HAWKEYES CRUISE PAST INSTATE RIVAL IOWA STATE
Iowa posted a convincing 105-77 triumph over Iowa State on Friday in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk
Game in Iowa City. Iowa has won four of the last five in the series, including three straight.
• Iowa’s season-high 105 points and 28-point victory are the most points scored by either
team and the largest margin of victory, respectively, in the 74-game series history.
•
All-American Luka Garza netted 34 points (25 second-half points) on an efficient
13-of-14 shooting from the field, including 6-of-7 from 3-point range. That is the most points
scored by a Division I player who has played less than 20 minutes in a game over the
last 25 seasons.
• Garza has reached the 30-point plateau eight career times, tying Hall of Famer Don
Nelson for third most in program history. Garza scored 21 straight Iowa points spanning
5:15 in the second half. Garza passed Roy Devyn Marble and B.J. Armstrong for fifth in
Iowa career scoring. Garza drained a career six 3-pointers, five in the second half and
four on four consecutive possessions spanning 2:13.
• Jordan Bohannon joins Bob Hansen, Kevin Boyle, and Mark Gannon as the only Hawkeyes
to register four victories over the Cyclones in their career.
• Redshirt sophomore Jack Nunge posted his second career double-double (17 points,
10 rebounds).
• The Hawkeyes forced 17 Iowa State turnovers, while Iowa committed a season-low
seven turnovers.
RAINING THREES
Three Hawkeyes sank five or more 3-pointers in Tuesday’s victory over No. 16 North Caro
-lina: Jordan Bohannon (7), CJ Fredrick (5), and Joe Wieskamp (5). It was the first time in
UNC history that three opponent players made five or more triples in a game. It is also the
only time in the last 25 years that three teammates (on any team) have made 5+ threes
apiece in regulation against an AP Top 25 opponent.

Fran McCaffery, who is signed through the 2024 sea -son, is in his 1th season as the head basketball coach at the University of Iowa and his 25th year overall
as a college head coach. McCaffery has reached the
20-win plateau nine of the last 13 seasons, including four of the last six years.
McCaffery spent five seasons (2005-10) as the
head coach at Siena, six years at UNC-Greensboro (1999-2005) and three seasons at Lehigh (1985-88) before joining the Hawkeyes.
McCaffery has over three decades of Division I
coaching experience. He concluded his 38th
sea-son as a collegiate coach in 2020, which includes 24 years as a head coach
and 14 as an assistant. McCaffery is one of 14 coaches to lead at least four different Division I teams to the NCAA Tournament.
McCaffery, 61, holds a career mark of 450-320 (.584) and guided his teams
to 12 postseason appearances (nine NCAA & four NIT). Iowa likely would have competed in another NCAA Tournament in 2020, if not for the NCAA
canceling the postseason due to COVID-19. He is 199-143 (.582) at Iowa; the second winningest coach in program history. McCaffery led Iowa to wins in three of the last five NCAA Tournaments (2015, 2016, and 2019).
Since taking over the Iowa program in 2010, Iowa has earned seven
post-season tournament berths (4 NCAA, 3 NIT). McCaffery coached Iowa to 25
victories in 2013, equaling the second-most win total in program history.
Mc-Caffery has guided five different first team honorees over the last seven years, including the 2020 National and Big Ten Player of the Year, Luka Garza. McCaffery has posted upper division finishes in seven of the last eight sea -sons at Iowa and 19 of 24 sea-sons as a head coach. He has posted 20 wins or more 10 of the last 14 seasons, including six of the last eight years at Iowa (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, and 2020). Iowa’s 163 victories between 2013-19 are the most over an eight-year span at Iowa since 2013-1987-94.
McCaffery and the Hawkeyes boast a 110-29 (.791) home record the last
eight seasons, which includes a school-record 18 wins in 2014 and 13
consecu-tive victories in 2019-20.
McCaffery’s five years at Siena were the best in its 70-year history. He led the Saints on an incredible run that ended with three straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. McCaffery’s Saints owned a 112-51 (.687) record in his five years with the program. He guided the Saints to four consecutive 20-win seasons. McCaffery’s achievements earned the head coach Siena Hall of Fame recognition in 2017.
The 2009 MAAC Coach of the Year and 2010 District I Coach of the Year is the third winningest coach, by percentage, in league history (68-22, .756). He is the only coach to guide a MAAC program to two NCAA Tournament wins.
McCaffery led his 2008 and 2009 teams to first round NCAA Tournament victo
-ries over Vanderbilt and Ohio State, respectively.
In his final two seasons at Siena, he coached the Saints to back-to-back
27-win campaigns and boasted a combined 39-3 (.929) record against MAAC op-ponents, which included MAAC Tournament contests.
McCaffery began his coaching career as an assistant at Penn (1982-83) and Lehigh (1983-85). After three seasons as head coach at Lehigh, he spent 11
seasons as an assistant at Notre Dame (1988-99).
McCaffery played basketball at Wake Forest his freshman year (1977-78) and then concluded his collegiate playing career at Penn his final three seasons
(1979-82).
He earned his B.S. degree in Economics from The Wharton School (Penn) in
1982. McCaffery also earned a Master of Education from Lehigh in 1985.

LUKA GARZA CONTINUES WHERE HE LEFT OFF
• Garza scored 44 points at Michigan (Dec. 7, 2019) and 41 points versus Southern
Uni-versity (Nov. 27, 2020). He is one of two players in program history to score 40 points
or more in two games in a career (John Johnson, 49 and 46).
• He tallied 102 points in three games; that is the most points by any Division I player
over his first 3 games of a season since Davidson’s Stephen Curry had 106 in 2008-09.
• Garza is the only Division I player in the last 25 years to score 100+ points on 75.0
percent shooting over any 3-game span. The last NBA player to accomplish that over
a 3-game span was Shaquille O’Neal in January, 1996.
• Torched Southern University for 41 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Garza
net-ted 36 first-half points, which is believed to be the most points scored by a Hawkeye
in a half in program history. In the first half, Garza made all 12 field-goal attempts and
was 10-of-12 from the free throw line.
• His 41 points are the most points scored by a Hawkeye in a single-game in
Carver-Hawkeye Arena history (1983), besting 36 scored by Adam Haluska (2006) and Rob
Griffin (2000). The arena record is 45 points by Brian Quinnett of Washington State in
a neutral site contest contested against Loyola Marymount (1986).
•
Finished the Southern University contest with a .933 field goal percentage (14-of-15),
including a perfect 1.000 (3-of-3) from 3-point range, which is the best single-game
mark by a Big Ten player since 1984 (Minnesota’s Tommy Davis, 15-of-16, at Indiana).
• Posted his third double-double of the season and 23rd of his career with 16 points, 14
rebounds, and a season-high four blocks against No. 16 North Carolina.
VALUING THE BASKETBALL
Three of Iowa’s guards have outstanding assist-to-turnover numbers through five games.
Connor McCaffery, who led the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio last season, has a 6.3
ratio (19 assists, 3 turnovers). CJ Fredrick has a 5.0 ratio (15 assists, 3 turnovers), while
Jordan Bohannon has a 3.1 ratio (25 assists, 8 turnovers).
SCOUTING NORTHERN ILLINOIS
• Hailing from the Mid-American Conference, Northern Illinois is 0-4 to begin the season.
Last time out, the Huskies fell in their conference opener (79-70) in overtime against
Ball State at home. Last season, NIU was 18-13 overall and 11-7 in league play, and
captured a MAC West division title last season.
• NIU is led by returning starters and juniors, Trendon Hankerson (13.3 ppg) and Darius
Beane (13.8 ppg). Sophomore Tyler Cochran (14 ppg) is the third Huskie to average
double digits.
• The Huskies have only one player who has made more than three 3-pointers this season,
Trendon Hankerson (10-of-25, .400). As a team, NIU is shooting 28 percent from long
distance (17-of-61).
• The Huskies have no freshmen on their 15-player roster; there are three seniors, eight
juniors, and four sophomores.
• Sunday will be NIU’s second road game of the season. The Huskies lost by 30 points at
Pittsburgh on Dec. 5 (89-59).
• The Huskies are coached by Mark Montgomery, who is in his 10th season at NIU. He
owns a 123-167 career record. His 123 wins are the third most in school history.
LAST MEETING VERSUS NORTHERN ILLINOIS
Iowa posted a 70-49 win over Northern Illinois on Nov. 26, 2014.
• Iowa blocked 12 shots, one shy of the school record of 13 set against Illinois in 2013.
Jarrod Uthoff denied a career-best five shots, while Gabriel Olaseni rejected four shots.
• The Hawkeyes forced 17 turnovers and converted those miscues into 22 points.
• Iowa outscored Northern Illinois, 11-0, in fast break points.
• Aaron White tallied 10 of his 14 points in the first half. Adam Woodbury netted 12
points and grabbed six rebounds.
• Iowa shot 79 percent from the free throw line, sinking 15 of its 19 attempts. Anthony
Clemmons was 6-of-7 from the foul line.
• Iowa’s bench produced 28 points, 19 of which came from Josh Oglesby (nine) and
