Franchise Coach

Position Description

Date: PURPOSE:

To develop, implement and lead a programme capable of preparing the Franchise Team to perform consistently and successfully in the ANZ Championships. The Coach will lead the Team on and off the court to the highest possible standard of excellence and professionalism, enhancing the Franchise brand and reputation.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Coach is ultimately accountable to the Chief Executive and Board who shall sign off plans and strategies developed to maximise the performance of the players and the team. The Coach will report to the Chief Executive on preparation and training programme planning, player

management, media and sponsorship matters including sponsorship obligations, media issues, player selections and contracts, team management and support personnel appointments and other financial and administrative matters.

1. Win – Achieve success in pinnacle events and maintain consistently competitive performances against Australia leading outside of pinnacle events.

2. Squad & Team Performance – Utilise and maximise available resources to ensure the individual players are technically, tactically, physically and mentally prepared to perform to the highest possible standard and to achieve success against any and all opposition. 3. Squad & Team Player Depth – Develop and prepare all Squad players so as to increase

depth of quality players in the Central Pulse Squad and competition for places in the final Central Pulse Team.

4. Squad and Team Selection – Convene and lead the selection process and take overall responsibility for ensuring the selection of the best available players.

5. Alignment - Build Relationships and work with Zone Coaches to create a sense of partnership within the zone. Clearly communicate Central Pulse’ goals, values and standards and share best practise in coaching, support services and team performance as appropriate to align and achieve the zone high performance objectives.

6. Media – Develop and foster positive and professional relationships with media personnel 7. Commercial/Sponsors – Work with Central Zone marketing team to establish positive and

professional relationships with key sponsors and to ensure that commercial obligations are met without compromising the performance of the Team and the contribution of funders and sponsors is appreciated and recognised at every appropriate opportunity.

8. The Rules of the Game – Maintain positive and professional working relationships with umpiring personnel, keep up to date with all rule amendments and ensure players and Team Management have a thorough understanding and respect for the rules of the game.

Coaching & Specialist Knowledge

 Demonstrates sound principles and methodology, including positional coverage and depth, in the squad selection.

 Ensures that selection of the playing team is consistent with individual and team performance, strengths and weaknesses, and with regard to opposition strengths and weaknesses, for each game.

 Manages & develops player performances in training by:

o Creating awareness & understanding that assists the players to learn & develop

o Explaining the specific training objectives for each coaching session and wherever appropriate setting and measuring successful implementation.

o Creating an environment that supports players to remain focused throughout the training session.

o Providing activities and practices that enhance the player’s technical and tactical

development while also helping players to be able to adapt and change within training environment.

o Developing & practicing game strategies to enhance strengths of own team and expose weaknesses in opposition teams.

o Providing timely, specific & constructive feedback on performance.

o Encouraging players to set individual training goals

o Adapting training to meet the changing circumstances and to meet individual player needs.

o Uses a variety of approaches to player learning

o Adjusts communication to different individuals

o Encourages players to have input into, and take ownership of training sessions.

o Uses innovation effectively to enhance performance.

 Manages & enhances player performances in competition by:

o Understanding and creating an environment for the players to focus effectively pre-game

o Providing timely and effective feedback on performance

o Recognising and adapting to the changing environment including use of tactical substitutions and changing game strategies.

o Recognizing when the player(s) require support and provide it

o Using effective and varied player and game review procedures

o Clearly identifies errors/problems and takes appropriate corrective action.  Improvement in performance by using technology and appropriate data

o Video analysis is used during games

o Players are able to review their performances on DVD/video

o Pulse statistics are shared with players appropriately and used to initiate improvement

 The team demonstrates significant improvement over the International season.

3. Planning & Organisation

 Understands and complies with the relevant policies and processes as determined by the zone.  Can develop and present an effective written periodised plan which is reviewed regularly and

adjusted accordingly allowing for possible barriers /challenges.

 Demonstrates ability to integrate all aspects of sports science into training programmes.  Compiles written player profiles for various stages of the programme.

 Training sessions are well structured, maximizing usage of time and resources available.  Has a process to review training sessions and implement improvements and changes when

required.

 Communicates openly and appropriately with players to ensure expectations are being met by both groups.

 Maximises performance by utilizing available resources and support services.  Provides all squad members an opportunity to perform and to be selected.

 Applies strategies to develop players’ self-reliance, self responsibility and leadership both on and off the court.

 Establishes time outside of training and provides support for players’ personal development. Building Relationships, Central Pulse Brand & Profile

 Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with, and is accessible to CEO, Central Zone Board & staff.

 Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with NZNPA, HPSNZ, NNZ, NZAS & Support Services personnel.

 Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with other Franchise, Regional and other National coaches to ensure ongoing development of any national squad members.  Shares best practice coaching experiences with the Zone Coaches and personnel as

appropriate or when required.

 Accessible to and acts in a professional manner when working with the Media.

 Establishes and maintains professional working relationships with umpires, bench league officials.

 Participates in promotional or commercial activities with sponsors as required, and has developed and maintained positive and accessible relationships with sponsors.

 Ensures that players and management understand the importance of ensuring the players are considered role models, and that the brand and profile of the players, management, Team and Central Pulse are portrayed positively in the media and publicly.
