The key objective of pilot project at the FT in the Port

of Koper was to design the approach for the

implementation of advanced energy management

system in the complex environment of modern

Mediterranean ports.

The aim of the pilot project was to provide the

necessary background of energy consumption for

cooling and to allow informed decisions to be made

and to significantly reduce the risk of opinionated

decisions.

Energy management system enrich business processes with new

knowledge about energy consumption and always lead to a better

understanding of activities and processes.

The prototype solution of the energy management system for the

FT was designed to acquire, process and visualize energy data and

to provide enough information to enable shop-floor workers and

energy manager to execute preventive or corrective actions in

order to optimize company’s energy or cost performance.

Energy consumption patterns are essential not only for a better

understanding of past behaviours but also for forecasting future

energy demand and particularly for estimating energy

requirements of alternative consumption strategies.

Installed equipment is modular and fully flexible

equipped with a high-performance microcontroller for

the control of switchboards and low and medium voltage

connection points. It is designed to meet the

requirements of diverse applications and in terms of

modularity allows 3-phase real-time monitoring of power

quality and consumption.

Conclusion

Initial tests clearly confirmed that efficient and effective

energy management system at the FT helps decision makers

to become aware of the energy and environmental

performance and closes the gap between theory and

practice.

Implementation approach tested in the Port of Koper has

high replication potential and could be repeated in any other

European port.

Implemented pilot project fully supports requirements of

ISO 50001 especially regarding monitoring relevant variables

related to significant energy use and evaluation of actual
