NOTES for BISCUIT A626395
2021-01-18 VOLUNTEER
Walked and met Biscuit for the first time on 1/17 PM. I fed him a few hot dogs through the public side to introduce myself and then leashed him from the outside of the service side. He had loose body language and a wiggly body. We walked to the east side of the park and he showed me his sit and down. Quite focused on me despite many people all throughout the park. Took treats with a very gentle mouth. He exhibited no concerning behaviors toward me nor did he meet anyone during the walk. Uneventful return to kennel. B.

I have walked biscuit the last 2 days each time in tandem with a different Walker only because I wasn't sure how strong he would be. Both days I easily entered his kennel picked up his drag line which I really don't feel he needs anymore and leashed him up and off we went. He walked beautifully had no issues where he got Overstimulated seeing somebody go by at a distance. He does his business right away. We stop at a halfway point and get treats and go through his tricks And he has behaved perfectly.

2021-01-09 BEHAVIOR
I went to greet Biscuit in the parking lot to help with return as he is a people selective dog and knows me from FIT Camp. Upon approach he was barking defensively on leash with his owner. I let him know I was coming with my voice and allowed him to come up to me and sniff me. He had a slightly loose body, and sniffed me, then jumped up and attempted to bite me multiple times (he had a basket muzzle on). I asked the adopter to place him in a kennel due to his behavior and leave the muzzle on.
Later 3036 and I went back to his kennel to remove the muzzle. He allowed 3036 to leash him and take him to a play yard. While 3036 was feeding him treats I removed the muzzle and walked him back to his kennel without any issue. 3014

DO YOU HAVE ANY FUNNY STORIES OR OTHER INFORMATION YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ABOUT YOUR FOSTER?
Biscuit may be hard to get to know but he is so incredibly worth it. He really wants to please his people and be by their side all the time. An incredibly loyal companion who probably saved our mental health through the pandemic. 10/10 emotional support pup. He just needs a calm home that doesn't have guests all the time. He LOVES walks and loves being asked if he is "hungry".
Biscuit opened my Christmas presents early only to discover he got socks again :/
Biscuit fought a skunk in November and each day he still goes and stares at the rock it lives under, waiting for his payback.
Biscuit is extremely food motivated. We taught him shake to get him more comfortable with people touching his feet. He shakes with us and is great but when strangers offer him a treat, he usually sits and immediately gives paw without asking and then shows teeth to remind you he's doing this for you and he doesn't like it.
I came out to the backyard one morning to see Biscuit barking up our mesquite tree. I look up in it expecting to see a bird and it was a baby cougar he was chasing out of our yard...
One day he discovered our cantaloupes in the garden. He carried a small one over to me and knowing he shouldn’t have it, he gave it back. The next night, I come outside and he comes trotting over licking his lips.
Sure enough, I check our garden and our second cantaloupe is gone. You can guess what happened to the third cantaloupe later that week.
2020-12-21 BEHAVIOR
IF A DOG, IS THIS ANIMAL CRATE-TRAINED?
A little. He slept in it the first night or two we had him and he was okay with it as long as you were in the room with him. We never used it more than those first few nights, it felt unnecessary.
IF A DOG, DESCRIBE THEIR LEASH BEHAVIOR:
Pulls. He pulled VERY hard the first month or so we had him. If we ran with him, he sprinted and almost pulled us down. He now still walks in front of us but it's a gentle pull. If he see's bunnies, lizards, triggering people, he will pull very hard. If we go to new or scary places (i.e. PACC) he will usually pull very hard and bark. When we run, he now jogs right next to us.
WHAT WORDS AND QUALITIES BEST DESCRIBE YOUR FOSTER (FRIENDLY, RESERVED, CUDDLY, COUCH POTATO, ETC)?
Cuddly, loyal, and goober. Biscuit is like a burned cream filled donut. Rough around the edges, maybe a little scary, but he has a gushy and soft heart. He is incredibly cuddly and loving in the home. He wants to rest his head on your lap or lay on you while you watch tv or relax. At night, he occasionally enjoys his own bed but mostly wants to cuddle and spoon you. He loves belly rubs, back rubs, and giving kisses. Loves to great you with kisses when you get home.
2020-12-21 BEHAVIOR
DOES S/HE HAVE ANY BEHAVIORAL ISSUES THAT YOU ARE AWARE OF?
Yes. Bit several kids while young in his first home. Bit a volunteer while at PACC. Lunged at multiple people with us but never bit anyone and broke skin. He is very reactive to strangers in his bubble when he's with his people. People getting out of cars, people that are loud, strangers at the house, or people that run towards him (i.e. instead of the other side of the road) usually stress him out. He will bark nonstop and try to lunge at
them. Sometimes he will act calm (nervous but calm) and sniff new people but if they move their hands or bodies he will completely panic and jump on them or lunge at them.
He will get into any food like substance (trash, food on counter, things in bags, etc.) when he knows no one is watching. If that's away, he's fine home alone and not destructive.
He has separation anxiety. The first week he whined and barked if anyone left the home, even if people were still with him. When I first started leaving him he would panic for the first 10 minutes or so then relax. That went on for a few months. Now, I give him something when I go and he is completely fine (bully stick, kong, lick pad, etc). He had trouble with my partner and I leaving at the same time but if one person focuses on the treat for him while the other leaves, then the second person goes, he's fine. He's shown significant progress in this area.
Don't touch his paws. They're irritated because of allergies so that may be why he is so reactive to it but he hates it. He lets me touch them some and he always shows teeth to tell you to back off before doing
anything. But you must build trust with him before he lets you touch them.
IS S/HE FEARFUL OF ANY OBJECTS, SITUATIONS, OR PEOPLE? (IF SO, DESCRIBE)
Strangers (at the home, near his people, within 10-15ft of him and not leaving, near the car, people who look straight into his eyes, crowds, people reaching straight for his face, drive thru's, etc). He is more welcoming when his people aren't around and he has to put his trust into you.
WHAT TOYS, IF ANY, DOES YOUR FOSTER ENJOY PLAYING WITH?
Loves tearing apart stuffed toys that squeak. We have a few chew toys but he doesn't play with them often.
He likes a green ball we have that is super bouncy and you can put tiny treats in it for him to get out. He won't fetch more than a few times. He usually stops to chew on a stuffy or a harder chew toy.
2020-12-21 BEHAVIOR
HOW LONG HAVE YOU FOSTERED THIS ANIMAL?
~9 months
WHAT TYPE OF FOOD DOES THIS ANIMAL PREFER?
He will eat literally anything edible but currently on a grain free/salmon food to see if it helps with allergies.
WOULD YOU SAY THIS ANIMAL IS VOCAL, QUIET OR SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN?
At home, quiet. Anywhere else, vocal.
WAS THIS ANIMAL AROUND KIDS (IF SO, PLEASE DESCRIBE THEIR REACTION):
No. He saw kids go by on scooters or bikes in the neighborhood and he was very reactive, especially if they were loud. I would never have him around kids without a muzzle on.
WAS THIS ANIMAL AROUND CATS (IF SO, PLEASE DESCRIBE THEIR REACTION):
No. Loves chasing bunnies, bobcats, a cougar one time, lizards, etc. I would expect him to do the same with a house cat. At least at first. I don't know if he had other pets in his previous homes.
WAS THIS ANIMAL AROUND DOGS (IF SO, PLEASE DESCRIBE THEIR REACTION):
Yes. He usually matches their energy on walks. He prefers to sniff and move on, doesn't seem to understand how to play. If a dog is reactive while on walks, he usually becomes reactive too. If they ignore him, he usually ignores them. High energy dogs seem to stress him out.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR HOME ENVIRONMENT (CALM, BUSY, CHAOTIC, ETC) Calm
2020-12-11 BEHAVIOR What we know:
• Reason for surrender:
2018: After dog bit two different children in two days, breaking skin on both, owner surrendered dog to PACC for dog's 10 day quarantine period. Owner did not claim dog after quarantine ended.
2020: Dog came in as stray, second owner did not claim at end of stray hold period.
• Behavioral history in previous home:
- No information given. Bite victims stated dog was seen running loose; containment issues.
• Results of behavioral evaluation(s):
- During play group evaluation, dog was vocal and anxious, kept to self but was mostly friendly, preferred lower key dogs. Good helper dog.
• Observations by staff and volunteers:
- Volunteers report he gets excited to get out of his kennel to go for his daily walk.
- Bit volunteer who quickly approached and leaned over to give him a treat - Very affectionate and snuggly with fosters. Wary of new people.
Behavioral Issues:
1) Has bitten two 9 year old children when dog got loose from yard. No young children in home without dog being supervised at all times.
2) Possible fear of strangers or resource guarding of people. Bite risk.
3) Containment issues, secure yard required.

PG-GnD preffered, vocal-anxious, K2S mostly but friendly
Biscuit has been attending FIT Camp for some extra attention while in foster care. While at FIT Camp for the past weeks he has worked on dog socialization, people socialization and muzzle training.
Biscuit has been working on his issues with strangers. He tends to be vocal and bark at strangers when he is on leash with his fosters or known staff. To help with this he has been hanging out in an office with multiple staff coming and going. He will bark at first but if the staff ignore him he eventually warms up and allows pets. He LOVES treats and will take them from strange staff in the office. He also seeks out affection once he gets to know you but does not like his paws touched.
He has been working on muzzle training so he can meet new people safer in the home and wear during vet visits. He willingly puts his nose in the muzzle in order to eat treats.
In playgroup he is one of our helper dogs! He is very calm and gentle and mostly keeps to himself. He was particularly interested in an unsprayed female today in playgroup, and did get a little mounty, but tried to play. Otherwise he helps us evaluate new dogs and is very appropriate with them!
2020-08-13 BEHAVIOR 8/13/20
Assisted with a meet and greet between Biscuit and a potential adopter. He barked and lunged when he first met me with his foster holding the leash. Because of known resource guarding behaviors of his foster
caregiver, Kayla, we had her kennel him in a quiet area of phase 2 where he could decompress for a few minutes and get acquainted with me away from her.
I went to his kennel 4 separate times. The first time, he barked and jumped at the kennel door but stopped once I tossed him a few treats. I walked away after a couple minutes then returned again. He was loose bodied and quiet this time, accepting treats easily. I entered the kennel and gave him treats directly, which he accepted easily again. I left and returned a third time. Greeted easily and allowed gentle pets but raised his lip after a few moments of it. I returned for the 4th time to leash him and take him to a quiet play yard behind PACC with the potential adopter. He allowed this easily and once we were in the play yard, he asked for affection from me by nuzzling my hands and pressing his body against my legs.
He took treats from the potential adopter easily but maintained distance from him when treats were not being offered. I advised him not to reach for Biscuit unless Biscuit sought it from him directly. Returned to his kennel with no issues and did not react to me and Kayla walking side by side on the way out to the parking lot.

6/29/20 Sol Dog Consultation (cont'd):
The fosters have reported no issues with Biscuit trying to escape. No noticeable indicators that he is
struggling with containment. The fosters have made progress with Biscuit in terms of his separation anxiety.
He will still struggle if both humans leave at the same time, but as of now if they leave individually he is able to not be triggered into an anxious state. Fosters have also been able to introduce guests to Biscuit through slow, no pressure intros, instructing guests to ignore Biscuit entirely until he warms up to them.
I believe working Biscuit in a home environment as long as it's safe for everyone immediately involved will likely have the most impact to help generalize better behaviors to an adoptive home, than we would have in a board and train. However I believe it would be useful to have him spend some time at the facility in order for me to better assess him, and build some level of report to be in a position to step in and handle him should the need arise in future private lessons. At this time the foster is able to handle Biscuit more safely at this point than anyone else.
Goals:
Get Biscuit to be calm and under control in the presence of strangers.
Suggested:
1 week Board and Train and 6 Private lessons
2020-07-02 BEHAVIOR 6/29/20 Sol Dog Consultation:
Biscuit came in for a consultation today to address issues with guarding and human aggression. From talking with the fosters it sounds like Biscuit struggles with anxiety and is insecure in situations relating to people.
While in the foster home Biscuit hasn't bitten any guests, but he did charge, bark, jump and nip at a delivery driver who surprised them at their home.
During the consult I ignored Biscuit until he finally settled and laid down for a while. Initially Biscuit wandered around the room sniffing, exploring, and anxiously panting. He occasionally would come up and sniff me.
Once he settled and I acknowledged him he did bark and lunge in my direction. The fosters were quick to jump into action trying to quiet and console Biscuit. I talked to them about the importance of not responding so intensely to his reactions to people. When they backed off from being super on guard, and Biscuit barked and lunged I dropped a handful of treats. Biscuit seemed to be able to recover from the reactive head space and toggle into being calmer again. Biscuit disengaged from reacting to me and sought out the food on the floor. When Biscuit reengaged with me it was to demand bark for more food, so I ignored him until he was quiet. I then asked him to sit and I gestured raising the treat in my hand. When I would initially raise my hand and engage with him I could see Biscuit stiffen with anticipation and a building intensity like he was about to blow up again, so I would lower my hand and re raise it with a sing songy tone to my voice cuing "sit". He offered a sit and I tossed him food. We repeated that process several times. Each time I would initially
"reset" my hand in response to stiff body language from Biscuit. After each time I would relieve that
pressure, and then reapply it and he was responsive. After several repetitions of this I raised my hand again and saw him stiffen, but held my hand there and Biscuit complied. From what I saw in this interaction there wasn't any focus on the humans in the situation that triggered unwanted behavior. Me putting pressure on Biscuit by directing my attention at him was the thing he was struggling with in the context of our specific interaction.

Jan and Lynne worked with Biscuit and foster mom. He did a lot of pacing back and forth instead of walking the perimeter like most dogs. Foster was concerned with reactions to strangers and even her brother who has lived in the home for 3 weeks. Jan crossed the play yard to pour water into a bowl for him and put herself between him and owner and Biscuit went towards Jan to get between owner and Jan. Confident barking, and teeth showing until Jan backed away. He also reacted to people in masks walking by and dogs and anyone within 4 feet of the fence. Lynne had been throwing treats on the ground to help Biscuit get more
comfortable with us. After a few times, Biscuit moved towards Lynne and began demand barking. All behavior was forward and confident. Asked foster to move away and call Biscuit, which she did and he did follow. With more space Biscuit did stop barking. Over the length of the session the triggers were stacking for Biscuit, so finally we had to ask the foster to leash him. Biscuit's behavior today indicates he was resource guarding his foster. We reviewed the techniques she needs to implement right away in the home to keep her brother safe. From her description, it sounds like Biscuit is fine with her partner and father who have been in the home since he arrived. Reviewed fair trade for toys/food. He also has exhibited some separation
anxiety/isolation distress when she leaves and we reviewed the steps she can take to remediate. We also advised her to contact the foster coordinator to let her know about Biscuit's guarding issues are and can FOP assist with some board and train. We gave her the booklets Feisty Fido and I'll Be Home Soon, as well as articles on resource guarding, fair trade and stranger danger.

Who doesn't like Biscuits? And our Biscuit is, ahem... a little fluffy himself, like a perfect buttermilk biscuit.
He could stand to lose a few lbs, since he has his eye on a brand new speedo. He'd like to go to a home where he can get a daily stroll and get working on his fitness. Biscuit is friendly and gets so excited to get out on his daily walk- he does a funny little bucking bronco dance to show how happy he is! In PACC play group Biscuit has been friendly with the other dogs, but has mostly kept to himself and is most comfortable with more mellow dogs. Come get your Biscuit fix at PACC!
