“Archangels”

In September Noreen and I visited our grandchildren in Olympia, Washington. In October we had the opportunity to visit our grandchildren in McKinney, Texas and to be there for them while their parents were away for my daughter-in-law’s family event. I walked backed and forth with my granddaughter to her elementary school each day and Noreen and I picked up my grandson and his friend each day at the High School in the afternoon. While the kids were at school, Noreen and I had the opportunity to attend daily Mass, walk to the local Starbucks for coffee, and go out to lunch at the local restaurant. My afternoons were spent riding my son’s mountain bike ten to fifteen miles each day around town. After dinner we took a family walk and brought their two dogs along with us. McKinney is a city of 200,000 people, north of Dallas, and is a community which was built upon several large ranches that used to be in the area. There are several golf courses, numerous parks, and walking paths throughout the city.

The one Catholic Church is Saint Gabriel the Archangel which is a 1.5 mile walk from my son’s house. It is a beautiful church that was recently completed in 2019.

So why did I title this article Archangels? When I was in Olympia, Washington the church I visited each day there was Saint Michael the Archangel. In McKinney Texas, it was Saint Gabriel’s. It hit me one afternoon on my bike ride that I had visited two states and came across two archangels, is this trend I wondered?

What do we know about the archangels? The word comes from the Greek meaning “chief angel.” The word appears in the Bible only twice: in 1 Thessalonians 4:16 (“For the Lord himself with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first”) and in Jude 1:9 (“Yet the archangel Michael, when he argued with the devil in dispute over the body of Moses, did not venture to pronounce a reviling judgement upon him but said: May the Lord rebuke you!”).

What do we know about the three archangels?

 Michael (spiritual warrior), led the angelic hosts in the struggle against Lucifer and his fellow fallen angels, is the one angel who is explicitly called an archangel (Dan. 10:13- 21, Jude 1:9; Rev. 12:7),

 Raphael (identified with healing), who assisted Tobias (Tobit 3:25), and

 Gabriel (God is my strength), who was sent to Daniel, Zechariah, and Mary (Dan 8:16, 9:21, Luke 1:19-26).

(Catholic Bible Dictionary, Hahn 2009, p. 66).

Maybe the next state that I visit will have a church named Saint Raphael’s?

The feast day for the archangels is on September 29 each year.

COATS FOR KIDS

The 2021 Coats for Kids Drive!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

The 2021 Coats for Kids Program, which is organized by the Knights of Columbus Council #819, has donated more than 200 coats to needy children throughout the Mondadnock Region.

We have more than doubled our donations from last year.

None of this could have been done without the generation monetary support of the parishioners of the Parish of the Holy Spirit and organizations such as Love for Life. Thank You!

This year Council #819 expanded its program by partnering with St. Vincent De Paul Pantry to donate coats for its clients, including adults. This coordination has resulted in an additional donation of 36 coats to needy residents. Thank you to St.

Vincent De Paul for your assistance in meeting this need.

This increase in donations means that we are out of coats. Not surprisingly, we have had the same problem with buying coats that nearly every other person or organization has had with purchasing goods: low or no inventory. We have resorted to buying coats on line or from local merchants, in addition the bulk purchases from the Knights of Columbus headquarters. We continue to seek additional donations so that we can have coats available during the winter to meet needs that arise and also to build up a stock to start the program next winter. Thank you for your continued support.

Checks can be made out to Knights of Columbus Council 819

(memo: Coats for Kids) There are three ways to donate:

(1) Mail your check to: Parish of the Holy Spirit, Knights of Columbus, 161 Main Street, Keene, NH 03431;

(2) Place your donation in the weekly collection basket in an envelope marked Coats for Kids; or

(3) Place your donation in one of the designated jars at the entrances to St. Bernard or St. Margaret Mary Churches.

Thank you.

Join us this Sunday (11/21) in honoring the patroness of one of our parish churches, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque! We will meet at 4pm in St. Bernard’s parish hall. Get excited!

Dear Parish Family and Friends,

This weekend would normally be our Love for Life Collection, but I am currently out of state and wanted to use this time to reflect on the plans for our parish and schools to attend the National March for Life 2022.

Since arriving here at the Parish of the Holy Spirit, Fr. Alan has hoped to organize a bus trip for the parish and the schools to go to Washington DC to participate in the annual March for Life. This event has taken place in Washington DC every year since 1974 on the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade (January 22nd). It is a beautiful time to gather as a people of Life to pray together. The spirit of the March for Life is one of life affirming peace, unity, joy and hope for all participants. Many of the participants are young people and it is edifying to see the young people joy-filled, unified and proclaiming their belief in the dignity of life and their hopeful prayers to protect all un- born lives.

In my experience as March for Life Coordinator at my previous parish, we took a bus filled with students from Mount Royal Academy as well as families and individual parishioners. There were a number of years where our 80 year old mother of nine, Phyllis, travelled with us as well as families with pregnant mothers and toddlers all on the same bus with Mount Royal students. It was very beautiful to witness the wide range of ages and vocations coming together on a long trip with each other in a spirit of love and unity. It truly felt like a family trip and we learned so much and received so many graces while on the pilgrimage. There were a few years that we coor- dinated with Joy Davis here and traveled with some of the parishioners from Keene as well. Sadly, after our pastor was moved, the new pastor did not support the effort and Mount Royal Academy took over the planning and implementation of the trip. There has been a bus going from the Newport area now since 2005!

Fr. Alan has hoped to begin the same tradition here at Parish of the Holy Spirit with Our Lady of Mercy Academy and St. Joseph’s 8th graders. This year Chelsea Herman is coordinating the students and youth group members and I am coordinating the parish members who want to participate in the March for Life.

This is our first planning attempt since COVID has entered the reality of life. Planning and implementing the trip is under a pretty heavy time crunch due to the realities of navigating the circumstances we still face with COVID. The Diocese has decided to continue with the March for Life this year and there will be busses leaving from Laconia, Manchester and Nashua.

We have the opportunity here to fill a bus from Keene and travel to DC from January 20 - 22. We need to have people reserve seats before November 29! Everyone is encouraged to come! Individuals, families and students please sign up to attend by contacting the Parish Office.

Last weekend the first announcements were made and fliers were put in the churches with the basic information for the trip. You will find the information this weekend in the bulletin also. Please call the office or contact Chelsea Herman or myself via email if you have questions and desire to come along.

Please do not let financial concerns keep you away! Call the parish office if you need financial assistance.

Finally, if you are not able to attend, please pray for the pilgrims and also consider making a donation to Love for Life in December towards the March for Life.

Love for Life will now include donations to the March for Life to help all attend.
