Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

SPEAK, LORD, WE ARE LISTENING

In today’s first reading God keeps calling out in the night to a sleeping boy. Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is calling. But God’s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10).

In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak,” they say, “we are listening.” God’s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urging us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live according to God’s word. Let’s ask today for the ability to keep our ears open so we don’t miss God’s voice.

FEAST OF FAITH The Greeting

At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets us with the words, “The Lord be with you.” These simple words are not like the greetings that we exchange all day long—our “good mornings,” our “hellos” and “how are yous.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament. In the book of Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spoken by Boaz to the harvesters who are laboring in his fields (2:4); in the book of Judges, an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12), where they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead his oppressed people to victory and freedom. For us, the words become a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with us, and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). Our response—“And also with you,” soon to be “And with your spirit”—returns to the presider this prayer for the Lord’s presence. As we know from the scriptures, a prayer for the Lord’s presence is no small thing, for when God comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and challenge. God’s presence transforms us.

Thank You for Your Generosity

Our parish is blessed by so many kind and generous people. Even in the midst of the ever-changing

circumstances of parish life during a pandemic, many of our parishioners have continued to send or bring their contributions to the parish. Many have begun using Online Giving. I am so grateful that so many people have continued to contribute. It has been very helpful to the financial situation of the parish. While our income is down significantly, the generosity shown by so many has enabled us to maintain the parish complex, keep current with our bills, and pay our dedicated staff. Thank you all, very much!

Even as Masses are being celebrated outside on the school grounds, there will be specially marked baskets on the tables near the entrance to the field into which you can place your offerings. Of course, you can continue to mail us your contribution or drop it off at the office (8:30am – 12:30pm). Online giving remains a good option as well. Thank you for supporting your parish.

In Memoriam — Rafael Cordova

casa: “Bien hecho, buen y fiel siervo.

En su libro, " Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief,"

MENTAL HEALTH CORNER

Grief & Loss

Grief is intense emotional suffering caused by loss. Grief and loss are part of life and are experienced by most of us at some point in life. Grief is natural to human beings and should be organic. Nowadays,

many people are experiencing grief during COVID-19 pandemic. Grief is a normal response to loss after a loved one's death. It can also happen through a divorce, loss of a job, loss of a friendship, loss of support. It can also occur in response to the loss of stability when drastic changes happen in our lives. As a society, we all experience a drastic change caused by the pandemic; therefore, we grieve our normalcy. And amid our loss, we can still be supportive when others mourn the death of a loved one. Consequently, it is necessary to identify and respect each stage of grief, understanding that each person's grief is different.

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, a swiss-American

psychiatrist, suggested in her book, "On Death and Dying" Five common reactions or stages of grief that most of us experience when grieving,

Denial Anger Bargaining Depression Acceptance

In his book, "Finding Meaning: The sixth Stage of Grief," David Kessler suggests Meaning as the sixth stage of grief.

How to help when others are grieving?

Avoid rescuing or fixing: The grieving person does not need anyone to repair her/him. Please do not force it: We may believe that pushing them to talk and process their emotions will help, but it is not necessarily true; people need their time to get ready to speak.

Make yourself accessible, offer people space to grieve, and let the person know that you are available when she/he needs you.

Remember that each person copes with loss

differently. If you are grieving, allow yourself time to process all of your emotions. When you are ready to talk about all your feelings, look for a friend, a family member, community support, or a mental health professional to talk about it.

On the Fear of Death

By Rabindranath Tagore, Fruit-Gathering, 1916 Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers

but to be fearless in facing them. Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain

but for the heart to conquer it. Let me not look for allies in life's battlefield

but to my own strength.

Let me not crave in anxious fear to be saved but hope for the patience to win my freedom.

Grant me that I may not be a coward, feeling your mercy in my success alone, but let me find the grasp of your hand in my failure.

Religious Education & Family Ministry

Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

Reflection: The Church returns to Ordinary Time and the color green. During this season we celebrate the life and ministry of Christ and learn the meaning of living as his disciples.

This Sunday’s scripture passage shows how disciples seek the company of Jesus. Jesus is referred to as Rabbi, Teacher, Messiah, Christ, Lamb of God. These titles show the promises that God makes in sending his only Son Jesus. As we hear of Jesus’ healing and teaching, we can learn what it means to be daughters and sons of God. What does it take to be a follower of Jesus? How can we follow Jesus as a family? As a parish community?

Prayer Intention: Jesus, guide our words and actions so that others may get to know you as the Christ.

Please contact the Office for Religious Education & Family Ministry with questions about sacramental preparation and ongoing faith formation at [email protected] or 760-729-8442.
