Get physical and feel good

Kia kori, kia ora

Whatever your age, having a daily routine that keeps you physically active can do wonders for body and mind. Even small amounts of exercise can make a difference - what counts is that it’s regular and varied. Here’s what’s recommended if you’re over 65:

5 days a week...

do something that makes you breathe harder and increases your heart rate for half an hour. Good for your heart and lungs, but also for your brain.

This could be cycling, golf, brisk walking, housework, Kapa Haka, line dancing, stair climbing, swimming, table tennis, walking uphill, playing with grandchildren, Waka Ama, water aerobics or ZumbaGold.

3 days a week...

do something that helps keep you flexible. This could be bowls, modified Tai Chi, stretching, gardening, yoga, Pilates or washing the car.

And do something that improves your balance. This could be dancing, cycling, stand-ing on one leg, Poi Toa or Steady As You Go© classes.

2 days a week...

do something that strengthens your muscles and bones. This could be carrying shop-ping, weight training, Steady As You Go© classes, water aerobics, stair climbing or hill walking. Give it a go!

You’ll feel better, think better, sleep better. You’ll find it easier and more enjoyable to do everyday tasks. If you choose group activities, you’ll probably also make new friends.

Tip: it’s so much easier to get started and keep going if you make the activities fun, weave them into your daily and weekly routines, and do them with others.

Our Mission:

Age Concern promotes wellbeing, rights, respect and dignity for older people.

Our Vision:

An inclusive society where older people are connected, supported, empowered, celebrated and respected—Age Concern is the lead organization making this happen.

Information on monitored medical

alarms paid through Disability

Allowance

The Ministry of Social Development has undertak-en an opundertak-en and competitive selection process for determining which medical alarm suppliers will be accredited to supply monitored medical alarms paid through Disability Allowance.

MSD has negotiated with medical alarm suppliers to ensure our clients are receiving a quality service at a competitive price. As a result of this accredi-tation review, four companies will be

MSD-accredited for the supply of medical alarm services from 5 May 2014.

These four companies are (in alphabetical order): · ADT Security · Chubb New Zealand Limited · Freedom Alarms Limited · St John.

Bupa Care Services Ltd and Tunstall Lifecare will continue to be MSD-accredited up until 4 May 2014.

Clients can remain with their current supplier or transfer to one of the suppliers who will be MSD-accredited from 5 May 2014. Clients do not have to change supplier unless they wish to do so. MSD will continue to fund a client’s medical alarm cost through Disability Allowance if they choose to stay with their current supplier. Read more on our web-site:

BLOKES DAY OUT

Z Blokes Day Out stepped out twice this month

First we shot off to the Whakamaru power station where Craig from Mighty River Power showed us around the station while one of the generators was partially disman-tled and we were able to have a bit of a look into it. After that he shouted us out for lunch at the local Bullring. Very rustic, but a lovely meal which Vern, George S, Tony, Ron S, Jim and I thoroughly enjoyed. Then Ewen, George S,

Derek, Ron B, Tony, Vern, John, Bill and New-bie Fred stayed local and had lunch at the Rain bar in Papamoa. Then we revisited the TEL High-way. We were allowed to

travel the length of the highway with a guided tour by the manager.

A hugely interesting day and I recommend to all to book into the November trip.

We will be repeating this trip in November for those who missed out.

Back to one trip in June on the 13th where we will head to the Port of Tauranga to have a look at what they are up to with the deep dredging and have a tour through the port.

July takes us up to the Coromandel to visit the Driving Creek Railway so keep watch on the Age Concern Newsletters to find out when and where.

Thanks again to the local Z Energy teams for all your support

Library Corner

Books and DVDs are flying out the door from our book sale, which will continue at all our branches with fresh stock every day at $1 each until the end of May. It in-cludes lots of large print fiction and talking books, so come down and look for your favourite authors. They have to go, to make room for new titles.

The library’s Book Clubs are going well, with at least one club at each branch. If you enjoy sharing what you read, or getting ideas from others on good reads, come and try one out. Talk to our fiction expert, Diane Taggart, on 5777164 for details.

Do you find reading small print on bills and letters diffi-cult? Print magnifying computers are available at Tau-ranga and Mount libraries. Sara Ash recently showed staff how to get the best out of it. Sara is a young woman with a visual impairment. She explained how she has one of these machines in her home which she uses for all her reading. As an avid user of audio books from the library, she can put the case under the magnifier and read the synopsis on the back so she knows what to take home. It’s great for choosing books and videos as well. Bills, let-ters or newspapers can all be read on the magnifier and there are different light settings to try, depending on what works for your eye condition. People wanting to get a machine at home can contact the Foundation for the Blind, but you can try out the ones at the library first. Sara says they cost from $2000 upwards.

Council has just completed the consultation phase of the Annual Plan. The Plan proposed to rebuild the Greerton Library if it could be done with no impact on rates, dis-continue the Mobile library, and halve the book budget for next year. There were 237 submissions and 3 petitions in favour of keeping the Mobile Library and 8 in favour of stopping it, including the one from Age Concern. There were only a few submissions on the other two items. Council will make its final decision in June
