Building Learning Through Communities, Through Critical Reflection

It is the responsibility of each student to read and understand this syllabus.

Catalog Description: Overview of the Sport Management Industry. Types of careers, training, experiences, courses of study, as well as characteristics of a successful manager are discussed. Also, a general introduction to the University of Dayton and departmental requirements and practices will be built-in.

Course Objectives: The student will obtain: Knowledge:

1. Awareness as to the nature of various careers within the sports industry. 2. Understanding of management processes.

3. Identification of trends, current events, and innovations within the sport and fitness world, and how they impact upon managerial decision processes.

4. Cultivation and understanding of sport sociology, psychology, and philosophy and their bearing upon sport and fitness management.

5. Knowledge of the different professional organizations, which govern various segments of the sport management field.

Comprehension:

1. Summarize basic managerial roles and styles. 2. Trace the sport/fitness marketing process. 3. Summarize the principles of managerial style 4. Compare sports organizations and careers.

5. Explain the important primary responsibilities of managers.

Application:

1. Apply research techniques to the assessments. 2. Complete a group project.

3. Participate with members of the class by creating a team approach. 4. Participate in class discussions concerning timely topics.

5. Discuss the management and aspects of the sports industry. Analysis:

1. Evaluate the different sports and fitness trends and the implication to sport management.

2. Differentiate between different theories on organizational behavior and employee motivation.

Synthesis:

1. Improve communication skills through written assignments, oral presentations, and class discussions.

2. Develop ability to work with others toward the accomplishment of common goals.

3. Foster creative and planning abilities. Evaluation:

1. Evaluate the various levels of sport management and their bearing upon your career. 2. Compare and contrast the different types of sport management industry.

3. Evaluate the notion that there is no best way to gain employment in sports. Attitudes and Values:

The University of Dayton’s mission statement articulates that the fundamental purpose of the institution includes more than just acquisition of discipline-specific knowledge and skills. The University of Dayton is a comprehensive Catholic university, and a diverse community committed, in the Marianist tradition, to educating the whole person and to linking learning and scholarship with leadership and service (Vision 2005: The

The mission of the School of Education and Allied Professions is grounded in the university’s mission. The mission of the SOEAP is to educate distinctive graduates who will effectively and efficiently utilize the highest quality of learning and scholarship and engage all students in building strong learning communities and in developing collaborative, caring partnerships.

The conceptual framework of the School of Education and Allied Professions (SOEAP) at the University of Dayton identifies four unit outcomes. Every student is expected to: a) embrace diversity for the promotion of social justice, b) develop as a scholarly

professional standards associated with the programs within the four departments that comprise the SOEAP.

Academic Excellence Defined:

Academic excellence is a continual campus-wide process in which students; faculty and staff are fully engaged as a community of learners fostered by academically challenging programs, intellectual and scholarly investigations and culturally and spiritually

Students are expected to attend and participate in class discussions and activities. Students who are excused from class meetings or activities are responsible for making arrangements with the professor to make up their work.

After 3 missed classes or 3 times coming late to class your grade will drop one letter grade and will keep dropping a letter grade with each recurrence. Academic Dishonesty Policy:

Academic integrity is a requirement for passing this course. Plagiarism, whether from print or electronic sources, is a serious violation of University regulations (see University Bulletin, p. 66).

Student Evaluation Criteria:

ASSIGNMENTS

REFLECTION PAPER: 2 page paper on a movie, tell if it relates to sports today and if so how? Next pick your favorite sport and tell me how it will be different 30 years from today.

HANDBOOK: You can't plan your education if you don't know the rules that you are being held accountable for by the Department of Health and Sport Science. You will take a quiz worth 50 points based on the handbook for the Department.

PRESSURE PACKET: This will allow the student to understand what the world of work will look like when they are no longer a college student. It will force the student to know the talk and learn about the industry in which they might want to work.

Assignment One –6 page paper on 5 jobs, explain how you decide on your top 2 jobs. Assignment Two –6 contacts, 3 contacts for the 2 jobs you chose, and 1 page summary on what you gained from the experience, note what you would do differently (note you can lose points if I see the word procrastination, have a follow plan for up contacts.

Total 1000 points

Bonus Points from Fundraiser 25 points

1. Everything MUST BE TYPED, failure to do so will result in a loss of 50% on assignments 2. Make-ups will not be given, and all materials

handed in late will be subject to a penalty of 50% of points for each overdue class assignment.

3. Exception to General Rule: In the case of documented illness or personal emergency.

Assignment Three –Need a job description of a job you would like to have in 10 years after being done with school. This is not part of the paper. Write a 5 page paper. Now in reverse chronological order tell me how you were qualified for this position. What classes will you take for you 5 Professional Competencies and how that will help you for the job you picked. Tell me as if you were asked in an interview, and start working backward all the way until end of this current term.

PRESSURE PACKET PRESENATION: All students will get to do a show and tell about where they are going and what they are going to do to get there.

RECREATION WORK EXPERENCE: During the semester students work at University of Dayton Recreation event is worth a total of 50 points.

SPEAKERS PRESENATIONS & QUIZ: During the semester we will have

professionals share information about the sport industry. We will have a quiz near the end of the term on what you learned this is worth a total of 50 points.

CHAPTER PRESENTATIONS: Groups of individuals will be responsible for preparing a PowerPoint and 30-minute presentation based on assigned chapters of the textbook. The presentations must NOT be a regurgitation of the information. The goal of the presentations is to help the class better understand the information through class involvement, rather than through lecture.

Student presenters will be in charge of motivating their peers to look at a career in their presented industry. Individuals will be graded on their own merits on the group

presentation. Presentations:

 All presentations must be done in Microsoft PowerPoint.

 Professional attire is expected.

 A question and answer section will be conducted after each presentation.

It is mandatory that the group meets with Doc T and their TA 10 days prior to the presentation to discuss the material and a presentation draft.

It is mandatory that the group practice with the TA, 3 days prior to the presentation in class.

PRESENTATION QUIZZES: There will be 3 tests during the semester, they will be True / False and multiple choice.

FUNDRAISER: ESPN the Magazine subscriptions and or other products total of $100 in sales.
