About Us

1 We are committed to quality

and reliability

The original and current owner of Tomrods,

John Thompson is still involved with the

business ably assisted by his wife Julie who

joined the company in 1982. It has been a

long journey and we have survived many

recessions especially in 2008. Through

hard work and dedication Tomrods has

developed into one of the best steel

stockholding companies in the UK.

We are very proud of what we have

achieved, our warehousing and processing

facilities are second to none, creating an

excellent work ethic amongst our staff.

Tomrods is a great place to work! The past

is important to us but the future is more

so and we will continue to build a strong

balance sheet and invest in our future.

Tomrods started steel trading in October 1973

with just 2 members of staff. The ﬁ rst years

were difﬁ cult but by 1976 we were able to start

steel stockholding in a 5000 sq ft warehouse in

Harrogate.

The steel strike of 1979/80 was a good time for

steel stockholders and we reinvested the proﬁ ts

into a purpose built warehouse on Manse Lane in

Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. In the early eighties

another warehouse was added and another in

November 1990. At this time we purchased our ﬁ rst

shotblaster and heavy duty saws and employed 38

members of staff. Tomrods continued to grow and in

2010 we moved to our current location in Thirsk. We

are situated on an 8.5 acre site with 95,000 square

feet of covered warehousing and currently employ in

excess of 50 members of staff.

4 Tomrods programming team are able to

work directly from customer NC/ DSTV ﬁ les

or alternatively we are happy to draw up

parts for approval. All parts are meticulously

checked both prior to and after production

to ensure a high level of quality is provided

to customers.

Our highly accurate steel drilling improves

speed and lead times. This allows

customers to increase their own capacity at

short notice and without the need for large

investment.

Tomrods are accredited steel processors to

CE Marking Execution Class 4.

Our 2 Vernet Behringer HDX Saw, Drilling, Milling

machines offer the very latest in drilling and milling

technologies, and are capable of processing materials

from 50mm to 18,500mm long, 920mm wide and

510mm high.

In addition to traditional drilling, Tomrods provide

customers with advanced options for:

• Notching (coping)

• Milled circular, rectangular and square shapes

• Slotted holes

• Tapping of holes to take threaded bolts

• Weld preparations

• Tee and haunch splitting

• Scribing for ﬁ tting positions (on three axis)

5 Choosing Tomrods to cut your steel

will improve lead times on items and

simplify your supply chain.

Tomrods provide the highest levels

of quality and service for bundle and

individual piece cutting, coupled with

on time deliveries.

We have invested heavily in our steel cutting facilities

and now have 6 mitre band saws capable of cutting

up to 1016mm wide and 18300mm in length with

automatic measuring and cutting capabilities. Our

skilled steel operatives can efﬁ ciently & accurately

cut steel to customer and CE Marking requirements

for both bundle cutting and bespoke one off pieces.

Tomrods is a CE Approved Processing Centre to

Execution Class 4 (EXC4) BS EN 1090-1:2009 + A1:2011.

7 Shot-blasted steel is then fed into the

steel painting preservation line where four

automated spray guns are used for paint

spraying and sensors are used to eliminate

spraying from one or both ﬂ anges of a

beam if required. The steel is ﬁ nished with a

primer coat of approximately 25 microns of

dry ﬁ lm, which acts as a transit primer.

We can offer a choice of red, grey and black

paint as standard and can provide custom

paint colours on request.

In line with our commitment to the

environment, our steel primers are water

based, odourless and environmentally

friendly.

Our fully automated 6 turbine Gietart shot-

blasting, primer painting and drying line is capable

of processing materials up to 20,000mm long,

1500mm wide and 400mm high. The shot blasting,

painting and drying line is located at the very

centre of our processing facility, feeding saws and

drills to ensure materials remain under cover and

are fully traceable at all times.

We also offer a “free issue” service where customers

can supply their own steel for shot blasting.

Upon entry to the system, all materials are pre-heated

to the optimum temperature to ensure an even

application through the shot blasting machine.

We currently export regularly into Europe

and offer a complete service delivering

by road to European destinations door

to door. Alternatively we can export wrap

your steel and deliver to a UK port on

a FOB or CIFFO basis. Exporting is the

lifeblood of the UK economy and we

do everything we can to support and

encourage it.

At Tomrods, we pride ourselves in

delivering 'on time' using our own ﬂ eet of

articulated and rigid vehicles. Our crane

ofﬂ oad facility is available for customers

who require assistance ofﬂ oading

materials safely.

Our ﬂ eet of articulated lorries are able to deliver

an individual payload of 28 tonnes and up to

21m in length. Rigid vehicles with their 10 tonnes

payload are ideal for shorter materials and where

access may be restricted.

We also have a rigid lorry capable of carrying 9

tonnes with crane off-loading facilities. It is essential

that we deliver your steel orders on time and as

such all our vehicles are either loaded on our night

shift or on the same day. For customer convenience,

customers can collect their own steel orders if

required.
