stay informed of the most recent digital developments to make appropriate decisions about how best to harness technology within their business. The SMSF industry is no exception. Join us as we hear from Darren Stevens, Bravura Solutions, Director, Product Management and Strategy, as he highlights the key challenges and opportunities facing the SMSF and superannuation industries.

& Strategy, Bravura Solutions

9:35am SESSION 2: Regulations and Legislation Update Speaker: Where are we at with SMSFs after the Tax Discussion Paper, this year’s budget, new

legislation, rulings, determinations and recent court cases? This session will simplify what’s inthe mix and the various strategies to assist you in advising your clients.

Graeme Colley

Director Technical and Professional Standards, SMSF Association

10:25am MORNING TEA

10:50am SESSION 3: Do you know your ABC’s of ECPI Speaker: The ATO recently commented that “nearly three quarters of SMSF members are 60 and

over and while the majority of SMSFs are in the accumulation phase, the number of funds reporting exempt current pension income (ECPI) is growing”.

Starting to pay pensions brings new challenges for trustees such as calculating and making minimum pension payments, managing assets on a segregated or unsegregated basis, calculating ECPI and correctly claiming expenses.

This session will explore different case studies and whether segregation is needed or not, practical steps to do the segregation, including audit, and what implications flow from it.

Philip LaGreca

Head of Technical Services, Multiport Pty Ltd

11:50am SESSION 4: Understanding (Superannuation) Heaven and Hell Speakers: Super estate preparation is about the member planning for heaven to avoid hell for those left

behind; at least this was the plan for; Messrs Donovan, Katz, Munro, Smith, Jones, Nguyen and others. Those left behind who complain are; de factos (real and claimed), children (step, adopted, natural and sort of), spouses (of various kinds), the ATO and the SCT. It is time to explore the heavenly heart of super to understand the shape that can be had that can lead to heaven not hell. This session will include;

• That discovers the true current legal nature of what is superannuation; • Which will scare you to the risks and exposures of super today; • But will open up your thinking to what can truly be achieved;

• For blended marriages, dysfunctional relationships and important promises; • And which will avoid or limit section 55 SIS Act risks for you;

• Achieving the only true binding super death benefits; and • Enabling a supplementary brace and protect simple strategy.

3:30pm SESSION 7: The “Super” – market Speaker: There are some areas where SMSF strategies may not work effectively, such as blended

families or families with a disabled child. There are also events that may cause trustees to consider the ongoing viability of their SMSF. Understanding the available alternatives and their relative merits can assist practitioners to provide best interest advice to clients. This session explores what non SMSF strategies might dovetail from an SMSF to provide solutions outside the ‘SMSF box’.
