THE CHARTERED MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE (CMI)

The CMI is a leading professional body for managers, with the mission of promoting the development, exercise and recognition of professional management. It is incorporated by Royal Charter and is well known as the former British Institute of Management established in 1948. The CMI has been offering a post-graduate programme at the CUHK SCS for more than 10 years.

Currently, CMI has over 70,000 members coming from all sectors, both pubic and private, and all levels of responsibility, from supervisors to chief executives. It has an active branch with about 1,000 members in Hong Kong. As a Chartered body for management, its membership represents the highest recognition for professional managers.

PROGRAMME AIM

The CMI Diploma Programme in Business and Management (DBM) provides a comprehensive insight into the fundamentals of different management areas. It is most suitable for students who are already working in a junior executive position and preparing for advancement to middle position in an organisation. The award is pitched at the UK’s NQF¹ Level 5, equivalent to an Advanced Diploma in Hong Kong (HK’s QF² Level 4).

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The Programme consists of 150 contact hours taking around 12 months to complete on a part- time basis. It is made up of 6 courses and a project, i.e. totally 7 courses:

1. Business Environment 2. Introduction to Management 3. Human Resources and Leadership 4. Finance and Resources Management

5. Marketing Management 6. Business Planning 7. Project

Students are required to have a good standard of English. Please see ‘ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS’ for details.

ASSESSMENT AND AWARDS

At the end of each course, students are required to submit an assignment and pass an open- book examination. Upon completing all the six courses, students will be required to submit a project (2500 to 3000 words) on a topic relevant to their work. Passing of all 7 courses and at least 70% attendance in each course will lead to the DBM award by the CMI.

A “Certificate of Completion” (issued by the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, CUHK) will also be granted to students who meet the above requirements.*

¹ UK’s NQF is National Qualification Framework, UK

² HK’s QF is Qualification Framework, Hong Kong

Full members of CMI may participate in a Chartered Manager programme and seek to qualify for an additional designation as a Chartered Manager (see CMI website: www.managers.org.uk).

(2) DBM also offers advanced standing status for students to complete Bachelor degree programmes of many universities in their home campus or in Hong Kong, such as De Montfort University, the University of Wales and Middlesex University. The top-up programmes may be completed in about two years by part-time studies.
