Program Description

The ABSN for Paramedics program is designed for paramedics who desire to transition to the field of nursing. As a nurse, you will make a difference in the lives of others. You will be challenged and satisfied, knowing that nursing is more than just a profession, but rather a passion.

The ABSN program provides students with a professional foundation, integrating nursing theory with skills required for nursing practice. Through the ABSNP program, you will gain valuable patient care experience, critical decision making skills and confidence. This full-time program of study combines online learning with hands-on clinical practice.

• Fundamentals of Nursing • Pharmacology for Nursing I The ABSNP program is a 69-credit hour, full-time, accelerated program

designed around the traditional paramedic work schedule. The program consists of online instruction, clinicals at healthcare facilities, and onsite testing, Lab, and simulation at our Oak Brook, IL regional center. You will start and complete the program with your class group in about 16 months. The curriculum is based on the mission, philosophy, and conceptual framework of Olivet Nazarene University’s Department of Nursing.

Graduation requirements include successful completion of the ABSN curriculum, a GPA of 2.75 or above and 128 semester hours of college credit, which will include required general education and prerequisite courses. Graduates of this program will be awarded a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

Is the ABSNP program a full-time program? Yes, it is a full-time program. It combines online learning with practical, hands-on clinical practice. The program is very demanding.

What is the length of the ABSNP program? The ABSNP program is 69 credit hours in 16 months. How do I get my application started? Initially, submit a completed application with transcripts from all previously attended accredited institutions.

What is the typical candidate for the program? The ABSNP program is designed for paramedics who desire to transition to the field of nursing from another degree and who have earned at least 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university.

Do you require a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score? No, but passing the HESI entrance exam is required. Is there a GPA requirement? A student who already has a Bachelor’s degree can be accepted if they have no less than a 2.75 science GPA and no less than an overall GPA of 2.5.

Are there any other requirements? You must complete a criminal background check, show evidence of good health, pass a drug test, and complete all prerequisite courses with a grade “C” or better before the start of the program. A complete list can be provided upon request.

Where do students hold clinical hours? Clinical practices are held at various local hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the Chicago area.

How much does the program cost? Total package price is approximately $53,075.00.

Are there scholarships available? Yes, an ABSN scholarship will be offered to every student who scores an 86% or higher on the HESI exam and/or has a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the nine nursing pre-requisite courses.

Students can qualify for anywhere between $1,000-$6,000 towards their tuition.

Is financial aid available? Students must make arrangements to apply for financial aid through Olivet Nazarene University. Candidates are also encouraged to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). What number do I call for questions about financial aid? Will I be a Registered Nurse when I graduate? Upon completing the program, you will receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. This degree will make you eligible to take the National Council Licensure

Examination (NCLEX). Once you pass the NCLEX exam, you officially become a Registered Nurse and may practice as one.

Is the nursing profession still in demand? Yes. For further projections, please visit the U.S. Department of Labor website.

How are the semesters grouped? Each semester is four months long.

Can I still be admitted to the program even though I failed in another nursing school? No, you are automatically disqualified from joining the program.

Is the program open to non-Christians? Yes, everyone is welcome.

Why is a math exam included in the program? Math is an essential component in the calculation of medication dosages in the clinical setting. Every student is required to take a math quiz at the start of each semester and has three opportunities to pass at 100%.

Are there any other costs associated with the program? Yes, students are required to purchase books, uniforms and supplies.

Are dorms available? No, there are no nursing student dorms at our Oak Brook campus.

Why should I get a BSN degree? BSN offers in-depth training to give students excellent opportunities for advancement.

What is your faculty-student ratio? There is approximately one faculty member for each 17 students, an advantage for your nursing education.

I failed Chemistry twice in another school. Can I still be admitted? No, you will not be admitted into the program if any of the following courses are taken more than twice: Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Microbiology, Lifespan Development, and Pathophysiology. Students cannot fail any science course twice. How long are science courses accepted? The following courses are only valid for ten years: Anatomy and Physiology I & II, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Pathophysiology.

Is the program approved? Yes, the program is fully accredited regionally and by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Do you offer classes at night? No. Classes are only offered during the day but clinical classes may be held at times in the evenings. Senior Capstone clinicals may involve the night shift.

What is the program’s pass rate for NCLEX? ABSN graduates have demonstrated a 91 % first time pass rate. Does the program provide transportation to clinical sites? No. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to clinical sites.

How many students are admitted to the program each year? The program admits approximately 144 students each year.

Alternative Loans

Payment Policy for programs that begin on or after July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016

Payment Policy

I. Payment through Financial Aid

a. Tuition may be deferred if the student has a complete Financial Aid file in the Olivet Nazarene Financial Aid Office.

b. Financial Aid money is evaluated on a term basis. Students receiving Financial Aid will receive two disbursements per Financial Aid year, to be applied to their student account.

c. Financial Aid must beapplied for each yearof your program.

II. Refund Policy For Tuition Only

For traditional courses great than 8 weeks, the following refund policy applies: Did not attend - Full Refund

First week-100% Second-week-90% Third week-75% Fourth week-50% Fifth week-25%

Sixth week or more - No Refund

For all other courses 8 weeks or less in length the following refund policy applies: a. No class sessions attended: Full Tuition refund.

b. Attend one class session: Full Tuition Refund and $50 Cancellation Fee. c. Attend two or more class sessions: No refund.

**To receive tuition refund the University must have written notification of withdrawal.

III. Pro Rata Refund - Financial Aid Recipients

When a student withdraws (or is withdrawn) from the program prior to the completion of an award year, federal and state financial aid must be repaid to the appropriate program(s) as mandated by regulations published by the U.S. Department of Education.

The effective date of any withdrawal or course drop for refund of federal student financial aid

refund/repayment calculation purposes is the date the student last attended class. Student financial aid will be refunded to federal programs in the following order: Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan and Federal Subsidized Direct Loan.

IV. Collection Policy

a. When a student becomes delinquent in payment, he/she will receive a notice of possible

administrative withdrawal. If the student fails to get his/her account paid up-to-date, he/she will be administratively withdrawn from his/her program before his/her next module.

b. Once a student has been administratively withdrawn from his/her program, he/she will be given at least thirty days to send the payment to the Student Accounts Office. If the student fails to pay off his/her account by this time, his/her account will be turned over to the collection agency.

V. DROP-IN Courses, etc.

Students are locked into their cohort rate for their core program coursework. When it becomes necessary for a student to take a course outside of their program (ie. fulfilling general education requirements or program prerequisites), they will be charged the applicable course rate. For students who withdraw from a program and enroll in a different cohort at a later date, new tuition rates may apply.
