Easter Stories Revisited
a series on the power of sharing what God has done in our lives
Part 1: Easter Sunday: The Stories Begin... Again!
Happy Easter! Welcome to St. Raphael, especially if you are visiting or new to our church. We ’re so glad you came to celebrate Easter Sunday with us! This article will be the "irst of a series that I ’ll do for each week of the 50 days of the Easter Season this year. You can "ind the bulletin each week at
www.saintraphael.org.
Stories. That ’s what we dive into in the Scriptures in Easter time. Amazing stories of people who
witnessed the shocking, life-changing, world-shaking, joy-infusing reality of Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead. We hear stories about Mary Magdalene, Peter and John, the disciples going to Emmaus, the disciples out "ishing, Thomas, whole big groups of disciples... We hear their stories of how they
encountered the risen Jesus – often when they least expected it, or most needed it, or both – and how their lives were changed forever because of that encounter and the relationship with him that followed.
Later in the Scriptures, especially in the Acts of the Apostles, we hear even more stories. Of people who encountered the risen Jesus after his Ascension, in various ways, and also the power of the Holy Spirit he had promised to send. The most famous of these stories is from Paul – who encountered the risen Jesus even as he was persecuting Jesus ’ disciples. For Paul too: shocking, life-changing, world-shaking, joy- infusing...
Those encounters continue today. The Easter stories in Scripture are just the beginning of the Easter stories that Christians have told down the millennia and still tell today: of how they have
encountered the risen Jesus, and had their lives changed forever. In the weeks that follow we ’ll hear some of those stories.
Last year during Eastertime I shared these same stories. This year I’m sharing them again with a new
“reveal.” What I didn’t say before is that each of the people in these stories found a deeper connection with Jesus and others through Alpha. Alpha is an evening with a good meal, a presentation on a big
question about life and faith, and a time for good conversation. And as of this year, Alpha is now offered at St. Raphael! You can "ind more info on Alpha in this bulletin: registration for our next Alpha
experience opens April 29 at www.saintraphael.org and the "irst session is June 5. If you have questions about life and faith, I think you might really enjoy Alpha and I hope to see you there!
Happy Easter!

Our Easter Joy
Happy Easter! I'd like to share this re"lection by Trish Sullivan Vanni on the reappearance of "Alleluia" at Easter. One of my favorite memories when my daughter was a toddler was that she somehow got in the habit of singing an Alleluia every time we drove past a church. Passing our faith along does not have to be complicated, but it does require authenticity and joy! - JR
“Alleluia, he is risen, Alleluia! Alleluia!”
My parish community is blessed to have a fabulous music ministry. One of the highlights of our Easter Vigil is the moment the cantor and choir sing the “Alleluia” before the proclamation of the Gospel. The lights of the sanctuary are brightened, and our song is full, energized, and glorious. With the angels in heaven, we stand at God ’s throne and give thanks and praise: “Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!”
During the season of Lent, we have fasted from this powerful word. The Church removes “alleluia” from our liturgies to remind us that we must be on a constant journey of transformation if we are to truly praise God and live in his Kingdom. Lent has reminded us that the Kingdom of God is, as theologians say, “already and not yet.” It is already here, because Jesus Christ lived, taught, suffered, died, rose, and sent us his Spirit, establishing the Kingdom on earth.
It is not yet because the world remains caught in webs of sin and deceit, and there are still places that
have not heard the Good News. When we fast from singing with the angels in Lent, we remember our sinfulness, repent, and resolve to carry his message more fully. By letting go of this word, we hear it in fresh, new ways as we celebrate Christ ’s Resurrection and rededicate ourselves as “alleluia” people.
One of the wonderful practices of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is that of “burying the alleluia.” The children in this faith formation program write the word “alleluia” and decorate it. They then place their artwork in a box, which is either literally buried in the ground or symbolically buried in a closet or another out-of-sight location. At Easter, the tomb is opened, and the “alleluia” is sung once again. This is a wonderful practice for families as well.
In this season, we can sing “alleluia” for our table grace. Consider using the setting from Mass to tie the faith and fellowship of our family dinner table to that of our parish community. When we ’re in the Sunday assembly, we can be the people who sing with the enthusiasm, con"idence, and gusto this prayer deserves.
And always, let us re"lect not only on how we can put the “alleluia” on our lips but in our lives.

Moments Of Mercy
Moments of Mercy: Easter Recalls Our Love Story
The !irst encounter with the Risen Jesus was a personal one. As Mary is confused and saddened in the garden, Jesus jolts her out of her
disappointment by calling her name. In a general audience on May 17, 2017, Pope Francis re!lected upon how nice it is “to think that there is someone who knows us, who sees our suffering and disappointment, who is moved with us and calls us by name. ” Francis explained that while many people search for God, the entire Gospel points us to the amazing fact that
“long before that, in the !irst place there is God, who is concerned about our life, who wants to raise it, and to do this, He calls us by name, recognizing the individual face of each person.
“Each person is a love story that God writes on this earth. Each one of us is God’s love story. He calls each of us by our name: he knows us by name; he looks at us; he waits for us; he forgives us; he is patient with us. Is this true or not true? Each of us experiences this.
“And Jesus calls her: ‘Mary!’: the revolution of her life, the revolution destined to transform the life of every man and every woman begins with a name which echoes in the garden of the empty sepulchre. The Gospels describe Mary ’s happiness. Jesus ’ Resurrection is not a joy which is measured with a dropper, but a waterfall that cascades over life.
Christian life is not woven of soft joys, but of waves which engulf everything. You too, try to imagine, right now, with the baggage of disappointments and failures that each of us carries in our heart, that there is a God close to us who calls us by name and says to us: ‘Rise, stop weeping, for I have come to free you!’ This is beautiful.
“Jesus is not one who adapts to the world, tolerating in it the persistence of death, sadness, hatred, the moral destruction of people.... Our God is not inert, but our God — allow me to say — is a dreamer: he dreams of the transformation of the world, and accomplished it in the mystery of the Resurrection.
“Mary would like to embrace her Lord, but he is already oriented towards the heavenly Father, whereas she is sent to carry the news to the brethren. And so that woman, who, before encountering Jesus, had been at the mercy of evil (cf. Lk 8:2) now becomes the Apostle of the new and greatest hope.
“May her intercession also help us live this experience: in times of woe and in times of abandonment, to listen to the Risen Jesus who calls us by name and, with a heart full of joy, to go forth and proclaim: ‘I have seen the Lord!’ (v. 18).
I have changed my life because I have seen the Lord! I am now different than before. I am another person. I have changed because I have seen the Lord. This is our strength and this is our hope. ”
COME HOLY SPIRIT!
