PART II: QUESTION – RESPONSE

Chú ý để làm phần này trong đầu lúc nào cũng nghĩ tới phƣơng án loại trừ, đừng cứ lúc nào cũng chờ câu trả lời đúng. Cái dễ của phần này là chỉ có 3 lựa chọn/ câu hỏi, và trong 3 lựa chọn chắc chắn các bạn sẽ loại trừ đƣợc ít nhất một đáp án. Nên cứ yên tâm mà lấy

điểm phần này các bạn nhé! * Format of Part II - 30 question (11-40) - 3 options/question - Direction: 60 seconds * Question Types - WH-questions: where/when/who/what/why/which

- How questions: how/ how often/ how much/ how long/ how far/… - Yes/No questions: Do/Does/Did/Have/Has/Will…

- Tag/negative question - Choice question: “or”

- Request/Suggestion question: Can/Would/Should/… - Statement

* Chúng ta nên tập trung kỹ vào 3 TIPs sau đây, nó sẽ quyết định cho phần này:

* Tip 1: Basic Answering Patterns (depends on the type of the sentences): Phần

này các bạn bắt buộc phải xác định được loại câu hỏi: Where, When, Yes-no question,…….

* Tip 2: “I don’t know” type: Thông thường những câu trả lời kiểu như sau hay là

đáp án nên các bạn chú ý nhé! - I don’t know

- I have no idea/ clue/ information - I am not sure

- I haven’t decided yet - It hasn’t been decided yet

* Tip 3: Similar sound/ same sound: Đây là một phương pháp loại trừ rất hay mà

mọi người ít để ý, đó là các key words trong câu hỏi mà câu trả lời lặp lại chính từ đó hay họ của từ đó sẽ là ĐÁP ÁN SAI

- store/ store; book/ book; last/ last; show/ show; package/ pack; folder/ older…

Ex1: Where do you think is the progress report? a. It progressed more rapidly  loại

- Loại phương pháp sai thay vì chọn phương pháp đúng - Sử dụng Tip “I don’t know” type

1/ WH-Questions – where:

* Tip 1: Basic Answering Patterns

+ Preposition (in, on, at,…) + place  Kinh điển cho câu hỏi where, đừng nhầm với (in, at, on …+ thời gian) thì chết nhé 

Ex: Where are you going to spend your vacation? – In Rome

+ Go to + place/ To + place Câu trả lời ngắn gọn bắt đầu bằng “Go…./ To…+ nơi chốn”. Và cũng dặn trƣớc là đừng có nhầm với “To + V1”  chỉ mục đích nhé  nó dùng để trả lời cho câu hỏi “Why”

Ex: Where is the Sales Department? - Go to the second floor

- To the second floor

+ Adverbial phrases of place  Tất nhiên các cụm giới từ: trƣớc, sau, bên cạnh, rẽ trái, rẽ phải,…. Cũng là những dấu hiệu để trả lời cho câu hỏi “Where”

Ex: Where is the Opera House? – It’s in front of the bus station

 From, behind/ next to/ near/ by/ beside/ here/ there/ in front of/ at the corner, around, turn left, turn right, across, from + places, ...

+ Answer with no direct references of place  không nghe đƣợc thì cố gắng sử dụng phƣơng pháp loại trừ nhé 

Ex: Where is the annual budget report? – Anna took it early this morning

* NOTE: Có thể áp dụng TIP 2 vs TIP3 ở đây

2/ WH-Question – When # What time

* Tip 1: Basic Answering Patterns

+ Time expressions + ago

Ex: When did you finish the report? – 3 days ago + When + past tense verbs

Ex: When did you start studying English? – When I was 6 years old + Prepositions (on/ in/ at/ by) + Future time

Ex: When are you going on vacation? – On Sarturday + When + present tense verbs

Ex: When are you going to come to the office? – When she arrives + Not until + Future time

Ex: When is the project expected to be finished? – Not until next year + Adverbial phrases of time: right now, right after, couple of days …

* Tricks: Có hai bẫy hay gặp trong loại này - Bẫy về Thì (Tense)

Ex: When did you start studying English? a. 3 years ago

b. Next year

- Bẫy về loại câu trả lời cho When or How long? Ex: How long have you been studying English? a. 3 years ago

b. For 3 years 3/ WH-Questions – Who

+ Personal names Trả lời bằng tên riêng

Ex: Who has been invited to the banquet? – Mr Martinez + Positions/ ranks/ titles Trả lời bằng vị trí, chức vụ

Ex: Who is in charge of the marketing department now? -The former sales director + Company/ Department names Trả lời bằng tên công ty, phòng ban

Ex: Who has designed the new office building? - The Design House Company

+ Personal pronouns Trả lời bằng I’ll, I do,…

Ex: Who has the annual budget report? – I do

* Một số vị trí công việc hay xuất hiện trong đề thi

* Một số tên phòng ban hay xuất hiện trong đề thi

3/ WH-Questions – Why:

Các bạn đừng trông chờ quá nhiều về câu trả lời bắt đầu kinh điển bằng “Because”  Rất

ít trường hợp trả lời dễ ăn như vậy các bạn nhé!

- To + V (To express purpose/ intentions) câu hỏi “tại sao” và câu trả lời thƣờng ngắn gọn bắt đầu bằng “To” để chỉ mục đích!

Ex: Why did Barry request access to the database? a. I’ve seen it before

b. On his way to the post office

c. To check for any inaccurate information

- So + S + V…  Đây cũng là một cấu trúc câu kinh điển cho câu trả lời cho “Why” Ex1: Why did you go out for lunch so early today?

a. Sorry, but I’ve already eaten lunch

b. So I can send this report by five

c. She always arrives early for work

Ex2: Why did Mr.Gomez send you a product catalogue? a. Roughly in an hour

b. We usually order many different products

c. So I can keep up with the lastest trends

- Because / Due to/ For Dạng này có ra nhƣng rất hiếm và nếu ra thì quá dễ rồi 

Ex: Why are you oworking so late this evening?  Because I have to finish this project

- Omission of because  Và đây mới là dạng hay ra thi đây, lƣợc bỏ từ “Because” chỉ còn để lại câu giải thích, nghe thì có vẻ căng quá, nhƣng còn rất nhiều cách, tại sao ta không cố gắng sử dụng các phƣơng pháp khác để loại trừ nhỉ !!! cách hay đấy!

Ex: Why did we change our office supplier?  (Because) Their deliveries were always late

- Explanation/ Personal opinions (to answer Why~not)  Phải nói dạng câu “Why~not” dễ cực kỳ nhé!

* Đối với câu hỏi Why don’t………, Why didn’t……

 Câu trả lời thường gặp đưa ra ý kiến cá nhân, một số từ hay gặp là: Sure, good idea, not

a bad idea, I’d be glad to, a great job, Sorry,…

Ex1: Why didn’t anyone answer the phone this morning?

a. Sure, that’s a good idea

b. You can use my phone

c. I think the office is closed today

Ex2: Why don’t we prepare the auditorium for the interview? a. It’ll be held in the auditorium

b. Because we bought some office furniture

c. That’s not a bad idea

Ex: Why are’t the computer working?

 I think there is a problem with the main power

4/ WH-Questions – What

- Nouns that refer to time, colors and categories

(To answer “what time/ what color/ what kind of……?) Ex: What time will the movie start? – Five o’clock

- Imperatives (To answer “What should I do…..?) Ex:What should I do with this package?

 Give it to the manager - Objects of transitive verbs

Ex: What did you buy yesterday? – Office supplies

- Personal opinions ( To answer “What do you think of…/ What’s your opinion…?)  Đƣa ra ý kiến cá nhân và thƣờng bằng đầu bằng I think

Ex: What is your opinion of the bank’s new lending policy?  I think it’s a little bit dangerous

5/ Câu hỏi với How

- How much  2 dollars - How many  2 people - How often  Once a week - How long  For 3 years - How long ago  3 years ago - How far  3 kilometers - How soon  Next Monday

- How about  Let’s do something, souds like a good idea… - How come  = Why

- How + are + S?  I’m fine (adj)

- How + did/do/does/can + S + V_inf?

Ex1: How did you send the package to the new client? a. She didn’t pack the shipment

b. By express mail

c. The assistant confirmed a reservation

Ex2: How will the office equipment be transported? a. Next to the parking lot

b. Sometime next week c. It will go by courier

6/ Yes/No Question: Dạng này, dễ mà lại khó, khó ở chỗ dễ bị lừa về thì, hay về đại từ - Yes/ No + S: The subject must be relevant to the content of the question.

Ex: Did the technician fix our system? – Yes he was very skilled - Yes + additional information to that given in the question Ex: Are you looking for anything in particular?

 Yes, I need a gift for my mother’s birthday

- No + information to explain why the information given in the question is not true. Ex: Were you late to work this morning? – No, I arrived on time

- No direct “Yes” or “No” is actually heard Ex: Do you carry sports shoes in this store?  They’re displayed over there

* Tricks:

- Bẫy Đại từ ( Pronoun Distractors) Ex: Did you meet Susan by any chance?  Yes, I saw him in the coffee shop yesterday Ex: Will your nephew be at the party?

 No, she will not

- Bẫy Thì (Tense Distractors)

Ex: Do you need any help? – Yes, I did

Ex: Did you remember her name? – Sure, I will 7/ Choice Question

- Chọn 1 trong 2

Ex: Would you like to have coffee or tea? – I want a cup of coffee

- Không có sự khác biệt để chọn 1 trong hai Câu trả lời dành cho ngƣời dễ chịu 

Ex: Would you be interested in pizza or pasta?  Either would be fine

 Both are fine

 It doesn’t matter to me  Whatever you say

 Anything is okey with me

- Không muốn chọn cái nào Câu trả lời dành cho mấy anh có vẻ hơi khó tính 

- Neither of them

Ex: Would you prefer a blue shirt or a red one?  I’d a green one. / May I suggest something else? - It is undecided Chƣa quyết định

Ex: Are you taking care of the work, or have you decided to give it to someone else?  I haven’t decided yet.

 Nothing has been decided yet  I don’t have any preference  It depends on ………

* NOTE:

TIP3 “Same sound/ Similar sound” không đƣợc áp dụng trong loại câu hỏi này nhé! 8/ Statement  Chỉ là một câu nói, không phải là câu hỏi

- Reponse: thông thƣờng sẽ hỏi lại

Ex1: Please call me when you have your paycheck.

a. Sure, what’s your extension again?

b. I’m glad to meet you c. No, I didn’t call him Ex2: This room is really hot.

a. The room is on the thirteenth floor

b. You’re meeting with the real estate agent

c. Why don’t you open the window?

Ex3: I don’t like the mood at this place

- Personal opinions (I think. ..., I thought,.... I’ll….)

* CHÚ Ý: Câu hỏi bắt đầu bằng “Do you know…., Could you tell me….”: Lưu ý câu hỏi này hiếm khi trả lời Yes/No. Khi nghe loại câu hỏi này phải chú ý từ đi sau “Do you know (?)…..” Do you know where/when/who……….? Và câu hỏi trở lại những dạng bắt đầu bằng where, when, why, who… ở trên.

Ex1: Do you know who will be replacing Alan when he retires? a. Yes, Mary has replaced the tires

b. It hasn’t been decided yet

c. This town is known for its seafood

Ex2: Do you know why Ms.Lopez is covening a meeting?

a. To introduce her new secrectary

b. We had to submit the report c. Sure, let’s meet in the cafeteria

Ex3: Could you tell me why all there computer are turned off?  How come you didn’t leave?

1/ Format of Short Conversation - Directions: 30 seconds - 30 Questions

- 16 seconds to transfer answers to the answer sheet 2/ Key to success

- Đọc lƣớt qua 3 câu hỏi và các câu trả lời - Khảo sát và ghi nhớ từ khóa

- Xâu chuỗi logic 3 câu hỏi

- Xác định hành động của nhân vật nam hay nữ và tập trung vào giọng của họ,

không nghe quá lang mang.

- Trong quá trình nghe, mắt phải liếc nhìn liên tục các từ khóa. - Chú ý các cụm từ đồng nghĩa: two hours ~ a couple of hours,… 3/ Topic questions

 Lắng nghe các từ liên quan và phải học từ vựng theo chủ đề. Một số nơi chốn và

từ vựng liên quan ra thi rất nhiều trong đề thi toeic.

2/ At an office building: cabinet, bookshelf, assistant, conference room, ….

- Question examples: Câu hỏi NGHỀ NGHIỆP o Who is the man?

 Có thể suy đoán theo ngữ cảnh hoặc kinh nghiệm. Giả dụ, giọng nam mở đầu bằng Welcome to …………  khả năng ông này là nhân viên của cái “…” đó, còn bà kia là “customer” nhỉ! Cứ tưởng tượng ra tình huống thực tế chúng ta cũng có thể phán đoán được! Nghe nhiều và tự rút kinh nghiệm nhé !!! 

- Question examples: Câu hỏi về HÀNH ĐỘNG, VIỆC LÀM

 Đọc câu hỏi xem người sẽ làm việc đó là NAM hay NỮ và nghe giọng của họ o What will the woman do?  Tập trung vào giọng nữ

o What does the woman ask the man to do?  Tập trung vào giọng nữ o What will the man probably do next?  Tập trung vào giọng nam + Conversation 6

d. At the hotel front desk

2/ Why does Mr.Brown not take the room with a view of the lake? a. It is a smoking room

 Các bạn đoán xem dễ không nào! Phòng có view nhìn ra hồ chỉ có thể là hotel thôi! Bạn sắp thành “GIA CÁT DỰ” rồi đấy 

Ex3:

1/ Where is the conversation taking place? a. At a bank
