 The 1st application window (1Nov-15 Dec.) is highly recommended for all students

 Decision regarding admission: By the end of March 2022

 The 2nd application window (in March 2022) is only for students who do not need a visa and students who already have a Swiss residence permit. Applications during the 2nd application window from candidates who need a visa cannot be considered.

 Decision regarding admission: by end of June 2022

• Please submit your complete application, including all required documents, by the given deadline.

• Late or incomplete applications cannot be processed. Entry in the Spring Semester is unfortunately not possible.

biomedical and industrial applications and promoting the development of new processes and products in the biotech, pharmaceutical and chemical industries

The mission of the Department of

Biosystems Science and Engineering (D- BSSE) is the understanding, rational design and programming of complex biological systems from the nanoscale up to whole organisms.

• Admission is strictly “sur dossier”

• Eligible: Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biology, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Biomedicine and other disciplines with a strong theoretical-​mathematical background

• A minimum background in biology, computer science and mathematics is mandatory for all students.

The admission committee may issue additional requirements

 The additional requirements courses need to be taken in addition to the regular master's degree programme (overall study duration might be extended)

 Most common additional requirement courses:

− Data Structures and Algorithms

− Computer Science

− Cell and Molecular Biology for Engineers

− Stochastics (Probability and Statistics)

MSc Computational Biology and Bioinformatics - Research Background

In-depth understanding and command of methods, theories, and algorithms required for the computational analysis of complex biological data and systems

Familiarity with key concepts of modern research in biology, including applications to medicine and biotechnology

Focuses on the development of concepts and methods rather than merely on applications of bioinformatics

In-depth knowledge in the areas of bioinformatics, biophysics, systems biology, and data science

Interdisciplinary communication and collaboration with specialists in biology, computer science, mathematics, and other disciplines

Includes practical experience in biology, computer science methods, and their combination

Places particular emphasis on the systematic integration of experimental biology / data generation.

Joint Master Degree Programme: ETH Zürich, University of Basel, University of Zürich

Location: Zürich and Basel. Lectures can be taken in Zürich and

Basel, with University of Basel offering lectures in Basel, University of Zurich offering lectures in Zurich and ETH Zürich offering lectures at the Basel campus as well as the Zurich campus. Nearly all credits can be covered in either of the two cities alone.

Four core areas: Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Biosystems and Big Data

• Employment and entrepreneurship in pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry, including major global players headquartered in Basel and strong Swiss startup sector in the biotechnology field

• Broad variety of other sectors ranging from software engineering, bioinformatics, data analysis from pharma via IT to consulting

• About 60% of the graduates continue to obtain a PhD inside and outside of the department
