BIOGRAPHIES
ANTHONY ARNONE. Described as "A cellist with rich tonal resources, fine subtlety and a keen sense of phrasing" (Gramophone magazine), cellist Anthony Arnone enjoys a varied and interesting career as an active soloist, chamber musi- cian, conductor, recording artist, and teacher throughout the country and around the world. Mr. Arnone is currently the associate professor of cello at The University of Iowa School of Music and is also on the faculty of the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City, where he teaches and conduces.
Mr. Arnone has collaborated with many of today's great chamber ensembles and artists, including members of the Pro Arte Quartet, Cypress Quartet, Fry Street Quartet, and Arianna Quartet. Performances have taken him around the United Scates and Europe to many leading concert venues as a soloist, chamber musician, and ,- conductor. Mr. Arnone's recordings with Albany and VAI have received acclaimed
reviews in prominent music journals and online classical websites.
An avid performer of the Bach Suites, Mr. Arnone wrote and self-published his own edition of the Six Cello Suites with a composed Second Cello "Continuo" part to aid in teaching and performance. Mr. Arnone's love of teaching has taken him throughout the country to perform masterclasses at Oberlin College and the Cleveland Institute of Music. In addition to giving masterclasses, Mr. Arnone brings celebrated teachers and performers to The University of Iowa for a yearly "Cello Daze" weekend of lectures, concerts, and masterclasses. Past guests include Richard Aaron, Colin Carr, Hans Jensen, Bonnie Hampton, Joel Krosnick, Norman Fischer, Marc Johnson, Anthony Ross, and Robert DeMaine, and many ochers.
As a cello soloist and chamber musician, Mr. Arnone was a founding member of the Meridien Trio and che Sedgewick Sering Quartet, which performed regularly at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C. More recently, he has been part of the Matisse Trio, a faculty trio at The University oflowa, which has played throughout the United Scates and at international conferences.
MARTHA ECKEY, piano. Two-time Iowa Center for the Arts award winner Martha Eckey holds a Bachelor of Music from The University oflowa in piano performance and an Master of Music from the Eastman School of Music. She has performed as a soloisE and chamber musician in the United States, Canada, and Europe, including performances in Salzburg, Austria and the Chautauqua Concert Series in Chautauqua, New York. In addition to performing, Ms.
Eckey also teaches piano and music theory; most notably, she has taught at the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City and the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, and has led master classes and piano workshops in upstate New York. Her research interests involve musical "time travel" - nonlinear and multi-directed temporal processes in late Beethoven piano works. Recently, Ms. Eckey made the decision to indulge her scientific and analytical interests by striking out in a new direction. Now a second year student at The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, she _) hopes a remarkable synergy between music and pharmacy will result.
This program is supported in part by The Elizabeth M. Stanley Performing Arts Endowment.
