2. SOLVING CRIME WITH FORENSIC SCIENCE

IN TODAY'S WORLD

October 26, 28, November 2, 4 (Tuesdays/Thursdays)

9:30-11:30 am

Forensic science techniques are increasingly relied on to identify, apprehend and convict criminals. Yet, do all techniques produce credible results? What standards do judges employ to determine the admissibility of results from such techniques? What controversies have emerged in the use of forensic science methods? These and related questions will be addressed in this four- part series.

The Social Realities of Criminal

Justice in America

November

11

Learn of criminal justice policies and legislation that have had a disparate impact on marginalized persons and communities in America (e.g., mandatory minimum sentences, police violence, mass incarceration, wrongful convictions). Craig will address the multiplicative effects of race, gender and class on criminal justice outcomes as well as concepts and theories, such as

intersectionality and social disorganization, which can help in explaining such disparities affecting people of color and indigent citizens.

Miltonette Olivia Craig, Assistant Professor, Department of Criminal Justice and

Criminology, Sam Houston State University

The End of Money Bond: Criminal

Justice Reform in Illinois

November 16

In February 2021, Illinois passed the Pretrial Fairness Act, a sweeping set of reforms intended to curb the overuse of jails and end the use of money Bond. When the law goes into effect in 2023, poverty will no longer be a reason that people remain in jail. Staudt, a key advocate for the legislation, will explain what changes our courts will see, why they were made, and how they will make our courts fairer and our communities safer.

Sarah Staudt, Senior Policy Analyst, Chicago Appleseed Center for Fair Courts

American Exceptionalism: Differences

in our American Legal System from

Other Western Countries

November 18

What is the difference between the “common-law” U.S. system and the more rigidly applied “civil law” of other countries? How does the American prison system differ from those of other developed nations? What is the goal of criminal justice? Learn how judicial discretion has shaped U.S. and international law.

Bryan McIntyre, Assistant Appellate Defender, Office of the State Appellate Defender

A HISTORY OF SECRET WRITING

November 5

What secrets were so scandalous, so dangerous, that they could only be communicated in ciphers and codes? Learn about the history of secret writing during the early modern period when soldiers, politicians and lovers learned cryptology in order to exchange private thoughts, warn one another of threats and conspired to assassinate kings and queens. Looking closely at real ciphers, Ellison will also discuss the early 20th century, when study of those early modern secrets influenced the establishment of the first intelligence agencies.

Katherine Ellison, Director of Graduate Studies, Professor of Literature & Culture, Department of English, ISU
