JEAN NOUVEL
DESIGNED BY A
MODERN DAY MAVERICK
J
ean Nouvel, one of the most important architects of his generation, has built his career on defying convention. Since he first shot to fame with his iconic design for the Arab World Institute (Institut du Monde Arabe), one of the first of a series of the “grands projets” commissioned by François Mitterrand to adorn France’s capital, landmark Nouvel buildings have come to grace the skylines of most major world destinations.Setting a trend for his innovative approach to building design, the Arab World Institute features rows of photovoltaic cells, distributed in sequential geometric patterns, echoing a key element of traditional Islamic architecture, whilst serving the practical purpose of regulating the amount of light and heat entering the building.
This spirit of iconoclasm coupled with practicality has carried on through thirty very productive years, resulting in “starchitecture” such as the Torre Agbar in Barcelona, the Copenhagen Concert Hall, and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, and earning Nouvel the Pritzker prize in 2008 – the highest award that the architectural world can bestow.
Nouvel brings this spirit to Ibiza in the Las Boas/Patio Blanco residential development. With it he brings together the contradictions of Ibiza’s unique history: the modern Ibiza of sensual, hedonistic excess, combined with forms taken from traditional Ibizan and Mediterranean living. These elements are combined to create unique, flexible spaces, intimate yet sociable, private yet open, an architecture of and for the island that reflects its heritage, ancient and modern, like nowhere else.

N
ouvel’s partner for this project is Ribas & Ribas, perhaps thearchitectural practice that has done most to redefine the architecture of Mediterranean Spain over the last half century. An architectural business that has been passed down through three generations, it’s also a creative hot shop that remains at the top of its game by constantly reinventing itself. From the very start Ribas & Ribas have been involved with projects involving Ibiza as well as their home city, Barcelona. Their work in Barcelona has done much to redefine the shape of that city, helping to create what is universally considered as one of the most vibrant, exciting and liveable cities in the world. They have used this expertise in Ibiza to design some of its most graceful and stylish accommodation.
Ribas & Ribas also have a long history of partnership with Jean Nouvel, having collaborated with him for fifteen years. Nouvel always partners with their practice when working in Spain, thanks to this long-standing partnership and the resulting sense of being “en famille” when working together.
Like Nouvel, they see the development as a bringing-together of opposite parts, parts which are complementary, not contradictory: privacy and openness; luxury and minimalism; tradition and modernity; wild, hedonistic excess and calm, solemn peace.

t is designed as a microcosm of Ibiza itself, in all its charming, delightful contradictions. The name comes from that ultimate symbol of the party lifestyle for which the island is famous – the feather boa. Its sensuous, curving form inspires the shape of the terraces, hinting at hedonism and decadence. Looking more closely, the form of these twists is actually made up of flowering plants – plants with many different colours of blossom, every one native to the island of Ibiza. In total, a thousand species of native plant have been used in the gardens, which make an integral part of the structure. In true Jean Nouvel form, the building defies label or description. Each apartment is individually tailored and designed. Whether you want a lot of space to spread out, or a more intimate party pied-à-terre, there is an apartment for you. No two are the same. Each one has not only been crafted by the architect himself, they have been personalised by a team of extraordinary individuals: Alain Bony for the wall painting, lighting artist Yann Kersale and foremost botanist Patrick Blanc have also combined to deliver a unique experience on every level of each apartment. This means that whatever apartment you choose is like no other, and with views to match: some of Formentera, some of Ibiza Old Town, and some looking onto the exclusive Marina Ibiza. Each apartment is a powerful statement of your own individuality and needs. The space has been designed to be supremely flexible, allowing the terrace to be completely open to the living room, and all the bedrooms to be opened up – or closed off – as you desire. And with an enormous pool inspired by the many coves which crowd the coasts of the island, and a 24-hour concierge service and an unmatched location between two of the island’s most famous clubs, Pacha and Lio, this is a place that embodies true luxury, where all your dreams can come true.

atio Blanco is a unique space. Although based on similar inspirations as its flamboyant sister Las Boas, it presents itself in a different way. The outside is reminiscent of a traditional Ibizan house, brilliant white interspersed with occasional windows, the customary protection against the bright Mediterranean sun that beams down almost every day of the year. A simple exterior that gives no clue about the vibrant life inside. Just walk in, and you are transported to a different universe altogether. The entrance lies beneath a dazzling wall of foliage, a vertical garden of glorious bougainvillea and jasmine tumbling down the entire height of the building. Once inside, you’re in a special, private world. The inner courtyard echoes a traditional Andalusian patio, an intimate space filled with water. It’s also inspired by the sunkissed opulence of Miami, giving the space an exciting, urban feel. An atmosphere which is enhanced at night when the intertwining lattice of pools that forms the inner courtyard are filled with coloured light, giving the whole space a unique energy.Again, the spaces are designed to be as flexible as you want them to be. Brushed-aluminium shutters can be closed to give your balcony privacy from the inner courtyard, or opened if you want to see and be seen. The interiors are designed to be flexible and can be changed to suit your needs: an open-plan, flowing space that invites interaction, or closed to define different rooms and give you separate areas as required.
The location is again optimal: positioned close to the exclusive Marina Ibiza, where many of Ibiza’s most illustrious summer residents choose to moor their boats, and equidistant between Pacha and Lio, two of the hottest clubs on the island – or indeed in the world. The building is a short stroll from both the hedonistic decadence of the Old Town and the gorgeous sandy beach of Talamanca around the headland. It makes for an ideal spot to enjoy the quiet and the craziness, the traditional and the modern, all the glorious contradictions that make the island unique, and one of the most sought-after destinations in the world.

he island has seen many changes in recent history, from the casual bohemian hippyness of the Sixties and Seventies, the wild party desinhibition of the Eighties to the ecstatic house explosion of the Nineties and Noughties. This is a place that defies categories, a place that mixes tradition and modernity to create a heady, intoxicating, hedonistic cocktail that’s like nowhere else. Ibiza has come of age as an exclusive luxury destination where top creatives, musicians and artists from all over the world mingle with the international jet set to party – and relax – with like-minded individuals, all drawn there by its unique, incomparable energy and spirit. This “new” Ibiza is a bit of a secret still, but one that is increasingly spilled across the pages of the most stylish and directional magazines, newspapers and websites all over the world, from Sydney to Seattle, from Dubai to Durban.EVERYTHING YOU
COULD IMAGINE

IBIZA IS AN ISLAND WHOSE FAME GOES FAR BEYOND
ITS SHORES, AN ISLAND THAT IS THE SOURCE OF MYTH
BOTH ANCIENT AND MODERN. BUT MOST OF ALL IT’S
A PLACE THAT HAS TAKEN THIS MYTH-MAKING IN ITS
STRIDE, SOMEWHERE THAT’S BECOME ONE OF THE MOST
SOPHISTICATED, DECADENT, LUXURIOUS, UNINHIBITED
SUMMER DESTINATIONS THE WORLD HAS TO OFFER.
IBIZA
And once you’re in on the secret, it’s easy to see why. The hedonistic heritage of fifty years of no-limits anything-goes is combined with a stunning – and surprisingly still mostly untouched – natural landscape, with wild corners, pine forests, isolated coves, rocky headlands and unspoilt, whitewashed villages. Some of the further-flung of them retain their sleepy, lazy air even in the height of summer; and a number of them, such as Sant Joan, still have a hippy market, started by the island’s first foreign visitors in the Sixties, and still going strong. The island’s geology means that the island’s shores are crowded with stunning beaches, from broad sandy stretches in the south to wild, rocky coves to the north- west, some only accessible by boat, or by a long trek from the nearest parking spot. This means that even at the busiest time of year you can still find a quiet spot for sea-bathing or picnicking.
Add to this an incredible climate where the sun shines nearly every day of the year, with burnished blue skies and the brilliant light that somehow you only get in the Mediterranean, and balmy, star-studded summer nights that seem to be filled with decadent sensuality, it’s easy to see why those who “discover” the island are drawn to it year after year.
The choice of location for Las Boas and Patio Blanco was no accident. The site was selected in order to give the residents the best place on the island to take advantage of everything it has to offer. For example, its location between Pacha and Lio, two of the most important clubs on the island. Pacha, now a global brand, was where it all began in the Sixties, now one of the must-

see (and must-be-seen) nightspots on the island. Lio is the happening young upstart, perfectly situated in the middle of the Old Town bay overlooking Dalt Vila on one side and Las Boas on the other.
A twenty-minute stroll or short car journey from your apartment takes you to Dalt Vila itself, Ibiza’s port and old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is packed with bars, shops and restaurants. During the summer, the cobbled streets are packed with parades in which the hottest bars and clubs try to outdo each other with displays of craziness: the wilder, the more beautiful, the more hedonistic the better, all in order to attract the hippest and the prettiest to the island’s most exclusive nightspots and dancefloors. They are a sight unique to the island and definitely not to be missed.
The wilder, more untamed side to the island is not far away, either. Just head north round the broad sweep of Talamanca bay and follow the signposts to s’Estanyol, an idyllic sandy cove in what is one of Ibiza’s most isolated bays, just a short drive away.
Many of the island’s frequent summer visitors have bought property on the island: opulent, hidden villas tucked away down dirt tracks, where some of the best parties happen in summer, hidden away from view. But everyone gets together for the uninhibited wild abandon of the island’s discotecas, where outrageous floor shows, unrestricted hedonism and unrestrained sensuality are the norm.
There’s something for everyone pretty much every night during the season, and the opening parties (towards the end of May) and the closing parties (end September) attract throngs of people in the know for some of the most decadent parties on the planet.
The island has a spirit like nowhere else. A spirit first recognised by the Phoenicians, who gave the island its name. They called it Iboshim, the place of their deity Bes, god of dance and all the good things in life. Legend has it that they gave it this name because when they arrived, they noted the fact that there was no dangerous or venomous animal or plant on the island, and decided that it must be Bes’ home, as nothing bad could happen here.
In the Sixties, the then-growing counterculture rediscovered this spirit with a free-and-easy lifestyle and relaxed atmosphere in an outstandingly beautiful landscape. By the end of the decade the island was firmly on the hippy trail, with musicians such as Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan summering here.
This bohemian attitude continued into the Seventies and Eighties, and by the Nineties it had given birth to the Balearic Beat, a fusion of funk and house that inspired a whole global youth culture. In the last decade this has grown up, transforming into a unique mix of past and present, wild and tame, hedonistic and luxurious, that keeps those in the know visiting again and again.
