Rationale for Changes: New ES emphasis provides a greater breadth of exercise programming more practical/applied experiences to better

prepare students for Kinesiology-related job opportunities; provides abundant curriculum choices for different professional options (including Health Promotion, Fitness Management, Personal Trainer, Sports Management, & Sport Performance); and provides more freedom of class choices within the major regarding the Exercise Science Electives, and greater choice of selection to either Minor or choose a

Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences: Rehabilitation Science Emphasis Overview

Summary of Proposed Rehabilitation Science Program: In the proposed curricular revision, the Human Performance

emphasis-Pre-professional option will be created into a new program, Rehabilitation Science. The emphasis will include (a) the

Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences core (12 credits), (b) the Rehabilitation Science professional development sequence (26

credits), and (c) elective credits that will serve as pre-requisite courses for graduate school admission (22 credits). All proposed

curricular changes and associated course proposal or revisions are intended to prepare students for graduate study in the areas of

cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic medicine, therapeutic recreation, and rehabilitation

sciences or medical school and physician assistant programs. In addition, this emphasis will also prepare students to work in

medical-based fitness centers, cardiac rehabilitation programs, gerontology/senior fitness programs, and community centers

involving physical activity programs for individuals with disabilities or special needs.

In addition to the curricular modifications, we are proposing a formal application process for program admittance. Enrollment

growth in the pre-professional areas in our department necessitates such a process. Student applications for the program will be

reviewed following each fall and spring semester. Up to 25 students may be admitted into the program each semester. At the time

of application, each student must: a) submit a completed program application form, b) be enrolled in or have completed KINS

304, 308, and 320, and c) submit a cover letter and resume highlighting qualifications related to Rehabilitation Science. Student

admission will be based on the following criteria: a) total GPA – 40%, b) overall performance in KINS 304, 308, and 320 – 36%,

and c) evaluation of student cover letter, resume, and application self-reflective essays – 24%.

It will be difficult to effectively control for enrollment and ensure timely advancement through the curriculum if students from all programs are competing for seats in these courses. Professional Certifications: (a) Students completing KINS 358 would be prepared to sit for ACSM-HFS and CPT exams, NASM-CPT and CES exams; b) Students completing KINS 464/466 would be prepared to sit for the ACSM-CES exam.
