Momentous Gift to Support Expansive MRI Project
This spring, South Shore Health received a momentous $5 million gift from local residents Digger and Susan Donahue.
The Donahues’ generosity will support an expansion of our diagnostic imaging capabilities in the hospital and throughout the health system. You can read more about the proposed project on page 6. These key improvements are central to our commitment to provide excellent care locally.
Philanthropy has always been a catalyst for great progress in all areas of South Shore Health, and as we prepare to celebrate our 100th anniversary in 2022, philanthropy will continue to be instrumental as we chart our own path forward as an independent health system.
“We have been inspired by the health system’s strong new leadership and resolute commitment to sustain a local, high-quality healthcare organization, which is vital to our community. We have experienced excellent care and are privileged to join others in investing in this vision.”
In recognition of the Donahues’ incredible investment in the future of patient care in our community, we will be naming our Emergency Department in their honor.
Letter From the Chair of the Board, South Shore Health Foundation
On March 31, South Shore Health made an important announcement: After carefully considering partnership opportunities with other healthcare organizations, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to preserve the health system’s independence. In 2022, the organization will celebrate its 100th birthday in faithful service to our mission and with full understanding of our value not only as a provider of indispensable patient care but as a partner in building a more resilient South Shore.
We are grateful to our ardent supporters — all of you — who have helped us fulfill our pivotal role in the community over many years and who continue to help us uphold our promise to the residents of the region. Here, let me also offer a heartfelt
“thank you” to Digger and Susan Donahue, longtime friends of the Foundation and the health system, who have recently pledged an extraordinary gift to Mission Critical: The Campaign for Our 2 nd Century. Their investment in the future of innovative patient care, during a time of exciting progress for South Shore Health, is an inspiration.
Mission Critical will culminate next year with a long list of notable achievements in patient- and community-care. The timeline on the opposing page highlights some of the projects this campaign has funded over the last several years. Of course, this is an abbreviation of all the toil that went into, and progress that resulted from, this enormous effort that so many of you supported.
Yet, as we revel in the campaign’s successes, let’s not be distracted from the work that still lies ahead. After a harrowing year, our community needs help recovering. Your generous
contributions during these last months of the campaign will serve many of those recovery needs including mental well-being services for our patients and frontline colleagues as well as vital capital improvements that will drastically enhance patient care and satisfaction.
At the Foundation, events season is well underway and we are grateful for the opportunity to get outdoors and host a series of safe, meaningful events with our valued supporters in attendance! Just weeks ago, our Events team hosted Golf Classic and Walk for Hospice, both rousing successes that raised pivotal funds for South Shore Health programs. And coming up in July, we will host a belated Luminaria celebration benefiting South Shore Health’s Home Care Division and honoring local residents and community healthcare advocates, Chris Oddleifson and Rosemary & Jim Phalen. Luminaria has been postponed multiple times since spring 2020 and we couldn’t be more excited to finally give this event, and all the people it recognizes, the night it deserves! Turn to pages 3 and 4 for more important events news and happenings.
I hope these first days of summer find you well. Whatever it is you enjoy about the season, we hope it is yours in abundance!
Gratefully,
Carol Bulman
Chair of the Board, South Shore Health Foundation
Susan and Digger Donahue.
Evergreen Society Memorial Ceremony
On Saturday, May 15, a remembrance ceremony for Evergreen Society honorees took place on the Old South Union Church lawn in Weymouth.
The Evergreen Society offers a way to pay lasting tribute to a dearly departed loved one while supporting the charitable mission of South Shore Health. Initiating a memorial fund through the Evergreen Society is an opportunity to honor those we’ve loved and lost by helping others undergoing treatment within the health system. In addition to recognition at this special annual ceremony, the names of new tributes are added to a wall display inside South Shore Hospital.

The 2021 Moonlight & Miracles Gala will take place on Friday, October 15, at Union Point in Weymouth. The Gala will once again support local behavioral health and substance use disorder (SUD) services organized under Grayken Center for Treatment. In addition to the pandemic’s devastating effect on physical health and tragic loss of life, it also continues to have a dramatic effect on the mental well-being of so many throughout the region and across the world. Your support is tremendously valuable as we continue to strengthen our programs and expand services to meet overwhelming demand.

Two Grayken Center for Treatment Programs Move to 797 Main Street in Weymouth
The demand for behavioral health and substance use disorder services is ever- increasing. As a result, the Grayken Center for Treatment’s Bridge and Perinatal Behavioral Health Programs have outgrown their existing space within South Shore Hospital.
A spacious, new office space located across the street from the hospital offers:
• Twelve offices for staff and patient intake/consult
• Four exam rooms
• Two multipurpose conference rooms
• Reception area
• On-site parking, especially beneficial for pregnant women and mothers with strollers and young children
These programs launched in the fall of 2019 with a goal to assist thousands of South Shore residents on their paths to long term recovery through the integration of physical and behavioral health services.
SHORE Program Benefits From State Grant
The Massachusetts Health Policy Commission recently approved $1.4 million in awards to five applicants for the Cost-Effective, Coordinated Care for Caregivers and Substance Exposed Newborns (C4SEN) Investment Program.
The SHORE Program, part of South Shore Health’s Perinatal Behavioral Health Program, was one of the beneficiaries.
SHORE, an acronym for Supporting Hope, Opportunity, Resilience and Empowerment, cares for pregnant and postpartum women who are managing substance use disorder (SUD).
Grant funds will be used to support the growth of an innovative, stigma-free care model that addresses health equity and promotes collaboration among primary care and specialty providers, behavioral health providers, community-based organizations, and social service agencies.
“Since launching our Perinatal Behavioral Health Program in late 2018, we’ve helped hundreds of South Shore mothers manage their behavioral health needs while keeping their baby’s health front of mind,” said program director, Julie Paul, DNP, CNM, PMHNP-BC. “Our goal is to help moms make the best choices for themselves and their babies by providing the most up-to-date information about taking medication during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding. We’re building a program that gives women on the South Shore a community that is nurturing, free from judgment, and has the resources in place to support mothers during pregnancy and beyond.”
The SHORE Program is part of Grayken Center for Treatment’s collection of behavioral health and SUD programs.
In May, a pinwheel garden was planted outside South Shore Hospital in support of Mental Health Awareness month. Each pinwheel represents a donation to South Shore Health’s behavioral health and SUD programs.
Perinatal Behavioral Health Program Director Julie Paul.
South Shore Health’s Office of Research
Though not an academic hospital, South Shore Health employs an Office of Research that has been active in valuable clinical trials and observational research for decades. Recently, the department has participated in several COVID-19 studies, including a clinical trial on baricitinib sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company; an ongoing clinical trial on remdesivir as a treatment in an outpatient setting sponsored by Gilead Sciences, Inc.; and an analysis on the impact of ICU isolation on family members of COVID-19 patients.
With vaccine distribution widening and infection rates declining, the office is set to resume a number of non-COVID trials that were paused due to the pandemic, and begin work on several new projects.
If you are interested in learning about and supporting research efforts
happening at the health system, contact Jessica Symonds at 781-624-8847 or JSymonds@southshorehealth.org.
More information about the Office of Research, including the specific studies listed above, can be found at SouthShoreHealth.org/Clinical- Research.
MRI Project Secures New Funding
South Shore Health has begun the process for a new diagnostic imaging project.
The project will be partially funded by a generous gift from Digger and Susan Donahue. Plans to replace the existing 1.5T MRI machine and add a new 3T MRI machine at the Hospital as well as update existing machines in the Cancer Center and the Center for Orthopedics, Spine and Sports Medicine will expand services and dramatically enhance and expedite patient care throughout the health system.
A 3T MRI, or 3 Tesla MRI is the fastest MRI technology available, offering results 50% faster than standard MRI exams, with more complete image quality.
Medical imaging serves patients from birth through end-of-life and allows physicians to diagnose a wide range of chronic conditions, evaluate acute/
traumatic injuries, and find diseases in early stages. South Shore Hospital’s MRI machine is in use 24/7, 365 days per year.
The project, which is pending DPH approval, includes construction to
accommodate the new equipment and technology, and has an estimated timeline of 29 months.

Answering the Call
The philanthropic support of our business community through the Presidents’
Circle program has helped South Shore Health fulfill its mission, in good times and bad, for the past 25 years. This passionate group of corporate leaders has come together for our community to strengthen well-being, build resilience, and impact generations of families across the region for years to come.
As a not-for-profit, charitable health system, philanthropy is essential to the important work of providing all residents on the South Shore with access to comprehensive health care and well-being resources. Philanthropy is also integral to advancing technology, improving facilities, and expanding programs that will continue to enhance patient care and meet the diverse needs of our community as we all learn to thrive in a post-pandemic world.
Each company represented on this display has donated at least $25,000 to the Health System; many have donated much more. Through these generous contributions, South Shore Health will continue to uphold our vision to be the first place our residents turn to for health and wellness. We will preserve truly local care that is sought not only for its convenience but for its excellence.
Presidents’ Circle members have my sincere gratitude for their support. All who depend on South Shore Health for primary care, emergency care, and specialty care benefit from their advocacy.
If you would like to join the Presidents’ Circle or donate, please contact the South Shore Health Foundation at 781-624-8600.
