Position Title: Student Associate - Astrophysics

Number of Hours per Week: 10 hours

Duration of Appointment: August 2015 – May 2016

Supervisor: Prof.Charles Bailyn

Responsibilities: Reduction and analysis of infrared and optical imaging data of stars. (The nature of the particular star in question is described below). The data take the form of digital images, with many stars in the field. The star of particular interest is situated in the wings of a much brighter star, which makes precision measurements difficult. The assistant will:

 Work with the supervisor to devise algorithms and code to deconvolve the light from the star from that of its neighbor.

 Test the results in various ways, and then carry out the process on the full data set.

Additional Information: The star in question is called 4U1543-47 (the name refers to the coordinates on the sky). It is a binary star system consisting of a black hole and a main sequence A-type star. There is evidence that this black hole may be the least massive of all currently known black holes – the goal of the data reduction is to make a more accurate measurement of the mass. This source is also of interest in that it is a transient system, currently in quiescence (that is, no matter is falling onto the black hole so the companion star can be easily observed). However it is overdue for a new outburst – observations are being carried out daily in Chile, and in the event of a new outburst, the project as described may be superseded by urgent time sensitive data analysis of the rapidly brightening system.

How to Apply: Please email cipe@yale-nus.edu.sg with 1-2 paragraphs of interest and relevant experience, including any experience with coding and image processing.

Position Title: Student Associate – Economics and Political Economy

Number of Hours per Week: 4-6 (flexible)

Duration of Appointment: 2-3 weeks, available immediately

Supervisor: Prof.Guillem Riambau

Responsibilities: The faculty supervisor is currently working on the project "Fair-weather

friends? Household Social Networks and Disaster Relief Aid" with Professor Cruz at the University of British Columbia. This project uses household survey data collected by the World Bank in the Isabela province (Philippines). The goal is to analyze the value of political networks in aid supply and

distribution. In particular, the project seeks to answer whether well-connected people are better able to secure aid in case of (i) unpredictable emergencies like a disaster (typhoons, etc.) and (ii) more

predictable emergencies, like hunger or income loss. The project also seeks to understand more generally the determinants of ordinary aid distribution at the household level (for instance, how

important is to live to a paved road in order to get frequent and reliable aid) and the choices households make when they need help (Do they resort to friends first, or to money lenders? Or to politicians? What determines their choice?).

As far as the faculty supervisors know, little has been done in terms of establishing the value of

connections when it comes to aid relief at the micro level. Much of the relevant literature has focused at the national or regional level, but not so much on understanding local connections at the household and personal level.

The research assistant will thus spend two or three weeks to create a comprehensive database with the most relevant research carried out in this area.

Requirements: Interest in some of the following: political economy, elections and political networks, development and aid relief. Knowledge of/interest in the Philippines or tagalog are a plus but by no means a necessary condition.

At this point, we are mostly looking for someone interested in this broad area who is willing to spend a few hours a week looking for the most interesting research done, and summarizing it.

Additional Information: Successful applicants will surely be considered for further opportunities that this or similar projects will entail.

How to Apply: Please submit 1-2 paragraphs of interest and relevant experience, plus optional supporting documents to cipe@yale-nus.edu.sg.
