“My Bad,”as the Kids Say - I’m sorry I made a mistake when I said that there were no First Communions at the 8 a.m. Masses on Sundays. Please remember that for the next three weeks the first four or five pews in the center section will be reserved for our First Communicants and their families. Our First Communicants and their Moms and Dads will receive communion first, then communions will proceed as usual. Please make it a point to stop our little ones who are receiving their First Communions and congratulate them on their special day. Officer of the Year…Samantha Phillips - After attending the Columbus Police Officer of the Year Award Ceremony for Samantha Phillips, a St. Anne Church parishioner, I thought it was important for the parish to know why she received this distinguished honor. This is what was written in the program:

“In November of 2020 while working in an off-duty capacity at Peachtree Mall Corporal Phillips immediately recognized that a child in the food courts was choking and could not breathe. Corporal Phillips immediately started the “Child Heimlich Maneuver.” Corporal Phillips was successful in her actions with the child and the child started to breathe again. In December of 2020 while working again in an off-duty capacity at Peachtree Mall, Corporal Phillips was notified about a child who was choking inside one of the retail stores. Upon her arrival she realized that the 11-month-old was unresponsive. Corporal Phillips immediately began CPR until EMS could arrive on the scene. The child was transported to the hospital and survived. In both of these instances if Corporal Phillips had not been on the scene, the outcome would have been very different.”

Here is a picture of Samantha and her family at the awards ceremony. We make it a point to pray for our first responders and military personnel at every Mass. They face challenges every day that many of us will not face in a lifetime. The good that most of them do can’t be measured. Thank you, Samantha, for your good work.

Confirmation - Once again, this year, just under 70 of our young people received Confirmation this past Thursday. Many or most of them are in the 7th grade. There are a few, mostly from military families, who are older and have moved into the area and asked to receive Confirmation. Confirmation is always bittersweet for me. It is “sweet” because I am so happy to see so many young people receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. I am also happy that so many families still consider Confirmation important and encourage their children to receive it. It is “bitter” because, truth be told, we don’t see many of these children again. We have no programs geared toward them that will continue to support and deepen their faith through the challenging years of high school and beyond. I have long believed that for a parish of our size this is a serious problem which we need to address. Rest assured you will be hearing more about it in the future.

Graduation - Our St. Anne-Pacelli High School Class of 2021 graduated from beautiful Deimel Field on May 15th. Fifty-eight young people walked up to Bishop Stephen Parkes and received their diplomas. Even with - and especially with - the pandemic, this has been a banner year for our beautiful school. Enrollment is up, as are test scores. The sports teams are doing great. Our basketball and baseball teams went to the Elite Eight in the state playoffs, and our soccer team is currently in the final four (at time of publication). As I type this, we were all holding our breath for the game on Tuesday. I’ll let you know how they did at Mass. These are all significant accomplishments. In addition to showcasing their talents on the fields and courts, our St. Anne-Pacelli students are also good stewards of their time, talent and treasure. They are responsible for running the monthly evening distribution of food at St. Anne Community Outreach. We have every reason to be proud of our school and are grateful to the administration, faculty and staff who make it the special place it is.

Adoration - Adoration with the women of our parish was beautiful last week. The attendance was a little lower with all that is going on, but it is a privilege to sit in church with some of the Moms and Grandmas of the parish. I strongly encourage all of the men and women of our parish to consider giving an hour a week of their time to our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration. You won’t be disappointed. The Lord always gives more than He takes. Quiet peaceful time is a perfect opportunity to rest, recharge and refocus on what’s important in life.

Hobby Lobby? - I’m not an artsy kind of person so I don’t go to Hobby Lobby too often. In fact, I’ve been there twice. After Christmas I went there to find a picture frame and as I was walking down an aisle I saw a bunch of different plaques which read the same thing:

“I choose you. And I'll choose you over and over and over. Without pause, without a doubt, in a heartbeat. I'll keep choosing you.”

I guess that might be something that two people who chose to be married could say to each other. It struck me however that these words could also describe our relationship with God. God chooses us every day and we choose God every day. Our relationship with God is a concrete choice. Now there is a little frame right outside my door, next to my crucifix, with those words. I glance at it every day when I leave to go for Mass in the morning and when I go to bed at night. Sometimes when I say those words it is God speaking to me, other times when I say those words I know it is my heart that is speaking to God. As I type this I guess I could also be speaking to each and every one of you in our parish. “I chose you!” Here, at St. Church, may we all choose each other.

SPECIAL SERIES BY DEACON EDDIE

Join Deacon Eddie Ensley for a series of talks and group sessions on letting God lighten our load by taking refuge in Him. This Zoom series entitled How Prayer and Spirituality Can Mend Our Emotions and Ease Our Stresses is a 6 session program which will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7-8 p.m., May 19th - June 23rd. The

pandemic will likely leave us with more casualties than World War I, World War II and Vietnam together. Millions of people must bear the unbearable. The earth has shifted beneath our feet and most all of us have lots of grieving and mending to do. You will find that drawing close to God can be like a comforting blanket to wrap around your shoulders when you are feeling the pain of it all; His love can help you grieve, comforting your heart when it feels loss and reassuring you that you are not alone. Learn how God can ease your stress through prayer and how the warmth of his healing love can mend hurts of the past and present and help you open your heart to heal strained relationships, whether in the family, the parish or at work. We will be learning compassion, loving what God loves. These sessions will be a time to take a sunbath in the love of God. For more information and for the link to register go to: www.stannecsg.com/ease-our-stresses.

Please contact Christina at schooltones@comcast.net if you have a graduating senior to be recognized or with any questions. A light reception and a time of fellowship with others will follow. Feel free to bring a picnic lunch and stay at the playground afterwards. Are you considering homeschooling? Please join us!

ALWAYS TOGETHER AT MASS

6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER

GLORIA

ALL: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify

you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten

Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of

the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you

alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

FIRST READING

Acts 1:1-11

In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught until the day he was taken up, after giving instructions

through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he

had suffered, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While meeting with them, he

enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for “the promise of the Father about which you have heard me

speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” When they had gathered

together they asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He answered them, “It is not for

you to know the times or seasons that the Father has established by his own authority. But you will receive power when the

Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of

the earth.” When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight. While

they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.

They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into

heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.” The Word of the Lord.

ALL: Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9

R. (6) God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.

All you peoples, clap your hands,

shout to God with cries of gladness,

For the LORD, the Most High, the awesome,

is the great king over all the earth.

R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.

God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy;

the LORD, amid trumpet blasts.

Sing praise to God, sing praise;

sing praise to our king, sing praise.

R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.

For king of all the earth is God;

sing hymns of praise.

God reigns over the nations,

God sits upon his holy throne.

R. God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.

SECOND READING Eph 4:1-13

Brothers and sisters, I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all

humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit

through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one

faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each of us

according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore, it says: He ascended on high and took prisoners captive; he gave gifts

to men. What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended into the lower regions of the earth? The one who

descended is also the one who ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some as

apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of

ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to

mature to manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ. The word of the Lord.

6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Profession

Faith

GOSPEL Mk 16:15-20

Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is

baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my

name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they

drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then the Lord Jesus,

after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and

preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs. The Gospel of

the Lord.

ALL: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in one God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

(At the words that follow,

up to and including

“and became man,” all bow)

and by the Holy Spirit

was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION (For those who cannot be present)

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my

soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You

were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

he suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the

dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.
