Reading Passage 1
Read the story below then answer Question 2A and Question 2B that follow.
The Wild Taro Girl
. . . After carefully looking into the problem the chief called the ladies together, and 1 presented his plan to them. The womenfolk followed the instruction and before each
one left her house the pudding was put in the appointed place.
. . . It was not long before the village was quiet; so quiet that you could hear the wind whistle softly amongst the leaves of the bamboo. The children too went with their 5 parents to learn new skills in making gardens, and planting different kinds of crops.
To the Wild Taro Girl this was the sign which told her everyone had gone. It was the time she was waiting for.
She hurriedly entered the first house and soon somethingcaught her eye. . . . ‘Ah, I know,’ she said to herself, moving closer and closer. ‘A pudding.’ 10 She quickly slipped the warm pudding into her basket, and tip-toed quietly back to
the front door, closed it, and walked away.
. . . In the Wild Taro Girl’s house she could hear the men snoring beside the fire. The
children were curled up on the bare bark of a tree made for sleeping on. She quietly pulled the pudding out of the basket and began to eat. The pudding was 15 so delicious that she ate it up and started on the second. She was not quite satisfied yet,

Reading Passage 2
Crown Prince Tupou To’a is Tonga’s new King
Tongans will soon welcome their new king, Crown Prince Tupou To’a Lavaka 1 Ata, after the death of King George Tupou V. The King went into an intensive
care unit in a Hong Kong hospital about 10 days ago but his condition rapidly deteriorated and he died last night. The Tongan Government confirmed his
passing on Tongan radio Monday morning, and has issued a statement in Tongan. 5
Shortly after his coronation, the King appointed his younger brother as Crown Prince and heir to the throne. The Prince was at the King’s bedside in Hong Kong when he died. The 52 year old prince is currently based in Canberra acting as Tonga’s High Commissioner to Australia for a number of years.
The youngest of the late King Taufa’ahau Tupou 1V’s children, he is no stranger 10 to politics, having been the island nation’s appointed Prime Minister. In 2006 he
stepped down as Prime Minister.
In his early twenties he joined the Tonga Defence Services. The crown prince is married with three children. His eldest son, known by the title of Ulukalala, now
steps up as the heir to the throne. 15
