1 Uninstallation
To update to Generation 12, the existing G Data ManagementServer must first be uninstalled. The G Data Security Agent is automatically upgraded from the ManagementServer and does not have to be uninstalled.
Note: The new ManagementServer requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 which is not available for Windows 2000 Workstation or Server.
The G Data Security Client does not support Windows 2000 systems. System Requirements:
MS Windows 8/7/Vista/XP SP2 (32 Bit only)/Server 2003/2008/2012
1GB RAM
MS Windows is not supported.
MS Windows 98/ME is not supported.
1.1 Database Information
The existing SQL database structure is converted during the installation to the new SQL 2008 format. The integrated database that was used through version 10.7 is no longer supported with version 12. It will be converted during the installation of the ManagementServer version 12 to an SQL Express database.
Databases that were used with versions through version 9.0 cannot be migrated.
In these cases, the ManagementServers will have to be reconfigured.
1.2 Uninstalling the G Data ManagementServer
Select Uninstall a program in the Control Panel. Select the entry G DATA AntiVirus ManagementServer and click on the Uninstall button.
Follow the uninstallation instructions. A window opens querying if the database with the client settings and reports should be deleted.
If the current G Data DVD or the setup file is not available, then contact G Data support or your G Data Security Reseller Partner.
2.1 Installing the G Data ManagementServer
Insert the current G Data DVD into your DVD drive (or double click on the Select.exe file) and then click on Install. Select the component G Data ManagementServer by clicking the corresponding button.
Close all other running applications, otherwise problems could occur during installation. Read and agree to the License agreement for the use of the software and by selecting Accept the terms in the license agreement and click on Next. The next screen allows the choice of the installation folder.
2.2 Selection of the Type of Server
There are various options when selecting the type of server. As this is a new installation, the type of installation of the G Data ManagementServer is a Main Server (Main-MMS). The Main Server is the central configuration and administration instance of the network-based end point protection architecture.
2.3 Database selection
Select a database that the G Data ManagementServer will use. It is possible to use an existing SQL Server instance (at least Microsoft SQL 2005) or, if there is no Integrated database or SQL Server already present on the network, Microsoft SQL Express 2008 can be installed locally.
a) If you would like to install Microsoft SQL Express 2008, select the first option. This will create an empty database for the ManagementServer (standard for a new installation).
How to proceed with Microsoft SQL 2008 in connection with an existing SQL 2005 database can be found in section 2.4 Database Migration.
b) If an existing SQL 2005 database is to be used with Microsoft SQL Express 2005, select the option Use available SQL server instances.
On completion of the installation, the file GdmmsConfig.exe will open automatically. Select the existing SQL server and select Read database list. After selecting the
corresponding ManagementServer database, select Update database and then close the window.
c) If an integrated database was previously used, this will be automatically detected and its import will be suggested. To make sure that it will be imported, check the box Import database.
(x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL 10.GDATASQLSVR2K8\MSSQL\DATA
d) Rename both files to the file names of the existing mdf- and ldf files that are already contained in that folder. The previously existing files can be renamed or deleted.
e) Start the SQL service.
f) Start the file GdmmsConfig.exe contained in the installation folder of the G Data ManagementServer.
g) Select the corresponding SQL server as well as the database and click on the button Update database. The existing SQL database will now be converted to the new SQL 2008 format.
2.5 Product Activation
During installation the product can be activated. Activation makes it possible to download updates after installation has completed.
If the G Data software had already been activated at an earlier date, then the Access Data (username & password) will already have been generated and displayed (you were instructed to write down and safeguard this information at the completion of the original, successful software registration). If the G Data software is being reinstalled, then enter this Access Data or select Activate later, if the access data is not currently available. If the product is not activated, then the software cannot download any updates from the Internet and optimal protection against malware cannot be guaranteed. The Access Data can be entered when an update is performed.
Note: If the software is installed without activation, then only components for G Data AntiVirus will be available even if G Data ClientSecurity or G Data EndpointProtection have been purchased. The additional components will be activated and available as soon as the software is registered/ activated.
2.6 Updating the G Data Security Client
A new installation of the G Data Security Client is NOT required.
If the option Update program files automatically is activated (Client settings – General Updates – Update program files automatically), the update of the client program files will be performed automatically.
If this option is deactivated, the client can be manually updated by right-clicking the client in the section Clients and then selecting Update program files now. After successfully distributing the client updates, a reboot of the client PC may be required.
