Objective:

To convey the underlying principles and concepts of academic program planning and development and the Health Education and Nurse Education Satellite Program

Learning Outcome:

Upon completion of this presentation and discussion, the WHA Advisory Board will have a fundamental

understanding of KapCC’s academic program planning and development process and the Health Education

and Nurse Education Satellite Program.

KCC Nurse Education Satellite Program (NESP)

KCC Commitment

– Health Instructor/KCC Site Coordinator (with assistance of KCC Health

Sciences Counselors):

• Serve as the primary contact for all Nursing and Health Sciences course and program information in the Leeward area.

• Assist in planning of the NESP at LCC and WHA

• Teach nursing and other health-related courses

• Review, collect, organize, & forward applications to KCC Kekaulike Student Services Center

• Coordinate course offerings and programs in collaboration with KCC Nursing and Health Sciences Dept. Chairs

• Provide updates and in-service to LCC- Waianae Satellite staff

KCC Nurse Education Satellite Program (NESP)

• Attend the WHA Board Meetings - provide information on the progress of Nursing and Health Education majors; represent Nursing and Health Education Departments

• Provide leadership as co-leader with LCC- Waianae Satellite Academic Coordinator of CC team supporting WHA

• Assist Dept. Chair in

recruitment of appropriate faculty for course

instruction

• Provide updates and in- service to LCC-Waianae Satellite staff as needed

Leeward Community College

Provide “one-stop” student support services to

its Waianae Satellite campus by providing all

aspects of student support starting in Spring

2008, e.g.,

• Registration

• Counseling

• Academic Advising

• Remediation

• In addition LCC-Waianae Satellite program should: – Assist in the recruitment of students in

the Leeward community for courses and programs offered through the WHA

– Develop and offer support activities and groups (e.g., Access to College

Excellence) for prospective and admitted students

– Serve as representative to the Perkins IV project (Health Services Career

Pathway) articulating DOE and KCC health care courses and programs

– Assist the LCC Waianae-Satellite counselor in recruitment visits to

Waianae and Nanakuli High Schools

• LCC-Waianae Satellite program should (cont):

– Support the academic advising duties of the Health

Instructor/KCC Site Coordinator by providing course and general program information, and reviewing applications with the KCC Site Coordinator

– Coordinate prospective student visits to KCC Campus

– Attend and provide Program updates at the Waianae Health Academy Board Meetings

– Participate as a postsecondary

representative in Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA)

activities and assist in the

establishment of a postsecondary HOSA chapter in Leeward Oahu for prospective and admitted students

• Waianae Health Academy should:

– Recruit students in a timely manner according to the

schedules developed by KCC and/or LCC

– Work with KCC Health Instructor/Site Coordinator and LCC staff and counselors to assure each student has participated in developing a pathway comprised of courses necessary to prepare them for access to the nursing and health sciences programs and success in these programs

– Work with KCC and LCC faculty and staff to assist in their acclimation to the Waianae area and its students
