Secure and efficient cooling.

Data centers guarantee high security for IT infrastructure; the requirements for building services equipment are equally high. In particular, an absolutely reliable cooling system is essential for cooling server rooms. Hoval ServeLine has been specially designed for this application – it provides absolutely secure cooling with extremely high energy efficiency: mechanical cooling is not required for 97 % of the overall operating time.

Sophisticated solution. ServeLine cools the IT environ- ment indirectly with high-efficiency plate heat exchangers.

The air in the server room remains completely separated from the fresh air; this eliminates the possibility of dust or varia- tions in humidity affecting highly sensitive IT equipment. The system uses the interaction of different resources for cooling with minimal energy consumption depending on the current environmental conditions:

Redundant generation of cooling energy guarantees the required high availability.

ServeLine is suitable for use in data centers with one hundred to several thousand square metres of air-conditioned IT area.

The modular construction allows the cooling capacity of the system to be scaled up as required. The required cooling capacity can be adjusted or expanded step by step simply by parallel installation of additional compactly designed individual ServeCool modules. Hoval supports and advises you with its

expertise during design and implementation of the cooling system to ensure that it is optimally set up for the layout of the computer rooms.

Capacity-optimised control. The newly designed ServeNet control system seamlessly records all relevant parameters. It compares the current efficiencies of the indirect free cooling and the adiabatic and mechanical cooling, and controls the interaction of the different systems to ensure energy-optimised, demand-led operation.

ServeNet can be fully integrated into the Datacenter Infrastructure Management (DCIM). It supplies all relevant information for real-time evaluation of the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and continuous maximisation of the availability and efficiency of the data center.

Minimise energy costs.

Air conditioning the server rooms offers the greatest potential for reducing energy consumption in data centers. Hoval ServeLine is setting standards: for optimum efficiency fresh air is used for free cooling; however, indirect cooling with plate heat exchangers means that there is no need to worry about adverse influences from the outside. If fresh-air cooling is no longer sufficient, adiabatic cooling is used, which saves energy and resources. There are only a few days in the year that require mechanical cooling.

Vast energy savings. Comparison of the annual operating data of Hoval ServeLine with those of a conventional cooling system clearly shows the huge potential for savings:

ServeLine reaches its full cooling capacity with indirect free cooling up to an outside temperature of 18 °C. That is equivalent to 83 % of the total operating time (in compari- son with 25 % with the conventional cooling system).

If temperatures increase further, cooling is exclusively adiabatic up to about 27 °C outside temperature (depending on the humidity).

Only at even higher outside temperatures – i.e. only 3%

of the operating time – does ServeLine operate in mixed mode with adiabatic and mechanical cooling.

In comparison: A conventional cooling system cools in mixed mode from an outside temperature of 5 °C (free and mechanical cooling) and exclusively with mechanical cooling from 17 °C.

The results: A massive improvement in power usage effective- ness, fast payback and not least a positive climate balance.

Thinking in solutions.

As a specialist in indoor climate solutions in all possible applications, Hoval concentrates on thoroughly researched integrated solutions. The development of Hoval ServeLine concentrated on the specific requirements for data centers. The result: A refined cooling solution that offers modular design, efficiency and availability. ServeLine offers operators of data centers low total cost of ownership and maximum reliability.

Modularity. ServeLine has a modular structure; the system consists of a number of individual ServeCool modules and the associated ServeNet control system. The total output is therefore freely scalable. It can be flexibly adjusted to the actual growth phase of the data center, which means that the investment can be made in stages.

Efficiency. Hoval ServeLine operates with three cooling pro- cesses: indirect free cooling, adiabatic cooling and mechanical cooling. This combination gives the highest efficiencies; the energy efficiency ratio (EER) rises to values above 18.

Availability. The cooling coils are designed so that the data center can be cooled exclusively from the cold supply of chilled water systems in an emergency. The generation of cooling energy is therefore redundant and guarantees the required high availability.

Saving energy with system.

Operators of data centers today are responsible for significantly reducing the energy requirements of IT infrastructure. The international company e-shelter colocation GmbH is meeting this challenge. The company has set up a new data center in Rüsselsheim in the MW range, but the energy consumption is significantly lower than that of comparable systems. For air conditioning e-shelter is using the solution developed in cooperation with Hoval.

Hoval ServeLine uses fresh air throughout the year to condition the environment of the high- tech servers; it cools indirectly using plate heat exchangers.

The system can provide the required cooling capacity of 80 kW per module by fresh-air cool- ing up to an outside temperature of 18 °C. That means: 7470 annual hours of high-availability operation without using even one compressor.

The system cools with the patented adiabatic system from 18 °C to 27 °C outside temperature (an average of around 1160 hours per year) without switching on mechanical cooling.

During the remaining 130 hours the mechani- cal cooling system is run under partial load in combination with adiabatic cooling for optimum effi ciency.

Hoval ServeLine is also a good choice with its extremely space-saving design. The system only requires an installation area of about 14 m² (including space for service and maintenance) for an output of 100 kW.

The instrumentation and control system, developed with e-shelter, uses an industrial controller and provides the optimum control strategy at all times.

The system selects the most effi cient system for the current conditions from indirect free cooling, adiabatic cooling and mechanical cooling to optimise the operating costs for the innovative housing provider.
