LSI Language Learning System

We’re passionate about language learning. That’s why we’re

constantly reviewing the latest trends and methodology in

the field.

Academic staff from every LSI school participate in the research and development of our programmes. We ensure that the latest theories of language learning are considered and evaluated throughout our centres. That’s why every one of our schools is a healthy environment for learning. It also means that all our students benefit from a massive academic team based throughout 15 schools in 8 different countries. Developed and refined over the last 40 years, the following points are fundamental to our language learning system:

Language Immersion

At LSI we believe that the best way to learn a language is to study in the country where the language is spoken. We want you to immerse yourself in the culture and truly ‘live the language’. This is the most efficient and satisfying way to learn and remains at the core of LSI’s language learning system.

LSI Levels

Upon arrival at any LSI school, we’ll give you a comprehensive language level test so we ensure you go straight into the right class for you. LSI levels have been closely matched to the Common European Framework, TOEFL iBT, TOEIC, IELTS and University of Cambridge English examinations. To move up to the next LSI level you need to master our specific ‘level objectives’, which you can demonstrate by test scores and class participation. At LSI we understand that some students learn faster than others, so our course is tailored for you as the individual. There are regular opportunities to discuss your progress with your teacher and contribute to the weekly plans for your class. This ensures you get more of what you need, more of the time.

Through systematic testing, monitoring your class performance and constant teacher appraisal, the school academic director will track your progress and identify exactly when you have mastered the level objectives and are ready to move up to the next level. This monitoring and testing allows us to grade between and within levels, allowing you to spend more time studying with the students and materials at the level which is right for you.

Latest Materials

We’re constantly reviewing the latest materials available for language learning. We provide you with what our academic team have identified as being the very best materials currently available for your level. We are also committed to providing the latest technology, utilising the most cutting edge audio, video and web based resources to bring modern, real world language into the classroom.

Cultural Exchange

We are proud of and committed to the cultural exchange that happens within our centres. As you ‘learn and live the language’ you will gain a greater understanding of the country in which you are studying. And as our students come from all over the world, our centres are not just places to learn languages, but are also places to meet and share experiences with people from a huge range of backgrounds and cultures. This is why our students find our programme to be such an enriching experience.

Quality Teachers

We understand that our students’ single most identifiable measure of programme quality is the teacher. That’s why at LSI we only work with the very best teachers; experienced, highly motivated and qualified with country specific teaching credentials.

As such we have a systematic programme of teacher development and performance evaluation. All of our students are regularly invited to provide feedback so that we can ensure that your teacher meets your expectations.

ISY & Your Expectations

As ISY courses are anywhere from 24 to 48 weeks in length we expect our students to achieve excellent results.

The level reached after an ISY course depends on a variety of factors:

• Duration of the course – the longer the course, the better the results

• Number of lessons – often a more intensive course yields better results

• The language level of the students – the higher the language level, the more time it may take to advance to the next level Final results will always depend on you, the student. Active participation in afternoon social activities, making new friends from all over the world, immersing yourself in the local culture, as well as speaking the target language as much as possible, will have enormous impact on your achievements.

Accommodation

All options are available (see page 20 and individual LSI language centres in our pull-out). However, we recommend our carefully chosen homestays to ISY students, at least for the first month of your programme – the friendly welcome you receive helps you settle quickly into life in a new country.

Academic English

LSI’s Academic English

programme gives you the skills

in spoken and written English

that you need to succeed at an

English-speaking university

or college. The programme is

flexible and can be tailored to

meet your individual needs.

Academic English combines general English with a focus on key academic skills and exam English. The programme includes regular, focussed grammar and vocabulary reviews, which allows students to target their individual language needs while developing their academic reading and writing skills. This is all supported by specialised, targeted, online resources through our online learning system, E-LSI.

• Duration: 30 x 50 minutes (25 hours)* • 15 students max. per class

• Intermediate to Advanced levels • Course length: 4 – 48 weeks • Age 16+

Programme Requirements

Academic English is designed for students who need to meet English language requirements to enter an English-speaking university, college or further education programme, or simply wish to expand their ability to use English in an academic setting. Academic English is appropriate for students who have at least a strong intermediate level of English. We recommend that students who do not yet have a sufficient level of English join the general English programme until they reach the necessary level. This is an excellent way to reach your goals as quickly as possible from a lower starting point.

What skills do we teach?

• University research and presentation skills • Effective communication in academic situations • Exam skills and techniques

• Note taking and organising

• Essay writing skills, including critical thinking and developing and presenting arguments • Optional classes include:

- Cambridge English Exam courses, FCE/CAE/CPE

- IELTS, TOEFL iBT, TOEIC - Business English

* LSI Brighton also offers a morning Academic English course. Duration: 20 x 50 minutes (16.67 hours)

LSI Language Learning System

LSI’s Academic English programme uses the LSI Language Learning System, a complete package with quality instructors and the latest language learning materials and technology for each level and phase of learning. Each student receives personal supervision from our academic team in conjunction with the school’s university counsellor to ensure that his or her academic goals are met. Students can also choose classes in English for Business and exam preparation classes for the Cambridge English Language Assessment, IELTS, TOEFL iBT or TOEIC as part of the programme. This can be an excellent way for students to improve their CV and gain qualifications as they prepare for the next stage in life.

LSI Progress Testing

Regular testing and multi-skill evaluations track exactly how far you have progressed and ensure that our academic team keeps you on track to meet your goals.

University Pathway Service

The LSI University Pathway Service

is designed specifically to help

and prepare our students to apply

to and thrive at English-speaking

universities or colleges.

In addition to intensive language and academic tuition of our Academic English programme, our trained university counsellors help you choose the right university or college programme. They assist you at every stage of the application process, from start to finish. At the same time, LSI’s academic team work with you to design a study plan tailored to your needs and then monitor your progress to ensure that you achieve these goals wherever possible. The University Pathway Service includes: • Preliminary level placement and academic

advice before arriving at LSI • Assistance with conditional letters of

admission to universities and colleges (see right)

• Individual study programmes tailored to meet your needs and goals

• Counselling throughout your course, including assistance in completing applications, visiting universities and preparing for interviews. We can also assist with your application documents to any of our partner universities and colleges

• Visa extension advice and support*

* Not available in the UK

Which LSI schools offer the University Pathway Service?

We offer the service at all our schools in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It is available to any student booking 12 weeks or more of our Intensive 30 or Academic English Programme.

LSI University Counsellors

Every LSI school has a trained counsellor on site to provide advice throughout the university application process. Our friendly and professional counsellors work with you one-to-one to ensure that you choose the best university programme for you and with the school’s academic team to monitor your progress. This ensures that you are on target to reach the academic standards required by your chosen university.

Our counsellors will also assist you with the university application process from start to finish, whether you wish to take up a place at one of our partner institutions or enrol at another university of your choice.

Conditional letters of admission

Many colleges and universities in the UK, USA and Canada offer conditional admission to international students. Conditional admission is perfect for international students who are academically qualified but need to improve their English skills before they begin their degree programmes.

In New Zealand and Australia, LSI works with all the local Universities, Polytechnics and Tertiary institutions. If you would like to go on to study at these institutions, we will assist you with your appointments to see the International Admissions Staff.

How does conditional admission work?

Students apply to a university or college and, if they meet the academic requirements, they are issued with a conditional letter of admission. This letter states which additional requirements are needed before the student can begin their programme. These additional requirements focus on meeting the English language requirements of the university or college. LSI’s Academic English programme and University Pathway Service help you meet those requirements.

Students at LSI schools in the UK, USA and Canada may receive conditional letters of admission for their chosen university or college which ensure them places on degree courses subject to completion of an LSI programme. Some of LSI’s partner universities in the USA and Canada accept LSI’s own levels as proof of English language ability; other institutions may require either IELTS or TOEFL iBT scores. LSI can arrange a conditional letter of admission to your chosen university or college for you before you arrive. Once you begin your course at LSI, our academic team prepare you to meet the additional language requirements for your course and take you step by step through the application process.

are the three important factors

in choosing a language school.
