The Geneline January 2018

From the President Dawn Bostwick

Happy New Year to all! It’s 2018 and we are off to a great start! On Monday, January 8th at 6:00 pm we will cele- brate the Grand Opening of our Technology Lab. The Tech Lab is now fully equipped and functional. We have 14 computers for residents to use, with all new software, including: MS Office 2016, Lightroom 6, and Gymp. We now have a Scannx Book ScanCenter. This nifty piece of equipment can scan docs to: a fax, to google docs, to a smart phone, to QR or to a USB and it can print.

Finally, do not miss our new 60” TV screen. The screen can be used by teachers to instruct a class. Yes, you can reserve the Tech Lab for teaching a class! Please see a library staff member to make your reservation. And look for more staff led classes as well.

Next to the Tech Lab is our Young Adult Room. The YA room is now equipped with a switching table. This unique table comes with connections for 6 laptops, or 6 iPads, and a big screen TV. Whatever is on your laptop, or tab- let screen, will be projected onto the TV. This table is de- signed for group instruction and/or interaction. Library staff also plan to use the table for small group instruction.

Any group, with an adult leader, can reserve the table for instruction.

Remember to check back with us: movies, new online magazines, advanced ebook classes and more!

Please join us for our next AIGS Monthly Meeting Tuesday, January 15, 2018, at 7:00 PM

Community Meeting Room, Fernandina Beach Library 25 North 4th St, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034

Speaker:

J. R. Sharp

Feeding the Enemy” is based on the true story of an Italian family’s determination to survive in the face of evil during World War II. It is a story of perseverance, ingenuity and love. This book captures the spirit of sur- vivability against all odds and provides the reader with an appreciation of what Europeans went through dur- ing the war to end all wars.

The meeting is open to the public, and reservations are not required. Check out the website for more details on this presentation and upcoming events. Just click on

Bosque Bello Cemetery Tour

On a beautiful Saturday in October, AIGS guides took visitors on a tour of yes- teryear, meeting citizens of a bygone time who were instrumental in the life and prosperity of Fernandina. Over 275 people were led on a route through the old section of Bosque Bello where they were entertained and enlightened by the Bosque Bello Players, who portrayed various individuals in Fernandina history. Knowledgeable guides made their trek through the beautiful cano- pied walkways a delight for our guests. Many thanks to the following people, who without their participation, the 25th Anniversary Bosque Bello Cemetery Tour would not have been possible.

Dedication of Memorial Kiosk at Bosque Bello

During the Cemetery Tour held on October 21, 2017, President Dawn Bostwick gave the dedication of the informational kiosk in memory of Hal Belcher, a long-time supporter of the Bosque Bello Cemetery and the first to survey the gravestones. Hal’s two sons and daughter-in-law were present for the dedication, along with members of the Amelia Island Genealogical Society. Marie Santry also told how Hal had gotten her interested in preserving the memories of those buried in this beautiful cemetery and had mentored her in this endeavor.

Our sister organization, the Amelia Island Genealogi- cal Society (AIGS), is nearing completion of a multi- year project to document, map and photograph all gravesites in Bosque Bello Cemetery. The purpose of this ambitious project is to identify, validate and sup- plement gravesite information, then create a searcha- ble on-line database of the information including pho- tographs of grave markers. According to Project Man- agers Bebe Granger and Gus Reinwald, the effort be- gan in January 2013, and is now about 7580% com- plete.

Bosque Bello (Beautiful Woods) Cemetery is believed to have existed as a burial ground as early as 1785, and it offers researchers a wealth of historic infor- mation about past Amelia Island residents... but only if that information is captured, organized, and made available to the public. And that is just what this pro- ject does. According to Granger and Reinwald much of the groundwork was done by late Hal Belcher, history buff and fellow member of our DI-CHS, and has been continued by the AIGS team.

You can take advantage of the hundreds of hours of effort put forth by these hard-working volunteers.

Here's how. Log on to www.aiasoc.orq then select

your area of search from among the numerous op- tions. For example, if you select "Cemeteries" you will get a list of 70 cemeteries in and near Nassau County Florida (yes, 70 cemeteries!). You can also search by a specific surname. I entered my maternal Grandpar- ents' name of Stewart with keyword "cemetery", and received a list of 44 documented burials of Stewarts in Nassau County cemeteries, many with details includ- ing grid locations, dates, and photos of associated monuments/markers. Overall, the AIGS database in- cludes over 47,000 individual records of Amelia Island residents.

Additionally, the Society has created and installed an on-site guide to both the old and new sections of Bosque Bello Cemetery. That display (with a "QR Code") is at the corner of Magnolia and Bosque Bello Streets in the cemetery. By coupling your on-line search results with the map's grid locations, you can find individual Bosque Bello grave sites very quickly.

The following article appeared in the December 2017 issue of “The Clincher”, the quarterly newsletter of the Duncan Lamont Clinch Historical Society.

CHANGES TO FIND-A-GRAVE WEBSITE

Ted Bainbridge, Ph.D.,

past president of the Longmont Genealogical Society Findagrave.com has announced that the web site soon will change. Some changes are cosmetic, while others are functional. A map feature has been added.

The home page, formerly just a list of over thirty choices, will become a photograph with a few menu selections across the top. That page will be dominated by the search panel, which will function largely as it has in the past and with the same options for every search box except those related to location.

The current search panel specifies location via pull-down lists for country, state, and county. The new search panel offers a single box for location, in which you are supposed to type the name of a place. As you begin to type a city, county, state, or country that box auto-fills with suggest- ed place names which you can select with a mouse click.

Use the American English equivalent of a country name;

Germany works but Deutschland doesn’t.

The new home page’s menu bar goes across the top of the screen. Clicking CEMETERIES takes you to a page that lets you hunt cemeteries in either of two ways. Near the top left of the page is a search box where you can type a cemetery name. This auto-fill box works as above. When you select a name, you see a hit list of cemeteries with that name. Each entry on the hit list displays some facts about that cemetery, and a link to its information page.

That page contains a search box that you can use to hunt for a person’s name.

Instead of using that cemetery-name search box, you can use the cemetery-place search box to its right.

Clicking a place name produces a map of cemeteries near that place. You can zoom the map in or out, and can pan it in any direction. (If the map doesn’t display any marker pins, zoom in.) After a name is in that search box, clicking Search leads to a hit list of cemeter- ies near that place. Use this hit list the same way you use the other cemetery search box.

To see and experiment with all the planned changes, go to https://findagrave.com/ and then click preview now near the top center of the screen.

The Amelia Island Genealogical Society needs volunteers for various projects

throughout the year. Volunteering in AIGS would be a great New Year’s resolu-

tion. We need you!!
