Bringing MicroStrategy Reporting, Analysis, and Monitoring to

Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

Enterprise-scale Reporting within Microsoft Office for an Application of Any Size, from Departmental to Enterprise

With MicroStrategy Office, business users never need to leave their Microsoft application to access MicroStrategy reports.

Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word files can become live repositories of scorecards, reports, charts, Pivot Tables, and Pivot Charts, all of which are always linked back through the MicroStrategy business intelligence platform for the latest data. Corporations can extend BI to all users and be assured that data will be 100% consistent across the enterprise at any scale, from departmental to enterprise, regardless of the user interface – MicroStrategy Web, Desktop, or Office.

Based on Industry Standards

MicroStrategy Office is fully consistent with Microsoft’s evolving strategy of integrating Microsoft Office with enterprise information systems. MicroStrategy Office is designed using Microsoft .NET technology and accesses the MicroStrategy BI platform using Web Services. Since MicroStrategy Office is driven by Web Services, BI applications are deployable on extranets. Users across the organization can access all data directly from Microsoft Office.

With MicroStrategy Office, business users

can create and run MicroStrategy reports

directly in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and

Word. Business users can format, sort, and

organize data from MicroStrategy reports

just as they would any other Microsoft

table or chart. Moreover, users can refresh

all data in MicroStrategy reports embedded

within their spreadsheet, presentation, or

document with a single mouse-click and then

work freely offline. Whenever users refresh

the data, they have the opportunity to

re-specify the report contents through

MicroStrategy’s unparalleled prompting

features.

Simple Access to All Analysis and Reports for Business Users

MicroStrategy Office Delivers Unprecedented Intelligence to Microsoft Users

MicroStrategy Office gives business users simple, direct access to critical enterprise or departmental data from Microsoft Office. Prior to MicroStrategy Office, business users relied on two distinct and non-integrated business environments to report, analyze, and monitor critical corporate performance data: a business intelligence application for data, reports, and analysis, and Microsoft Office for their personal productivity.

To achieve the desired results, users often had to export their business intelligence data from multiple BI applications into Microsoft Office to perform data analysis, format their data, or distribute this information across their organization.

This approach creates issues of security, scalability, and manageability. However, business users continued to maintain these separate environments because of their strong need to access, manipulate, and format data through Microsoft Office.

MicroStrategy Office Brings Business Intelligence to the Entire Enterprise

With MicroStrategy Office, business people can access all of their critical BI data directly through Microsoft Office with ease. MicroStrategy Office leverages the MicroStrategy platform to provide Office users with centrally managed security, scalability, and integration while always maintaining a direct link back to the underlying data, thereby providing business people with a simple, transparent window into all of their data.

Any MicroStrategy report or dashboard (shown) can be included in a Microsoft Word document.

Reusable Scorecards and Reports in Excel

Excel is the first place most business users go to organize data into reports. MicroStrategy Office lets business users make intuitive report selections to access data and run reports directly into their Excel workbooks. Once there, business users can leverage this information in a much more meaningful way than ever before, creating worksheets with reports, scorecards, dashboards, and OLAP analysis with Excel Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts.

Convenient Report Books

Business users frequently assemble all the reports they need in one convenient report book made of many worksheets. MicroStrategy Office allows business users to place reports on separate worksheets or put many reports on one worksheet; they can even choose the exact cell location to place a report. Not only can they control which reports to use, they can select what actually appears on reports. MicroStrategy Office uses the powerful and flexible prompting capability inherent in any parameterized MicroStrategy report to let users choose exactly what data they would like to see in a report.

One-click Refresh of Report Books

Once the report book is assembled, business users can reuse it for as long as they like; it is a “live” document.

The workbook can be refreshed automatically when it is opened or with a single click of the refresh button. With parameterized reports, the business user can even specify whether they would like to re-answer prompts or just reuse their previous prompt selections. Since all reports originate from MicroStrategy BI applications, the business user and IT Multiple reports can be run on to

Convenient and Familiar Analysis in Excel

Business users frequently move data from BI reports into Excel for further analysis and/or formatting. Now, with MicroStrategy Office, business users can run several business intelligence reports from the MicroStrategy BI platform directly into an Excel workbook with no additional steps required. Once this data is in Excel, users can manipulate and format the data just as they would with any other data in Excel. MicroStrategy Office also allows users to directly run reports as a live chart or an image; data only; a PDF; or as Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts.

Full Use of Excel Features

Once reports or data are in Excel, business users can modify both the data and presentation using every available Excel feature.

Some of the common Excel operations that a business user can perform are:

• Inserting new calculations using Excel functions

• Sorting and filtering

• Organizing data in outline mode

• Transposing rows and columns

• Applying column, row, and cell level formatting

• Adding cell level comments

• Conditional formatting of rows, columns, and cells

• Employing Excel’s full range of charts

• Formatting chart elements such as plot area, series, and legend

• Other operations such as cut-copy-paste, insert/delete new rows and columns, resize graphs, and more

The advanced capabilities of MicroStrategy Office allow rendering of highly formatted grids and graphs, including conditional thresholds, numeric formats, cell and text colors, fonts, graph types, and graph properties. Additional formatting and calculations may be added in Excel and will be kept when the workbook is refreshed.

Powerful Analysis in Excel

Pivot Tables and Charts

Excel is the clear choice of many business users for any data analysis. MicroStrategy Office delivers reports and data to Excel where business users can slice-and-dice, manipulate, and format the data, however they desire. MicroStrategy Office does not hinder Excel’s capabilities. MicroStrategy Office even speeds up the analytic process by giving business users the ability to run reports directly into Excel Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts.

Advanced Analysis

Business users will want to take advantage of the full set of Excel’s analytical capabilities such as sorting, filtering, outlining, goal seek, and formatting. Excel’s entire library of financial, statistical, mathematical, and logical functions are available as are more advanced analytical capabilities in MicroStrategy Office such as the Analysis Toolpak for ANOVA and regression analysis.

Offline Analysis

Business users can take their Excel workbooks full of MicroStrategy reports and data anywhere they wish.

Business users can format, manipulate, and investigate the data. Once they reconnect to the network, they can refresh with one click.

Macros and VBA Scripting

Business users who have created Excel workbooks for analysis, including those with VBA scripting and macro processing, will certainly want to re-use them. MicroStrategy Office was designed to preserve all this work and effort, while also allowing business users to program custom Refresh report data in Pivot Tables and Charts with one click Slice the data using Excel Data Filtering

Template Page Title

MicroStrategy Office enhances PowerPoint presentations with up-to-date, data-rich insight. All MicroStrategy Office features apply equally to PowerPoint as they do to Excel.

For example, a PowerPoint presentation can contain many MicroStrategy reports and dashboards on one slide or on many slides. The reports and data can be fully formatted, precisely located, and manipulated in PowerPoint to create boardroom quality presentations.

Custom Presentations

Business users can quickly create and save many custom presentations while reusing a standard presentation’s overall layout and format. Presentations created in PowerPoint with MicroStrategy Office can use MicroStrategy’s parameterized reports to precisely choose and tailor the report data.

This means a business user can create several different presentations by hitting the Refresh button, choosing different data options (e.g., time, geography, customer, and/or product) when prompted, and then saving them as unique files.

Secure and Shareable

These live PowerPoint presentations are completely secure, because MicroStrategy Office leverages the comprehensive MicroStrategy BI Platform security architecture. Access to the BI data is completely secure for each authorized user.

This means a presentation without data could be shared with many business users. Once the business users connect and are authorized as a valid user of the MicroStrategy BI application, they can refresh the presentation with one click and each business user will receive his or her applicable data and reports only.

Support Center

Operations Dashboard

PowerPoint is often used to present both summary-level and detailed-level information. MicroStrategy Office makes it easy to include well-formatted information such as a dashboard directly into presentations. In this case, the dashboard is fully interactive, even when offline, and may be shared with other Office users and can be automatically refreshed with the latest data upon opening.

Design New MicroStrategy Reports and Dashboards

MicroStrategy Office lets business users design their own reports and dashboards directly from Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, or Word.

Design New Reports and Dashboards

MicroStrategy Office lets users create new reports and dashboards or edit existing dashboards and reports. These reports are saved into MicroStrategy’s central repository for all BI application information, which is essential for business users who prefer to work in Microsoft Office. Business managers and analysts are empowered with a high level of BI self-service. Moreover, this reduces IT’s burden to create the reports and dashboards demanded from the business.

Once these reports and dashboards are created, they can be made available to all users from any MicroStrategy interface.

Ad Hoc Reporting

Many times, analysts need to find answers to their business questions that are not already addressed by existing reports and dashboards. MicroStrategy Office lets them design new ad hoc reports and dashboards from scratch with full access to every analytical object such as metrics, filters, prompts, and calculations. MicroStrategy Office also speeds up the report and dashboard creation process through the availability of pre-defined report and dashboard templates.

These templates can be parameterized (prompted), which allows users to provide input selections to define what business analytics, attributes, and criteria to include on the reports.

Increased Collaboration

MicroStrategy Office allows business users to add comments and notes to reports from an Office application. Other business users can read or modify these notes when they access the same reports from any MicroStrategy interface.
