towards the top and see a link "Gifts & Wish Lists"

Click on that and enter telchaceducation.com and our wish list will pop up.

brand new – a work in process – but at least it is up and running. We still have information and pictures to give the webmaster so he can get them online. And, I must admit, I have been delinquent in getting info to him so that he can post it.

New & Revised Statements

As we have invented ourselves and grown over the past three years, we have seen a need to change our mission and vision. Our beliefs have remained the same.

Our Mission

Relieve the pressure caused buy constant poverty that denies

the students and teachers from receiving and providing an

education, by providing the tangible things they need: books,

uniforms, shoes, teaching materials and aids.

Our Vision

Reduce poverty through education. Promote education and

well being for the students and teachers in Telchac Puerto,

opportunity to learn.

Changing the life of just one child will have repercussions for

generations to come.

When you educate a girl or woman, you educate a family.

We are creating a lasting impact in the life of a child.

To stimulate the teachers is to provide them with the tolls they

need to reach their students.

Each child who has a sponsor will receive:

1) A brand-new backpack

2) ALL their school supplies – notebooks, pens, pencils,

erasers, colored pencils, pencil box, scissors, 100 sheets of

white bond paper, a calculator (scientific or basic), dictionary,

geometry set, liquid paper, glue sticks, USB stick (secondary

school), etc.

3) Three uniform blouses or shirts

4) Two pairs of uniform pants or two skirts

5) Gym uniform

6) A pair of black uniform school shoes

7) Three pairs of socks

8) A sweater/hoodie

How to become a sponsor

To become a sponsor is easy! Just send in your yearly

donation every April 15th and voila! That’s it! We do ask for

commitment on your part. When you sponsor a student, you

are taking that student on till they graduate for high school.

What it costs per year

Grade School 2nd – 6th grade $125 US

Jr, High 7th – 9th grade $175 US

Sr. High 10th – 12th grade $225

If you don’t want to commit to years in the program, you can

donate to our “slush fund,” which we use for different

purposes. This year we gave 8 students, who are not in the

program, one uniform each and 2 students their school suply

filled backpacks. Their poverty was so extreme, we just

couldn’t stand seeing them without clothes for school.
