One of the biggest time sinks – and causes of errors – for email mar-keters is the creation of the email marketing newsletter. For most email marketers, the process works as follows:

It’s a painstaking process. Unfortunately, it’s a process that exists inside many, many companies that execute email marketing cam-paigns. In fact, this is sometimes a person’s entire job – the proper cutting and pasting of links.

What if it didn’t have to be that way? What if your email templates were automatically updated for you? What if you never had to touch the email template again? Would that save you time? Would that increase productivity?

Create the content – OR – get the content links from your con-tent team

Store those links in a spreadsheet until you need them for generating the email

Add tracking links to each link in the newsletter

Paste those content & tracking links into your newsletter tem-plate (be careful not to make any mistakes!)

Upload the images for each piece of content

Edit the HTML template to make sure the image links point to the appropriate place.

Test the rendering of the edited HTML to make sure you didn’t make any mistakes

Attach the content inside of your email system to the appro-priate list.

Schedule the email to be sent – being careful not to send it at the wrong time.

Repeat the entire process the next time you send the newslet-ter (either lanewslet-ter today, tomorrow, or next week.)

Have you ever seen a button on your email that reads “Click Here to see this email as a web page?” Our genius product team at Maropost Marketing Cloud thought – “hey, why don’t we reverse this process and let the WEB do the heavy lifting for us? After all, the web is where we’re driving these clicks, so how about they work together!” So we put our best team on the problem (we promised them cake) and came up with a pretty cool way to bring your content time down to ZERO.

Step 1 – Create a web page that’s formatted like an email – This is the hardest part of the process…but probably the part where you will have the most resources – your web team! Set the page up with a max width of 600px (just like an email) and you’re golden.

Step 2 – Use your content management system to “feed” the page – As new content becomes available, your content management system can automatically update and populate the most recent, most relevant content on the page.

Step 3 – Make sure you include analytics tags – By having your web team develop the pages, they’ll be skilled in making sure the right analytics tags are placed on your page links. Just make sure you name the source something like “newsletter” and/or “email” (so your team gets the credit!) Also make sure that the date changes every day, so you can track the day the newsletter was sent inside of your analytics system.

That’s it! After these three steps, you are 95% of the way to automating your email newsletters.

On the Maropost Marketing Cloud side, here’s what you have to do (We’ve included pictures.) –

Step 1 – Create your email content – rather than uploading or creating HTML, simply select “Pull from URL.” Enter in URL of “email newsletter web page you built (from the prior step) listed above.

Click anywhere else on the page and the system will automatically go out and fetch the content – make sure you give this a name, then save the con-tent.

Step 2 – Create a Campaign– Now that you have your content (which you only have to do once), you create the actual campaign. Fill in all the appropriate header information, then select the content you saved on the prior step. Select the lists or segments you want to send to, as well as including any suppressions of people you DON’T want to send to.

Step 3 – Run a Spam Check – you only have to do this the first time, just to make sure your page is set up properly. Don’t worry, if your spam score goes about 5 we’ll automatically delay the campaign until the issue is fixed.

Multiple sends per day (Morning versus afternoon versus evening) Step 4 – Schedule for the same time, every day (or week) - Select which time you would like the sends to go out.
