Introduction

The author of this letter reminds his audience that originally, they were not part of God’s chosen people. Through Jesus’ death, however, they are included in God’s household of faith, whose cornerstone is Jesus Christ.

Confession and Forgiveness

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

Blessed be the holy Trinity,☩ one God, the God of manna,

the God of miracles, the God of mercy.

Amen.

Drawn to Christ and seeking God’s abundance, let us confess our sin.

Silence is kept for reflection.

God, our provider,

help us.

It is hard to believe there is enough to share.

We question your ways when they differ from the ways of the world in which we live.

We turn to our own understanding rather than trusting in you.

We take offense at your teachings and your ways. Turn us again to you.

Where else can we turn?

Share with us the words of eternal life and feed us for life in the world. Amen.

Beloved people of God:

in Jesus, the manna from heaven, you are fed and nourished. By Jesus, the worker of miracles, there is always more than enough. Through Jesus, ☩ the bread of life, you are shown God’s mercy:

you are forgiven and loved into abundant life.

GREETING

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

Let us welcome one another in the name of Christ!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.

O God, powerful and compassionate, you shepherd your people, faithfully feeding and protecting us. Heal each of us, and make us a whole people, that we may embody the justice and peace of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

…to hear the WORD…

Ephesians 1:3-14

(Text from The Message Bible)

A reading from Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus.

3-6 How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He’s the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ,

and takes us to the high places of blessing in him. Long before he laid down earth’s

foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.

7-10 Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah, his blood poured out on the altar of the Cross,

we’re a free people—free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds. And not just barely free, either. Abundantly free! He thought of everything, provided for

everything we could possibly need, letting us in on the plans he took such delight in making. He set it all out before us in Christ, a long-range plan in which everything would be brought together and summed up in him, everything in deepest heaven, everything on planet earth.

11-12 It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first

heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.

13-14 It’s in Christ that you, once you heard the truth and believed it (this Message of your

salvation), found yourselves home free—signed, sealed, and delivered by the Holy Spirit. This down payment from God is the first installment on what’s coming, a reminder that we’ll get everything God has planned for us, a praising and glorious life

The word of the Lord.

Ephesians 2:11-22

(Text from The Message Bible)

A reading from Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus.

11-13 But don’t take any of this for granted. It was only yesterday that you outsiders to God’s

ways had no idea of any of this, didn’t know the first thing about the way God works, hadn’t the faintest idea of Christ. You knew nothing of that rich history of God’s covenants and promises in Israel, hadn’t a clue about what God was doing in the world at large. Now because of Christ—dying that death, shedding that blood—you who were once out of it altogether are in on everything.

14-15 The Messiah has made things up between us so that we’re now together on this, both

non-Jewish outsiders and Jewish insiders. He tore down the wall we used to keep each other at a distance. He repealed the law code that had become so clogged with fine print and footnotes that it hindered more than it helped. Then he started over. Instead of continuing with two groups of people separated by centuries of animosity and suspicion, he created a new kind of human being, a fresh start for everybody.

16-18 Christ brought us together through his death on the cross. The Cross got us to embrace,

and that was the end of the hostility. Christ came and preached peace to you outsiders and peace to us insiders. He treated us as equals, and so made us equals. Through him we both share the same Spirit and have equal access to the Father.

19-22 That’s plain enough, isn’t it? You’re no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is

irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now he’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together. We see it taking shape day after day—a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is quite at home.

The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Let us come before the triune God in prayer.

When you hear…

Lord, in your mercy,

Respond with…

Hear our prayer.

We lift our prayers to you, O God, trusting in your abiding grace. Amen.

…and share the MEAL that we call

HOLY COMMUNION

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Christ has set the table with more than enough for all. Come!

Please take the sealed communion packet you received upon entering the Park and following the instructions of the Presiding Minister.

DIALOGUE

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

PEACE

The peace of Christ be with you always.

And also with you.

OFFERING PRAYER

Jesus, Bread of life,

you have set this table with your very self, and called us to the feast of plenty. Gather what has been sown among us, and strengthen us in this meal.

Make us to be what we receive here, your body for the life of the world.

Amen.

So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go;

(11)

11

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

PREFACE

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places

give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ;

who on this day overcame death and the grave,

and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels,

with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

Holy, holy, holy are you, God of power and might; Heaven and earth are filled with your glory. Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is the One who comes in your name. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest!

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

The body of Christ, given for you.

The body of Christ, given for you.

In the same way after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people

for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this, as often as you come together, in remembrance of me.

(12)

12

The blood of Christ, shed for you.

For every time we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim the saving death of the risen Lord, until he comes.

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

COMMUNION SONG

Lamb of God,

You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God,

You take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God,

You take away the sins of the world,

grant us peace.

The next day [John] saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

(John 1:29)

(13)

13

The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in God’s grace.

Amen.

COMMUNION PRAYER

Jesus, Bread of life,

we have received from your table more than we could ever ask.

As you have nourished us in this meal,

now strengthen us to love the world with your own life. In your name we pray.

Amen.

…to be SENT out into the world making disciples by sharing his

message of mercy and love.

BLESSING

The blessing of God,

who provides for us, feeds us, and journeys with us, ☩ be upon you now and forever.

DISMISSAL PRAYER

“Prayer of Good Courage”

Lord God,

you have called your servants

to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown.

Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Go in peace. Share the good news.

Thanks be to God.

As you go, proclaim the good news, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Matthew 10:7)
